Annette, those plug plants look so healthy. Hope they do well for you. I've been busy planting daffodil bulbs. Can't believe it's that time of the year again.

I needed this video tonight. It's been so tough in the garden for the past couple of months. I definitely didn't think about late summer and autumn colour when I started planting. But with the oncoming darker nights my mood is dropping low and you gave me a bit of upbeat hope that things will get better. I'm going to have a look at your supplier, see what they have I might like. I've had a number of things just die on me though, so it's making me nervous. Last summer my pink baby's breath was all over the place, so much that I gave one to a friend when I cut them down. This year nothing came back! I've lost a white cornflower (flowered then just rotted at the base), a pink anemone has done very badly, don't think that's going to come back to life next year. My gorgeous dark red echinacea was doing so well last summer. Vanished over winter. It's soul destroying when that happens. I need to pick myself up by the bootstraps and get on with it! It's great to see you back. You were missed.

If the white cornflower rotted because the soil stayed too wet, build the soil layer up higher so the next lot of plants don't sit and rot in a wet soil, they will be able to drain. Also space the plants apart so there is a good air space around them. Good luck!

Hi Annette 👋 from across the pond. I have had the worst garden 6 weeks. First we had high heat of over 90 everyday and drought with no rain for 5 weeks during heat. No planting or moving things because we were so busy watering all the beds. Then we had hurricane rain and wind that caused so much debris from our older trees with one splitting. Too late to move things but I still have 3 phlox to plant and I am going to cover with mulch heavily. I watched an episode with Rosie Hardy about planting in clay and she mentioned astrantia. I cant find it here!!!!! It obviously grows well, if you are pulling it out because of spread. There's always next year ...😂

I have 3 Festuca in my garden. They are doing well now I have found the right home for them. I have discovered they like to be in really well drained soil as they rot off in soil that is too wet for them. I have have them planted in a raised bed , filled with sandy soil, adjacent to me seaside garden area. I had 6 varieties of Monarda in huge clups in my garden, which looked stunning in Summer 23. Sadly I have lost all but one clump. They came up well in the wet Spring but sadly, because of a 3 week dry spell Most clumps died, including my beloved 'Beauty of Cobham' The Cambridge Scarlet has stayed well as it is planted in a moister area of the garden. I m really busy at the moment potting on seedlings for the veg garden and biennials, and it will soon be dahlia lifting time. I have hundreds of Foxgloves- seeds are so tiny that I always over sow, ha ha. Well, I don't think I will be growing Lysianthus again. The plants only reached 12" and not one flower from a dozen plants 😞 happy gardening 🙂

This year I'm experimenting to overwinter some dahlia tubers (the one I don't like as much) in a slightly raised bed. Is that something for you to try?
@cottoverdi
@cottoverdi 4 күн бұрын
Hi there, I tried to over winter them the first year and only 1 came back and it was extremely weak so I've never done it again. We have such heavy clay soil and so much rain over the winter that they just rot!
