Galangal can go dormant some winters. I'm in USDA zone 10a and had mine go dormant one year. But not the year before that. It's must depend on certain variables.

The "Jewels of opar" you given is not the true Jewels of opar. You got Suriname purslane aka T. fruiticosum(might be spelled wrongly). Jewels of opar is T. paniculum(sp?) and has a rounder leaf, smaller flowers, and small red seed pods. They are close relatives though both from the genus Talinum.
