I don’t think anyone has ever matched David Bowie in the last 100 years, he’s done so much and given the world so much through music and otherwise. He was so intelligent too, he was ahead of the critics and knew talent when he saw it, especially when it was being wasted. He tamed iggy pop and got Lou Reed mainstream during a time when they were falling apart.

I actually remember when this debuted on the tv. I had the tv on and think I'd just got home from work. Was completely mesmerised by it all but I didn't know what it was for, why it was on, it was a complete surprise. There had been no mention of it being made by the BBC or other press, it just appeared out of nowhere. Was very original at the time. I bought the single. David Bowie's voice is so dreamy...esp the line 'You make me forget myself'...what a beautiful sound.

This is genuinely astonishing. Getting so many true A-list musicians to participate is amazing, and the point the BBC was making is that it is the only organization which could do that. Don't know whether that's true, but I've yet to see anyone else do the equivalent. And as for the execution - it's not an obvious choice of song but it lends itself so well to so many styles and it's clear that all the performers were really giving it 100%. Thanks BBC.

Many years later and there’s something in this song that moves me, something about so many great people coming together for one perfect moment in time. The words of the song and the video capture the happiness but also the bittersweet sadness - everything is great but like all things nothing lasts forever - for one day things can be truly special and you can be the best person you can be. I think it reminds me of my childhood too as I remember it being on every evening on the BBC. Most group songs with many singers are feel-good and up-beat and showy but this song feels really genuine and sombre - it’s simply a group of great people working together to give us something perfect…
