Chapter 1 5:12 There are some cool differences on Perfect Agent. Carrington Villa you start on the dock, taking the place of the Negotiator. The Cetan Ship level takes a different route through the level, off the top of my head 10:53 there's so many cool little hidden things in this game. After lights out at the start of level 3. Headshot the first 5 guards without being seen and before the lights come on and the 5th guard will drop a Magnum. 17:23 G5 Building Trick - Park The Cam Spy just before the Conference room and leave it there. Later in the level when you put the Safe Cracker on the Console, quickly switch back to the Cam Spy and fly it into the Conference Room. Watch the cut-scene and the alarm will be going off but the cut scene will play as normal, without failing the mission. Also the Safe Cracker Timer will count down. You can not be killed while the cut scene is playing. Great method for unlocking the cheat on this level. 21:39 DO NOT kill this technician working on the Gunship at Area 51 Infiltration. Disarm him, he will pull another gun, disarm him again. He should drop the key card and surrender or run away. Make sure he isn't knocked out or killed. If you do this correctly he will appear on the next part of the level Area 51: Rescue. The floor above you right at the start. (24:01 above here to the right) Go up the lift and double back above where you started. There is a locked double door. The guy should open it for you and now you are in a secret area. Head up and up another lift to find 2 Phoenix Guns. Probably my favourite secret in the game. 28:26 If you run ahead of Jonathon here you can change what happens, though it isn't easy to trigger. You can push him closer to Elvis and the ship while they are talking. He will go with Elvis on the ship with any luck. While you activate the hangar doors and then escape on the bike, which is a pretty cool sequence. The bonus for doing this is that Jonathon will appear at the Carrington Institute later in the game and gun down DataDyne with you outside Carrington's office. 31:12 Airbase Espionage. immediately close this lift door when it gets to the bottom. it will go back up a short way to a floor in between. Take a left and just waltz onto the plane without any hassle. This will start you on the middle floor of the plane on the next level however. 32:32 Air Force One. Not all the grey dudes are hostile to you. The ones in the stairwell have key cards so knock them out stealthily and you can open the side doors for the Double Cyclones. Keep the others alive. They will fight DataDyne later in the level. Also, back of the cargo hold in the depths of the plane. Lower the hover bike using the switch. Then the hoverbike will appear in the next level, making is much quicker to get around. Been writing this as I watch along. I hope it's appreciated and people find it useful or interesting. I have been obsessed with this game for decades and appreciate your video/content and the time and effort you have put in to it. I only covered Chapter 1 on this post so its easier for people to reference. if it's wanted or appreciated I'll happily cover Chapter 2.. Thanks man, Subbed!

@@evprince I added Chapter 2 in a reply to the post. Feel free to use anything I have written as you please. A lot of the stuff I know here comes from N64 Magazine in the UK back in the day. They liaised with Rareware at the time and you could write in with your ideas and rare would try to implement some of the best ones. I know there's plenty of stuff I have missed.

Honestly, I've always thought that the game hints that Johnathan was killed in the Area 51 Escape mission if you let him stay behind. Cuz when the saucer leaves, if Jo stays behind, you see her look at the saucer at the end of the mission. However, when Johnathan stays behind, you see a guard watch the saucer fly away instead and I think that's why he's not at the Institute when the Skedar attack.

Perfect Dark was superior to Goldeneye in every single way. It shocks me how many people talk about Goldeneye as the best shooter on the N64 when Perfect Dark and Turok were clearly the GOATs on the console.
@Wintermute-088
@Wintermute-088 3 ай бұрын
@@traceyrinaldi4759 It's subjective. For some, aesthetics and atmosphere and subject matter would be the defining factor, and GoldenEye has a lot going for it on that front. Not everyone is into aliens and dinosaurs, so for many, an expertly digitised version of one of the best Bond films will always win out, despite any technical arguments.

I remember loading up the MP levels with remote mines to see how much it could take before it crashed. One day my buddy and I made the game actually freeze and we took out the cartridge and removed dust the only way 11 year olds did, turned it back on and all the save files were gone. Without saying a word we turned to each other, turned off the console again, and when we turned it back on the save files miraculously came back. My most fraught gaming moment from childhood

For the longest time growing up I didn’t read any of the additional text information for each level that you can see right before starting it or on the pause screen, but I was doing myself a huge disservice. The mission briefings from Carrington and the Objective breakdowns give you so much more context to what is happening in each stage, and makes the crypticness of the objectives much easier to figure out.

Man, us 90's babies had so many good games to play growing up especially from 1997 onwards; Perfect Dark, Goldeneye, Timesplitters, Ridge Racer, Burnout, Nightfire & Agent Under Fire, Gran Turismo, Halo, Medal of honor, Penny Racers & Road Trip adventure (Absolutely slaps btw) Star Fox, Multiple Star Wars games, Spore, The xbox 360 era was also pretty fuckin sweet too. Cod 4 was crazy at the time it released. Just like an insane amount of enjoyable games when I think about it. Gaming feels very different now, But luckily we have Titans like Warframe and Escape From Tarkov, So things aren't all bad! Battle Royal boom was probably the worst, fucking, thing, ever.

Thanks for making this awesome retrospective. I was 12 years old when this game came out and my parents bought it for me shortly after. I had been playing Goldeneye religiously the year prior and when I saw the sneak peak of Perfect Dark in an issue of Nintendo Power I could NOT wait!! When I actually finally got my hands on it, the story for the solo missions blew me away. I thought this was the coolest premise ever although as an adult I admit that the story is a little over the top. The guns, gadgets, and stealth tactics also captured my imagination. The plethora of secrets and bonuses were awesome too. This game really rewards you for taking your time and thinking outside the box. And the Multiplayer… oh my gosh… Goldeneye on steroids!!! So much fun. I honestly didn’t fall in love with another game like this until the first time I played Halo: Combat Evolved. I’ll forever love this classic. The graphics (for the time), the music… just everything came together for the apex of the N64 and I’m glad I was still a kid to experience it. I can’t say it enough… this game is an absolute masterpiece.

Something funny about Cassandra's secretary is that she isn't small, both Joanna and Cassandra are tall women, that's why you always see all the other male characters at an eye level. Also, she only tilts the pistol when you get really close to the enemies. About the lack of objective clarity, just like Goldeneye, there's a small briefing about the objectives in the pause menu. Not really intuitive nowdays, but it's better than depending on a physical manual, I guess lol. Still, I'm really happy that a first time player was able to appreciate the cool things this had to offer. Oh, and the shotgun was stolen from the Judge Dredd movie, a lot of weapons were taken from movies, wich I love, it's peak nerd arsenal.

@@evprince it's easy to mess. I'm obviously referring to area 51 extraction, when Jonathan says "I'll get it out on that hoverbike now cover me while I open the door" You need to run back to him and it will activate the choice of "Jonathan Go with Elvis, I'll see to the console" Then you Hop on that hover bike and escape. It's pretty cool lol. This game seriously warrants your playthrough on perfect agent, And you should try the save Jonathan route. Obviously the game doesn't give you anything for it other than seeing him show up in Carrington institute for nothing more than two shoot at some shielded folk while you destroy Carrington's stuff for the perfect agent objective... At least I think that's exclusive to perfect agent. I have been playing perfect agent so long I can't remember what objectives don't appear on the lower difficulties.

I was 12 when Perfect Dark came out and I had been saving up my paper round money beforehand to buy it. Months beforehand were spent reading magazine previews... I nearly had a meltdown when I got to the shop and found out I needed another £30 for the expansion pack or else I couldn't play the campaign mode! My Nan saved the day though. PD is still in my top 5 games. I'll listen to the soundtrack while working, I've had a go at speedrunning it as it really is super satisfying (the fact that the included a mission timer shows the foresight). I loved the storyline and vibe and still think it holds up today. The Rare Replay version is awesome.

The campaign was quite something, but what was truly groundbreaking about this game was the multiplayer. You could have 8 bots in it. Alongside 4 people, that's 12 people in a map, that's A TON. You could set up FFAs, team matches, any guns you want, bots had several difficulties that changed their aim and behavior, they also had 'personalities' you could make a bot a revenger, for example, where it would try to kill the person that had killed him above anything else. You could also give bots commands. You could tell them stand somewhere, follow you, attack someone, defend a certain person. I loved as a kid to set bots in positions as if they were guards to create defensible positions. They wouldn't blindly sit there tho, if they needed more ammo or shields they'd leave their positions, grab what they needed and come back. Oh, and can't forget, you could play the ENTIRE CAMPAIGN with a friend. Co-op campaigns are always a huge plus. The campaign also had several mutators you could unlock for fun, some of those unlocks require beating missions under certain time and so on. One of my favs to play around is one where you had 3 Maians following you around. I had a lot of fun just walking around and letting them kill all the enemies for me.

My brother introduced me to this game when i was in elementary school. I probably spent more than 1,000 hours into it. I best every mission on hardest difficulty except for the secret Elvis mission. I got almost wvery speed run cheat, got all the 007 classic weapons from the firing range, did all the gadget missions in the hub area, and beat all the simulation challenges. Those last simulation challenges were a real bitch! I remember all the missions and the dialogue like it was yesterday.

I strongly recommend against using m+kb controls for N64 shooters, including Perfect Dark, as the game was designed with the inferior N64 controls in mind and using m+kb controls trivializes the difficulty. Also, if what you said about gamers only wanting more "serious/mature" stories were true than Duke Nukem Forever wouldn't have been the most hyped game at the time.

I swear Rare need to Make this game an Actual film an Actress or someone as a female that can really make and set as a joanna dark character and do something. A real perfect dark movie with the same sounds using a different soundtrack but same sounds used in its soundtrack, this needs to happen. Aliens X A whole lot of wild Shit. This was in the works but they or whoever killed it. SAME weapons and just make the movie feel like a REAL Secret Agent with all types of stuff. I would pay for this to happen only if rare is directing it lol. Same sound effects in the weapons, same sounds in the music, the plot and story. Iv played this game with the black borders on it set the game PERFECTLY 😮❤❤ hate why they removed or didnt add the 16:9 wide screen options back in the remaster. Goldeye STILL HAD THE OPTION IN THE XBOX VERSION 😭 the littlest things made a HUGE feeling when u added those black borders. It just felt really good. In addition to higher difficulty levels adding more objectives to each level, sometimes it's even more dynamic. On Villa, if you play on Perfect Agent, you start as the hostage negotiator! I also loved exploring the Chicago level with its realistic feeling environment and getting into that secret-feeling underground area. I play the original on N64 with S-Video, a 32" Trinitron CRT, 1.2 control scheme, widescreen mode with "Full" 4:3 aspect ratio, Hi-Res mode OFF for decent framerate, and a wired or wireless controller with analog sticks more perfect than I ever had as a kid (and silicone oil to keep them that way!). I'm a fan of the Xbox remaster but some of the characters' texture changes, not so much. Edit: So I'm playing the Xbox version again, and big gripe: You move so much slower, since it's so difficult to get the correct angle on the stick for diagonal movement.

It’s funny watching an adult play through this for the first time, struggling to take the story seriously. Back in 2001, 8 year old me could see nothing remotely silly in joining forces with a grey alien to rescue the president and fight other aliens while making light-hearted quips along the way. Playing it now, the voice acting is pretty cheesy which my adult self still saw as the ONLY thing that might make it hard to take seriously and now you’re reading the events of the game back to me and it’s like “yeah… Yeah it was about aliens all along 😅” There is a background story you can read in the game that clears up a few questions and adds gravity to everything going on, but it’s entirely optional- you find it along with other story and character info on a computer in the IT Room in the Carrington Institute... As a bored kid with no internet in 2001, you WOULD find this, sooner or later. But nowadays it is the silliest place one could put any information to clarify what was going on. 😂 Still, one of my favourite games of all time and it’s nice to see it still shines out to a fresh audience 20 years later, despite what parts didn’t age so well. 😁

Purely conjecture but I think between this game and Goldeneye, Half-life was released; a game which blended the serious fps with the sci-fi elements, and I can’t help but feel that Rare were a tad influenced by that, seeing they can combine an espionage story to one that features a war between alien beings using Earth (in half-life’s case: black mesa) as their battleground. Not faulting them since Halo does the same notes in their (Bungee) story but from the Marines standpoint (and narrative).

I was obsessed with Goldeneye, and beat the game on 00 agent. But Perfect Dark didn't do it for me. First of all, the game didn't look or run as good as it is on the emulation on this video. Second, by the time it was released, the Dreamcast had already been out, and I was spoiled by the much better graphics, framerates, sound, online multiplayer, and there were many games with fresh and innovative gameplay. Perfect Dark was still held back by its outdated control scheme and confined map designs. If it was released a year after Goldeneye with no framerate issues, or if it was released later as a Gamecube title, it would have been better. But the game was too ambitious for the N64's hardware.

So I noticed many times in your video footage, there was a flash of red for a frame or two on her character model and it would happen often. very brief but there as a flash of red. is that an emulation issue or what is that?

Just got to the end of this. Really great analysis and interesting way of going about it. I never had an N64 so this and Goldeneye sailed by me. I had no idea it was this bonkers to be honest. As for its puzzles. I agree that yellow paint and objective markers are bad but as a point and click adventure lover I believe puzzles should always be intuitive to some degree and a player trying every item on every lock is a sign the designers failed to correctly communicate their intention to their players. It's unlikely I'll play this to be honest but the reboot does look very promising.

Love your work man but again I'm inclined to protest against playing these upgraded retro games. If you wanna show people a retro game then show them a retro game, jankyness and bugs included. Otherwise you're playing something else. It might be really close, but it's still not really the same game. Like as I watch this I'm constantly wondering how much of the graphics look like what I saw when I first played the game. It's a minor nitpick and you don't have to listen to me. But it's just something that kinda bugs me.

I hear you, and I think that's a valid point. However, my intention is to show retro games in the way that will appeal most to newcomers, AND show off the hard work of the communities who do these projects. There are lots of channels that try to show off the most authentic experience of retro games. That's not my goal, and I love sharing the work of modders who don't get much coverage.

As someone who went from a NES to PC gaming and missed many generations of console gaming, thank you for showing me this. Perfect Dark is completely overrated in retrospect. No one was interested in N64 anymore with the PS2 coming out in a few months. Perfect Dark ONLY happened because rare couldn’t afford the 007 license and was outbid by EA. Perfect Dark sold 2.1 million compared to Goldeneye 8.5 million.

Blows my mind there are weirdos out there that would rather play on legacy hardware rather than emulate. Man playing a game at a better resolution and fps is just hard to walk away from once you realize how awful games use to play and run. I cannot believe i grew up with the shit tbh

Eh, the textures and models look weird when you emulate. This footage looks nothing like how it used to, on real hardware with a CRT, and a lot of people want to revisit an experience authentically, including the drawbacks. Doesn't make them "weirdos".

Retrospective as a noun is defined as "an exhibition or compilation showing the development of the work of a particular artist over a period of time." Not necessarily an anecdotal look back! So anyone can make one even if they didn't experience said art as a child or during its release window.
