This little tool is easy to make and works extremely well. If you want to make perfect dados on the tablesaw then a simple kerfmaker is the way to go. You can certainly make a much nicer looking one but if you're not worried about aesthetics (not that this one looks bad but there are some very nice looking ones around) then this one is perfectly functional and is very easy to make.

I just made this. It works like a beauty! So simple, yet so effective. Pro tip, plane down the side that will take the wing-nut, so the top side is just proud of the bottom. This will allow the washer to get a really good squeeze on the top half.

I didn't even know such a thing existed, and having recently bought a table saw and having made a sled and making a number of dado joints using just the stop block method which is a bit hit and miss with regards to a tight joint, I can see that this is one of those really should have tools, thanks for sharing.

I am an amateur woodworker, yet I could easily understand how to make the kerfmaker. And guess what, it worked the 1st time. I made 1 improvement, and that was to rough up the underside of the washer; gives a better grip on the jig. You are also good to listen to, with a no nonsense approach. Brilliant! Thanks very much for the video and the demonstration, sir. I've been using the "hope and pray" method thus far with plenty of failure. This takes the guesswork out of it and you don't have to sneak up on the perfect fit... you get the perfect fit right out of the gate. Nice job!

Made this little chap at the weekend , works a treat. One addition I added a dowel in the opposite end to the screw just to tie the two bits together. As the first glue up wasn’t to successful. Thanks again

Thank you for this video. The design is simple, effective, and doable. After blowing up/flinging my first one with a cheap rabbeting bit I made a second try and got a nice one that didn't try to blind or maim me. A couple of tests to dial it in and I am SO pleased with it. I was able to cut 6 long dados with it to build my daughter a bunch of picture frame ledges. Nailed them all on the first try. Wonderful video, Clear to understand and simple to use. The ONLY change I would have done would be to add a washer under the head. I think over time the head would start to pull through after many uses, washer would help stop this problem. Thank you, I plan to make this tool today!!

Nice and simple! :-) If you don't change the blade that often then you can do away with the adjustment screw at the end of the bottom part, then after you've squared up the two parts make a cut, with the same blade that you are going to use, where the two parts meets up at the other end of the the kerf maker. This cut will need to be deep enough to cut through all pf the top part so that it's now a blade's width shorter than the bottom and you should get a perfect fit without having to adjust anything it. When you swap blades, close up the two parts fully, square the ends up and make a new cut along the joint at the top of the kerf maker.

Nice, small variation; cut a scrap piece of tongue and groove oak flooring down the middle and fit together so the groove slides in the toung. Complete the rest as shown. I can't work without one of these.

Thank you. I've made many mistakes on dados over the years -- too tight, too loose. I was thinking about buying the BCTW KM-1 commercial Kerfmaker, but (a) it's out of stock at Amazon; and (b) more than $50 when they DID have it. It's $61 direct from BCTW. The KM-2 is even pricier. I don't believe they're worth it, no matter how well made. Your little DIY kerfmaker works just as well, and it was FREE -- I already had all the stuff I needed to construct one. Works like a champ. One possible improvement: Use a wood-screw with very fine threads for the kerf-adjustment -- easier to make very fine, precise adjustments.
