John, have you ever tried Folgers singles. They're like tea bags filled with coffee. I'm not the biggest fan of Folgers, but any actual cup of brewed coffee sure beats instant. It's easy enough to take them along and not a lot of waste to pack out. I've actually made up my own at home using coffee filters, twist ties, and my favorite brand of coffee.

Brewed coffee mass > concentrated coffee mass > instant coffee mass. Powdered instant will always be the best bang for your gram. If you spend as much per cup on powdered you’ll get the quality/experience of that concentrate… or you love cafe bustello and win the price/quality/experience trifecta. Try them all until you’re sold on one. Smooth, easy mornings.

JK most people who are talking "cowboy coffee" are probably just talking boiling it in their cookpot. Often the point of cowboy coffee is to have a way to make coffee without carrying ANYTHING else. Zero ounces!

@@john_kelley BTW I didn't want that to sound like an "Ayktualy" comment. More like a something else to try for a "Wanna go so UL that you poop every mile to keep the weight down" top 5 video. And no joke, I know a guy who poops as much and as often on trail to keep the weight on his feet down. Which now that I think of it, you need him on the podcast since the podcast has GOT TO BE running low on poop topics! :0

For more great info on "cowboy coffee" check out the Civil War Digital Digest here on KZbin and watch their episodes about "Coffee on Campaign" and "Coffee a la Zouave". While both videos are tailored to making coffee as a Civil War reenactor, both address the principles of making coffee efficiently in a setting where time and/or equipment may be minimal... much like backpacking!

Cowboy Coffee , throw that oversized pot away if making it for one. Use a Kettle like a Trangia 25 0.9Liter , Or a Keith Titanium Kettle or a Uberleben Kessel ( I like the titanium ) it's a cross between a kettle and a pot. Even a 900 ml pot will brew up some Cowboy Coffee. There are dozens of kettles for backpacking that can be used. When I feel civilized it's a Vargo Titanium coffee filter. With this filter the trick for a good cup is to pour the water slowly. The legs fold in and it fits inside my coffee cup. Your Coffee concentrate reminded me of this. For those who have to have an after dinner Coffee , Kahlua Coffee Liquor , 20% ABV ( Alcohol By Volume. )

Best way, take a filter and scoop of coffee in it ,then take sewing string and wrap around top of filter and leave 10inches or so of string hanging off after tying off.....then just pack them in food bag or zip lock and pour hot water over and let steep for 5 mins or so and steep like tea and works good!

Jogo - Same as a bombilla but with a finer filter. I agree, hot coffee through a straw is not for me. However, I have no problem drinking hot yerba mate through a bombilla. Cowboy coffee, do it in your cook pot then use a pour over or Brew Buddy to filter the grounds. Kitche (sp?) pour over, that looks great. Moka pot - love mine, but it is a little heavy. I also have two different sized GSI Espresso makers that works the same way but is much smaller. I have taken my moka pot with me on short overnight hikes. French press - lots of options. In addition to the GSI mug, you can look at french press travel mugs. Jot - Do you make cold brew coffee? 1 Tablespoon of cold brew concentrate plus hot water makes a 6oz cup of coffee. (I like my coffee strong so I typically do 2 T for a 6 oz cup.) I'll do this for long car trips and for camping too. I have seen advertisements for Jot, but haven't tried it yet since is sounds similar to cold brew concentrate. Perked coffee is my favorite for the outdoors, but that's reserved for the cabin and car camping. For backpacking, most of the time lately I've been using the Primula Brew Buddy reusable filter that sits inside your mug. Make cowboy coffee in your pot and use the filter to filter out the grounds. Or put your grounds or loose leaf tea in the filter and pour the hot water over it and let it steep to the desired strength. You can get French Press strength without the French Press weight. Great video. I wasn't aware of the Kitche filter. I need to look into that. Plus the GSI pot would be 'cute' for car camping.

I discovered Cusa Coffee and it is amazing. Sometimes I mix it with a Deathwish packet to make it drinkable. They have lots of flavors and roasts, but my favorite is the vanilla dark roast. They have awesome teas too.. I have tried my Aeropress on short trips, but the weight, plus the weight of grounds packed out are not great. I tried the Snow Peak Press, but was not too impressed and again, the weight of the wet grounds. The Aeropress is much easier to clean.

I think GSI could make a killing if they introduced a titanium version of their Javapress! Then you could put the outer cannister directly over a heat source to boil the water before adding grounds and pressing it with the inner cup. Sure, other titanium French press pots exist, but most are a bit large to be using as the same vessel from which you drink you coffee.

"LOL" he will scream and cry out very loud until you lay him back down on my belly and he falls back to sleep. Man I tell you John I love bonding with my grandson. Isn't "Cowboy Coffee" when you boil water in a normal pot like a Toaks, add coffee grounds directly into the pot, then pour a little cold water into it? That would cause the coffee grounds to fall to the bottom so you can drink the coffee leaving the grounds behind.
