People forget (or simply don't know) how deep and elaborate the combat simulator mode on this game was. You could have up to 8 bots in a map simultaneously, and each bot could have a customized difficulty and personality. (There were more than a dozen unique personalities that could be assigned to bots, all of which dramatically altered their behavior.) Remember that this game came out before online multiplayer existed, so for its time, the combat simulator combined with potential 4-player local coop made this by far the best multiplayer shooter ever when it was released. (This doesn't even touch the solo missions, cheat codes, training missions, easter eggs, etc. -- the game was packed with a ludicrous amount of content.)

My favorite part of Perfect Dark is that some levels change drastically depending on difficulty. Like in Villa, for the lower two difficulties you start as a sniper saving a hostage on the dock. In the hardest difficulty you start as the hostage, without even a gun. This blew my mind the first time I played through on the hardest difficulty.

Dude perfect dark is amazing! I remember playing this with my cousins back in the day, looking back the thing that wowed me the most was the bullet casing exiting the chamber now that was impressive back in the day.

Man this is pure nostalgia for me right now, I remember playing this game for HOURS on multiplayer with my brother. We used to do co op main missions where I’ve opened doors that he couldn’t go through or run around on maps with sim enemies with max amount of them and highest difficulty. Thanks for this trip down memory lane Jon! Literally one of the best games for the n64 I’ve ever played

Perfect Dark will always have a special place in my heart. I still think it is revolutionary, even in today's standards. The multiplayer is more immersive, addictive, and customizable than any other multiplayer. The story missions were gold, and the atmosphere and darkness to the world of the game is unmatchable. Plus the music is so iconic. I really do hope Perfect Dark is picked up again someday. I want to see this franchise continue, and if it does happen, it needs to have the same level of darkness and maturity as the original, and the music needs to be extremely similar because it is very unique to this franchise.

The multiplayer mode is actually NOT more limited in the remaster. Things unlock as you play more challenges. So, even though you can only play with 4 simulants now, you'd be able to play with more if you do the challenges.
