😂😂Absolutely! We had big, fenced yards with our Airedales, and they were seldom out of the yard. If they got out because someone left a gate open, their noses immediately went to the ground, and off they would go. They are wonderful dogs for the whole family. The Vet told me to never underestimate the protection that is built into them also.

I'm on my 8th one. You have to want a dog that's busy and stubborn and is into everything. Most people want a dog they can train and remain calm and that's where the mistakes are made and a lot of them end up being thrown, abused, neglected and turned into rescues or dog pounds. My Airedale is up at all hours of the night, if you open an eye and he knows it, he's ready to go. You have to have time and have a personality like them. Not a rigid personality but one where you're willing, to laugh, and devout time to exercise them and keep them busy.

We’ve had numerous Airedale’s in my family. All just absolutely incredible dogs. Even had a few of the big Oorang Airedale’s. 100 lb monsters who were great with all family members (cats too). They were outstanding guard dogs who knew when someone was “sketchy”, even if we didn’t. They could be goofy and silly while playing one moment and absolutely ferocious the next if something bad was going down. They’re big and smart so if you get one as a puppy do the training so they know who’s boss. I couldn’t recommend a better dog. Also, if getting one, go to a good breeder who brings in new dogs to keep the stock strong and free of defects caused by inbreeding.

I have a 3 months old puppy Airedale , he learned to sit in 1 day, he learnt the calling the day after and he learned doing his needs outside home in one week, he can already understand the things I don’t like by looking at my eyes and he likes to play with kids. I have to say that this dog is not for people who want an ordinary dog to watch tv and have hugs, this is a dog with personality and a sweet heart and it’s all about the way you stimulate his brain and give him challenges. I had dogs from other races before but the Airedale are way smarter and nice to spend time with, they are not agressive but I recommend not to excite them a lot or let them play with dogs that are not trained/educated because this dog can turn from a nice dog to a real lion.

The only thing I'd take issue with is, that unless you're going to put them in a some kind of show, their coat is really low maintenance. No need for the hand stripping otherwise. Just get them trimmed for the summer and let them get wooly in the winter. In my experience, Airedales are one of the cleanest big dogs I've ever been around- No shedding, very little drool. Everything else is pretty dead on (though I'd call most of those positives 😀)

I grew up with two different terriers, they’re wonderful dogs and I would recommend them for anyone that wants a dog that won’t be just a teddy bear that walks. But what you said is true, they would cry if we left for more than a couple of hours, chance every cat they saw (one of them jumped out a moving car once) and would require constant attention, they’re very respectful about it tho. One thing you forgot is how stubborn they are, if they want to go somewhere during your walks they would insist on it, most dogs require just one tug and they oblige but airedales will make a tug of war and even after losing will try to tug you back to where they wanted. Anyways these issues are not that big and I would more than recommend them, they’re my favorite dog breeds Edit: I forgot the biggest problem, they are pretty aggressive to other dogs so if you’re planning to have other dogs socializing early is necessary. That also means they won’t have many dog friends in the neighborhood, after our last Airedale we got a Giant Schnauzer and they love other dogs so it was weird getting used to a dog that all the other dogs love from a dog with no friends (besides our Shih Tzu) they never hurt humans without wing provoked tho

Terrier intelligence is not the same as blind obedience they figure out stuff on their own
@jeffslade1892 Жыл бұрын
Intelligence? If you keep an Airedale with a Collie (been there) which are known for being very smart dogs, you quickly realise the Airedale makes them look like dummies. This does mean an Airedale will solve problems on his own, maybe not what you want such as opening closed and latched doors. This means they will learn tricks fast, get bored and less than obedient, even though they know all the commands and hand signals. They work on trust, you do have to be the boss but you cannot boss them about, they don't have a "no" button. If an Airedale says there is something wrong, trust the dog, there is something wrong. When out with an Airedale do not train him to constantly look at you, he knows exactly where you are and what you are doing, he should be alert and surveying his domain and he can "see" with his ears and nose. Like a boisterous 3yo child the size of a 10yo and capable of lifting a grown man on his nose, which can be disconcerting, the Airedale probably thinks it is funny. And they love cuddles, which is a bit like wrestling with a leopard.

The glowing comments about the Airedale breed astound me! Neither mine nor any that I've met, regardless of amount of time spent over years, would earn the praise I've read in other comments! ! Not loyal like herding dogs are but like a business partner who seeks what profits them most (heh, like a Ferengi!). Strong like 45lbs easily pulls over an adult person 200lbs and almost (or does) fracture bones). Not trainable like breeds who are eager to please but more like constantly asking what's in it for them and when is the reward coming! Smart people use only FORCE FREE non aversive methods to BUILD A BOND with the Airedale! Mental stimulation needs come from the atrocious predatory streak that's different from prey drive but fuels it and means the Airedale has a backwards temperament that seeks excitement and creatures to kill rather than seeking communication with humans and puzzles to solve or new learning. Self-willed overall and definitely NOT human-focused! Not low shedding hypoallergenic like Poodles and other Water Dogs or even like multigen Poodle crosses from highly rare purposeful breeding programs, but more like mixed with Poodle so that the oily soft black wooly undercoat clumps then sheds at least twice yearly and the wiry hairs shed all the time although yes, less than Labs or other fur breeds. Unnecessarily clipped by people who should instead brush and comb regularly and use scissoring to shape to achieve a great coat! (Spray weekly to the skin with water that's pH 6.5-7 (if higher spray after wetting with diluted apple vinegar about 1:15) and use Chris Christersen Big G or equivalent and thick blunted tine butter comb like dematter from shaggy dog products and when wet use human detangling brushes) My Airedale came from a breeder who had been told we would ONLY consider the breed, the bloodlines, the breeder, IFF all conditions were met for at least a few generations for creating great prospective medical alert Service Dog trainees AND of the breeder utilized the guiding systems of Battaglia + Dunbar + Watkins (Avidog) + Killian (Puppy Culture) + results if 3s and 4s on the Volhard Puppy Aptitude Test... and there were pages of check lists provided to be fully filled in, as well as detailed descriptions given of previous example dogs that had the unfortunate trait of normal dog fur which would cause allergic asthma issues moving forward. When the breeder didn't ask many questions of us or conduct educational talks or provide lists of preparation reading and supplies or help show us (prove to us) the validity of claims made that "the one" in mind met all specified criteria, our trust was simply placed with a person we thought was excessively shy but towering with authority from being qualified as judge and board member and having "merit" for decades of involvement with the breed and being in the dog care business.... and we had three solid past examples of justification for trusting such authority when being paired with excellent companion puppies who became Therapy Dogs. However... When serious questions arose just days into the Airedale experience that were answered in ways that twisted reality and accountability and perception, then the Airedale experience began to quickly become confusing then shocking then alarming then tumbled into being terrible nightmare traumatic medically damaging life altering and financially draining. Without going into detail, and focusing solely on the dog alone, I'd NEVER suggest this breed to people with children or elderly or gentle souls or who aren't ready to jog dog a few miles and sniffari 30 minutes daily, or those who are accustomed to "normal" functional companion dogs who seek to have and keep connection to humans. Sadly, I truly believe the glowing praise of the Airedale might come true one day if breeders fixed the dog! Temperament is highly heritable and experiments have shown itbjust takes a few generations to eliminate detrimental traits like shyness or hightened reactivity or predatory prey drive or barking or behaving ferociously.... Breeders shape the first 10 weeks of the 12 that are considered critical so it's terrible if they aren't following guidelines that have been proven for decades to improve dogs ability to be good pets: ENS + ESI + texture stimulation + Avidog + Puppy Culture including proper potty enabling + 100+ diverse visitors + handling regularly by gentle small children + separate weaning bowls to eliminate cause of resource guarding + regular placement on grooming table and practice nail trims and clipper feel + training to follow feet and clapping and "pup-pup" + training to play with toys cycled daily including fetch and tug side-to-side only + training to chew appropriate toys while learning to be comfortable alone in crate... etc And then it's ridiculous to skip having the Volhard Aptitude Test administered that gives objective precise dimensions to what a good breeder observes although subjectively. So for anyone reading to the end, I say stay away from Airedale unless you're fit and strong and love grooming at home and will get an Airedale only from a breeder that follows the preparation guidelines created by very smart people and proven by hundreds of humans thousands of dogs over decades.

While I agree, an Airedale is NOT for everyone--and maybe, in general, not most people--but if that one dog is all you've experienced, then I don't think you can make a blanket statement about All Airedale's. (I don't mean that rudely--just my opinion.) Obviously everyone commenting on here has had an entirely different experience than you had with that dog. True they can be more challenging as puppies, but I've yet to meet one person who had an Airedale that was sorry they got them! Tho she is deeply interested in vermin (which includes cats if not raised with them🥴) that's what they were bred for... My girl loves kids (she is very gentle with our disabled daughter) loves other dogs, all our friends, and even strangers when we are out walking or if she sees we accept them when they come to our home. She is intensely loyal, like no dog we've ever owned. She also is protective, without being aggressive, of our home and property--and I have no doubt if someone meant us harm, that she'd give them the "business end" of her teeth 😉

7 reasons for an absolute pillock that can't handle any dog to get an Airedale Terrier. As a child my parents had 2 Airedale Terriers and they were both great dogs. I still remember when my parents took the dog to have a haircut and when he came back I was constantly stroking it. 🙂

I did not find this useful. You could say these things about any type of dog. I have had 2 Airedales in my life and they were both great dogs and not a public menace. You can train any dog to be vicious, and i is not responsible to be prejudiced just because they are large powerful dogs.

Extremely challenging during the puppy years!!!!! If you'll notice in this video many of the dogs are wearing some type of training collar. They tend to want to walk you, rather than you walking them. Also, as mentioned in the video, recall can be a problem if something catches their attention.

I was told that Standard poodle is a terrier...size energy to run Iditarod sled races....saw it....socks and 3x food....they keep up with standard sled dogs. Husky Malmutes etc...documentaries....FOLK they laughed UNTIL THE DOGS RAN...😮

Standard poodle is not a terrier but a water dog. You are correct that the standard poodle was used for racing. By a guy named John Sater. Initially they lost but then John figured out a way to put something on their coat so they didn't freeze to death and then they won most of not all their races. Because of their success the race organizers banned the breed from racing. A standard poodle if I recall correctly it was a black one that was one of the breeds used to create the standard schnauzer breed. It was the otter hound that was one of the breeds used to make the airdale.

@@GregoryLenetis thanks for upgrade correction on poodles. Should I edit the remark? It is wrong.
@GregoryLenetis5 ай бұрын
@@rogerringold616 If you know how to edit and they allow you to it is up to you. It will make my initial reply seem awkward but I am ok with that. Standard poodle is a great dog and looks alright if left with a puppy cut. They are expensive to obtain unfortunately. Sort of cost prohibitive.

Wow. This is not only wildly inaccurate as far as logistics go but it’s insinuating that they are unruly no matter what. I’ve had this breed all my life and they are incredibly intelligent and although they can be stubborn, they train well and when they are trained, they are just as obedient as the next breed. This is ridiculous. Lastly, I currently have a purebred boy right now who’s almost 100lbs and not overweight. He’s just a tall, broad, large Airedale. If you’re going to claim to be a source of information, make sure the information is accurate.

I always had German Shepherds as k9 partners. For hunting I had several pointers, retrievers, pheasant, coon, bear and duck dogs . I bought and trained on for a person whom was disabled but wanted to hunt . Again, after 3 good pups going on to be great service dogs .I decided my next forensic dog would be a dale. I chose pups from Russian bear hunting lines. I'm active hunter but respond to disasters. Also, working in schools needed a less shedding, more kid freindly dog to check lockers, assemblies etc, games. I figured out my hunting dogs could be my working dogs! So less time cleaning up after a mixed pack and less hair shed everywhere and very good public relations and less stress than what a gsd causes. I'm constantly going. I drive quite a bit to get to disasters and don't have the routine/ regular schedule a gsd likes. So for me, as eager as they are to do something, they are perfect for me. They learn quicker than any hound or gsd I've had. I would say beaucerons are maybe my second choice now for work..if you. Can find one! I run 2 dales and a cesky fousek. He is very vocal and big so in a search or hunt you can hear him before you do the dales. Wonderful rare dog in U.S. Second, dales were first breed used by military in war and serve still today. My old guy is over 16 and still kayaking, hunting and working. Try a gsd. Maybe 5-6 years work before hip Elvis give? You are spot on about energy. But most important as with any breed or animal. It's a about training and consistent handler. As a side note .the dales don't shed so less likely to comprise a crime scene and/ or bring debris, smells and bio from a cadaver and she'd it all over you, car and home. Dogs don't like being cadaver dogs they understand death for us. But consistently the dales have by far most willing in my 36 years.

Airedales are great but I'd really hate to have to raise one in an apartment. If you don't have a reasonably sized fenced in yard (tall fence, they are escape artists) or safe land for your dog to run free in you're going to have a difficult time with their energy. Obviously you can take them for walks but these dogs want to run and play believe me. I highly recommend you avoid this breed if you live in an apartment.
