Why You Should Be Growing Heat-Tolerant Superfood Katuk Right Outside Your Door:
Scientific Name - Sauropus androgynus
Katuk is a heat-tolerant survival plant that thrives with no irrigation & no need for fertilizers or amendments of any kind. It is a perennial vegetable, meaning that in warm climates - it will continue to produce year after year without the need for replanting. Katuk is most definitely considered a top permaculture plant for this reason, plus being so nutritious (high in protein, important minerals & obviously lots of cholorophyll/phytonutrients). It provides sustenance to many dishes around the world in tropical/subtropical climates.
Did we mention the nutty flavor is similar to peas or peanuts?

Time, my good friend. Maybe for Pete as well. We all have a shortage of it these days. Contrast the great info you get from Pete in just a short period of time (he does put out longer, more thorough video's)...vs. the on & on & on video's Jon Kohler produces (nothing against him at all--but sometimes you just want him to get to the point & the facts !)

From my experience I can tell you that this plant likes shade better than direct sun. I confirm it because by accident I moved my pot to a place where the sun hits it a little in the morning and now with more time in the shade the plant develops faster. It already has flower and fruits. I don't know if anyone else has noticed this

moonmoon I think that is The problem. I put down two layers of cardboard and 6 inches of mulch then I use a long pointed metal stake to poke a whole threw the cardboard and into ground then I plant my rooted cuttings into that. So we are most likely looking at either too much or too little water or too much or too little sun. Having ruled out water and me living in Texas I'm looking at too much 🌞. So this spring I'll plant three times as much lol...
@LilyyyoftheRose
@LilyyyoftheRose 4 жыл бұрын
inthestyx i wonder if they would do well in shade, and then how much shade. I’ll be transplanting my poor little wilted one to another bed, if it withstands the move then it’ll be a kicker resilient seed producer! i still got hope haha! I’d maybe try interplanting them with a guild, research what they’d grow well with, something to give them a little shade perhaps.

Pete, you said that your flowers turn into little balls. I have seen pictures of plants with WHITE Balls on the flower stems. Mine only ever go to a green/yellow/red flat looking flower. It never seems to make anything else. Mine are all clones of each other, so I wouldn't expect one to be different from another. However, is it possible I have maybe a Male only variety? I would really like to get some that form the small white ball shaped fruit that I have seen in a very few pictures. That’s weird. I’ve only seen them die back and go dormant in really cold winters. They always recover great the following spring.

You need to educate your viewers to not consume raw katuk! A while back ago some Taiwanese die from drinking smoothie made with Katuk every day, the toxic built up and it become fatal. Do a Google search and you can find the report.

Hello! Did you actually watch the whole video? I’m very familiar with what your talking about and discussed it in the video. It has nothing to do with RAW but the amount consumed on a daily basis.

@@PeteKanarisGreenDreamsFL Yes I watched the whole video and you mentioned about not consume more than 20% of the diet, but you didn't mention about the fact that it could be deadly. Viewer may think over consume may just make people sick like diarrhea which in reality it is more serious than that. If there is one thing I have notice, health nuts over consume super food and the mind set of the raw the better (raw food diet, vegan etc) and people these days do not do extensive research before getting on new diet, etc. People may think Katuk is just the next kale, and add a bunch in their salad and smoothie.

Hey Mark! No, I wish we could choose advertisers. That’s a weird one for a gardening channel.
