Beautiful! As if the intriguing arrangement weren't enough to keep my attention, you throw in a sudden WARDROBE CHANGE to mark the style pivot and my eyelids and eyebrows fly about an inch higher on my face. And then a modulation. A tempo change at the end, and that funky chord at 4:10--I couldn't even write this comment without going back and watching it all again. Delightfully imaginative arrangement, charming rendition. All I can say is, "I don't deserve it--Sonny, you sound perfect tonight."

Wow! Your voice has gotten incredibly supple, and this arrangement really shows off your versatility. The wardrobe change is a delight for the eyes, bringing a grin amidst the gentle heartache of memory. Upon careful consideration, I prefer your version to anyone else's -- with the possible exception of Bocelli.

Hey! this is so good as always but I have a question. So, I am a baritone in my quartet and it's fun and all but I've always dreamed of hitting the beautiful lead notes (not in falsetto) like you do. I saw one of your responses mentioning you started off not so great but then through lots of practice you became as amazing as you are now and I was just wondering if you had any tips as to specifically help with the lead notes without falsetto.

I have some input about this--I was in a situation where I sang several times a week for a couple of years. I sang bass like all of the other men, but I decided that since nobody was singing tenor, that I would give it a try. Struggling with this for about four months, I suddenly found a whole new register in my voice. I was a bass my whole life, and suddenly I could almost hit Frankie Valle and Barry Gibb. I also read that the same thing happened to Joaquin Phoenix when he was filming I Walk the Line. He was the opposite, couldn't sing bass. After months of rehearsal, he found a whole new register. These are just examples, I don't know how to tell you to do it but I know for a fact that it can be done.
@sgtsonny4 жыл бұрын
I heard exactly the same thing about Joaquin Phoenix for Walk the line in an extra on the DVD, where they interviewed the vocal coach. I never experienced it as stumbeling upon a new register. Maybe it's because I never really specialised in a specific voice part and just tried everything at once :D. Thanks for your contribution, George! What you'd like to know is if it's possible to chest the higher notes. I know this is not a popular answer but it all comes down to practise, patience and enjoying the journey. A lot of people want to be able to chest a C5, but get demotivated really fast, because it doesn't seem to work out. I always compare this to having a body builder's physique. I'd love to be very muscular, but I HATE putting in the work. I really don't like going to the gym and working out. That's where the real problem is: body builders have such a great physique, because they enjoyed the hard work, the diet, the countless hours of research,... because of that they have a killer body. The pleasure was in the journey and the destination was a result of that. I LOVED recording, evaluating, trying new stuff, researching technique, spending countless hours in my room singing from morning till night, while my friends were out partying. I still very much enjoy, what most people consider 'the hard work'. As a result I can chest a C5. There are no short cuts, I'm afraid. My advice is to get a vocal coach with which you feel very comfortable and to whom you look up. There is no greater motivator than an idol who's willing to pass on his knowledge. Does it mean spending some money and maybe having to do it through Skype? If that means that you can have an example as a mentor, then that's what it takes! What I'm trying to say is: - Find a great vocal coach - Commit and put in the hard work EVERY DAY - The result WILL follow! I promise! I hope I didn't come across as preachy or condescending :). I really just want to help! Good luck!

@@sgtsonny Hi Sonny, thank you very much for responding. Good gravy are you good. I agree 100% with your advice about a vocal coach, and in fact I got one when I was a very young man. He coached me to strech my voice. The pieces he gave me were Barry Manilow, like New York City Rhythm, a glorious song for a tenor to sing. I tried my best but I only worked with him for a few weeks. Years later, when I was trying to sing tenor with the choir, I remembered those lessons. I opened my throat and projected my voice against my palette, trying to make a shape in the air. After a few months of practicing this way, a new pitch suddenly opened up in my chest and my head. I don't know how to explain it exactly. It had nothing to do with my voice or my breathing. It was a meditative exercise. Anyway, I know it can be done and I hope to encourage anybody but especially any man who thinks he can't sing, or a bass who can't sing tenor. It is possible, it is within your grasp, and the only thing you have to do is change your thinking. If you think that you can't, I have two words: Aaron Neville.
