It's clearer in the books, but part of the purpose of The Hunger Games is to make the Districts hate each other enough, or distrust one another enough, to never unite against the Capitol. There's no communication between Districts, and the Games highlight inter-District competition so they don't trust one another.

You guys will love this. What made Rue's District (starting with who was most likely her father) SNAP wasn't the death of Rue itself. Death always happens in the Games, and they are no strangers to it. What set this one in particular apart was the *bond* between Rue and Katniss, and the way Katniss took the time to honor her in memorandum with flowers and a send-off. Their relationship wasn't something sick and one-sided like those temporary "alliances". It was made out of something pure and selfless, even sisterly. Katniss herself already proved herself to be a stand-up young lady by volunteering herself as Tribute, after all. As for her and Rue, it didn't matter that they were from two different Districts, and meant to be rivals. They were just two good kids who looked out for eachother wholeheartedly, and this was something that has likely never happened before--or at the very least, not often. That solidarity went against everything the Games stood for, TRULY uniting the Districts in earnest over their REAL enemy. Even though that District's riot was short lived and ended in blood, it marked the start of the rebellion. Let the games begin~!

She can’t think about the boys because she has been fighting for survival. ❤

Exactly! She's been living in survival mode just trying to keep her family alive ever since her father died and her mother basically went catatonic. At the beginning of the games, she cared for Gale only as her best friend and felt gratitude to Petta for keeping her and her family alive with the bread. She had no interest in a romantic relationship in part because she never wanted to have children and watch them die in the capitol's game.

some interesting details: (spoiler free to the other movies) -to see how and why hunger games were created in more detail, watch the prequel movie after you finish the first 4 movies -her mom is severely traumatized from when katniss and primrose's dad died and so she doesn’t show emotions well or handle issues well and katniss had to step up, flashback kinda shows this -there were originally 13 districts, the top ones are typically stronger, bottom is typically weaker, so 12 only has 1 sole victor for hunger games on record (haymitch) a girl winning from 12 is a pipe dream, so katniss volunteering was a really big deal -when in captivity before games, she is watching videos of previous hunger games, it’s the only thing the tributes are allowed to watch. she doesn't watch haymitch's games to keep his privacy -more districts don't rebel bc the last district that did, 13, was completely wiped off the map and erased from existence. 11 rebelling after rue's death was a huge deal -the sneaky red head girl, (foxface) from district 5 knew that the only people left were peeta and katniss from12, and then thresh from 11 and cato from 2. she knew she didn’t stand a chance. but we see in her evaluations that she knows every single plant by heart, even katniss is impressed from her plant knowlege in the books and katniss knows a LOT about plants. so it’s a fan theory that she took her own life purposefully with the nightlock berries
@ranniwolves3 ай бұрын
nightlock is not in the plant directory. she did not know what it was, it’s exclusive to district 12 and the only reason katniss knew what it was was bc of her dad’s knowledge. it’s a nice theory but foxface just made a mistake. they didn’t say there couldn’t be only 1 winner, they said there could be 2, so she definitely didn’t give up.
@bonnielovely3 ай бұрын
@@ranniwolves i'm pointing out a popular fan theory. we don't know every plant that exists in district 5. it is never said in the book OR any of the movies that nightlock ONLY exists in 12. we actually know that nightlock exists in another district according to the books (not gonna spoil which one because our boys aren't caught up, but you can see it on the wiki). yes, katniss' dad knew a lot about plants and taught her a lot, but he wasn't the only resource of plant information that exists in the entire hunger games universe and they said 2 victors from the SAME district in both the movie and in the book. so no, she would still need to win alone because the other tribute from 5 died during the cornucopia bloodbath. if you're going to just say the widely recognized fan theory is wrong, then at least have correct information to back up that claim

8:11 you can exchange putting your name in more times for more food. In addition to that, older people have more names in. So 12 year olds have their name in once, multiplied by the extra rations they want. Gale is 18, so he automatically has his name in 7 times. He has 6 siblings who he gets extra rations for, so 7 and 7 times 6 = 49

The chariot scene reflect each district and their specialty: District 1 - produces jewelry and luxury items and is the wealthiest district in Panem outside of the Capitol. Tributes from District 1 were known as "Careers" because they trained for years before competing in the Hunger Games, using their wealth and status to become elite warriors and get a leg up on the competition. Considered most loyal to the Capital. District 2 - masonry and weapon manufacturing for the Capital and train “Careers” who usually ally with District 1 every hunger games to ensure that they survive until it’s only them. Also loyal to the Capital. Cato, the villain, came from this district. District 3 - technology as the people there produced televisions, computers, and other electronics for the capitol. And this is more rebellious of the Capital. District 4 - specializes in the fishing industry. Their tributes were generally seen as strong contenders thanks to their ability to find food for themselves. District 5 - the battery that powers the continent of Panem, as they are solely responsible for all the electricity used, whether it's for bright lights of the Capital or for the industrial needs of the likes of District 12. (The district where that sneaky girl came from, she died from the berries) (they will play a role in the future movies) District 6 - transportation, and they provide other districts with everything from hovercraft to high-speed trains. They are rebellious of the Capital. District 7 - supplied Panem with the copious amounts of lumber the continent requires for its day-to-day operations. The area was said to be surrounded mostly by trees and the tributes of District 7 often use the signature weapon of an axe. District 8 - was known for its work in the textiles industry, producing all the fabric and clothing for the other districts of Panem. They were rebellious as they had their tributes killed in the opening of the 75th games. They also produce the uniforms for the peace keepers. District 9 - grain production and food processing for all of Panem (Capital and districts) District 10- meat, and was focused on the livestock industry, providing protein for all of Panem. District 11 - Agriculture, as the land was covered in orchards, crop fields, and cattle farms. Is poor and patrolled by peace keepers, Rue and Thresh came from here. Opened to rebellion after Katniss’ salute to Rue and her death. District 12 - smallest and poorest district, its primary industry was coal mining. Katniss’ chariot being burning coal. the year before, they had the tributes naked and covered in coal dust (the mines are not safe. Causing Katniss’s dad to die when the mine shaft collapsed and all the workers died) District 13 - was known for mining graphite, but its hidden industry was nuclear technology. once responsible for Panem's military forces and weaponry, they led in the rebellion of the Capital in the war. And as of now, remains as dust and brittle (at least everyone thinks)

It isn't added in the movie, but in the book, when Peeta and Katniss are both pulled out of the arena and back in the jet, they're extremely malnourished and beaten up. It would've been the first time they'd gotten to see themselves in a mirror, and they could barely recognize themselves. They were skin and bones when they made it out, barely able to hold themselves up. I'm sure they'd been running on adrenaline for so long that they hadn't even noticed until it was over. Gives me chills every time I revisit this story, man. Brilliantly executed in both movie and book. For a book and a movie to make you feel as if you were in district 12 yourself, to feel that tension and fear. They did so well with creating this world. Such a sad and scary world.
@MoMoMyPup103 ай бұрын
It isn't added in the movie because it didn't happen in the movie -- the books tell one story and when they sell the rights the movie writers tell another story, because both audiences are different.

@@MoMoMyPup10 understandable, which is why I pointed out that it happened in the book that way. I know every little detail won’t be adapted into a movie from a book series, but the detail I pointed out is still one worth telling for someone who hadn’t read the books. I loved the hunger games movies because they did a real good job of bringing the book to life, and they stuck very closely to the original story.
@emilyk51683 ай бұрын
I don't know if the movie makes this entirely clear, but one way that the Hunger Games works to prevent rebellions is that it pits the districts against one another. There are more people in the districts than in the Capitol, but if they don't work together then they can't overthrow the regime. If just one district riots, like we see happen in District 11, then the Capitol can send enough military to subdue them. The Games create a heirarchy. Districts 1, 2 and 4 are at the top because they train tributes to win the games, and it gives them a false sense of superiority over the others. (That's a bit what Cato's speech at the end is about. With all his fancy training, he still dies like all the other tributes.) Katniss and Rue, who are from two different districts, forming a real and meaningful alliance (not one where they betray each other) is an important catalyst to revolution. There's a part in the books where District 11 takes up a collection to send Katniss bread and it's the first time a District sent a sponsor gift to a tribute that wasn't their own. The districts are starting to work together, Santa Claus isn't happy about it!

1:10:07 those monster dogs were a lot more scarier in the book. They were a mix between wolves and humans they could balance on their hind legs and possessed some intelligence (they signaled/motioned to each other like humans do with their front paws). But the creepy part about them is that each dog resembled the dead tributes. Each of them had the same eye color, hair, and body build as the tributes. And they each wore a collar with the district number of the tribute they resemble. They were sent by the capitol to mess with the minds of the remaining tributes. And also when Cato fell off the cornucopia he didn’t die right away, he was mauled by the dogs the whole night. Cato was wearing high grade body armor during the last act of the book which prevented the dogs from immediately killing him. Once the sun came up and the dogs left katniss was able to put him out of his misery

There were 13 Districts and the Capitol. Capitol children are not reaped for the Games, only District kids. 13 was wiped out in the Rebellion so only 12 Districts remain (why there are 24 tributes). Prim was extremely unlucky with her name only being there once and getting picked. Most years, kids like Gale who take tesserae (put your name in more times for food) are the ones getting picked. This is why it is called the Hunger Games. You are risking starvation or put your name more times with the risk you get picked and most likely die in the Games. Winning means food supplies for you and your District and a new life for you but again, the odds are slim .This is why the poorer Districts like 11 and 12 have so few winners. You are sending starving kids to fight against kids in Districts like 1, 2 and 4 (the Careers) who are not only better fed but often well trained
@katie88813 ай бұрын
The difference this time is Katniss. The point of the hunger games is to pit the districts against each other so they can't make a joint rebellion. Together, they stand a chance. If only one district rebels, they'll get crushed or wiped off the map entirely. Their division makes each feel isolated enough that rebelling seems futile, no matter how horrible things are. The districts don't exactly have a means of communicating and organizing easily. But on live TV for all to see Katniss did something rebellious- she didn't just team up with another district out of strategy (which is the norm), she humanized, respected, and protected a kid from another district, even though it wasn't that strategic. In the same vein, Rue acted with kindness and innocence. Their bond was a moment of unity which in my opinion, inspired enough hope to break through the fear. Seeing Rue be murdered so brutally but cared for so lovingly in death by a kid from another district was a powerful reminder that they were victims in it together, they weren't alone in their outrage. So maybe if they finally release their rage, other districts will support them like Katniss and Rue. That's just my own read of why this time, in this moment, everything changed.

This is such an amazing series, one of the best out there, and a profound exercise in empathy, compassion and understanding for the audience. It is very much a story about trauma, both for the individual and a larger society, choosing compassion in the face of fear and tyranny, when the entire system set up around you forces you against this and encourages only fear, division and brutality, and helps us to understand the inner workings and tricks of tyrannical regimes, control and propaganda. The Hunger Games themselves are a brilliant example of the idea of ‘bread and circuses’; a concept used very effectively by the Roman Empire. The idea was that essentially as long as you give the masses something to sate their hunger for food and something to sate their desire for entertainment, then you can pacify them out of extreme unrest or even uprising. One of the main functions that The Hunger Games serves is, as President Snow explained, to not only intimidate and cow down the districts, and to make an example of them, but to provide just enough hope amid the tyranny that the masses still have some stake in the game/an investment in the status quo, no matter how small, bleak and meagre, but not enough hope that they begin to believe that they can actually change the system. Essentially like dangling a carrot on a stick. When people have ‘too little’ hope, they have nothing to lose, and so may revolt through desperation and even nihilism, reasoning that it doesn’t matter what happens to them and their lives as they have nothing to lose anyway. And when people have ‘too much’ hope, they may rise up out of the belief that they truly can change the way things are, thus making them more likely to lay down their lives fighting for a cause bigger than themselves. As they now hold enough hope for a brighter future to risk the present, and make the sacrifice worth it. The Games have also served to keep the districts divided and pitted against each other. The districts have no present means of communication, and you cannot really travel from one district to another (unless by Capitol authorisation). The only thing that the districts really see or hear of each other is once a year when their children are slaughtering each other in an arena. Of course, the districts outnumber the Capitol greatly, and were they all to unite and rise up as one, they may very well succeed in overthrowing them, but that is precisely why they are kept separate and isolated from each other, with no means of communication or organising, kept in scarcity and under rigid control making survival the ultimate focus of their lives, pitted against each other through the loss of their children. What made this particular instance unique was Katniss’ display of compassion and humanity. For 74 years the districts have been killing each other in an arena under order of the Capitol, but this was the first time that they really saw an example of compassion, empathy and humanity in the face of tyranny and brutality, and true unity between districts. What ultimately made district 11 rebel wasn’t Rue’s death, as the districts are no strangers to the death of children, but the way that she was cared for by Katniss and protected and honoured even in death. That two tributes from different districts could form such a bond and protect and look out for each other even against all odds and strategy, defying the very concept and practice of the games themselves, is what ultimately sparked the fires of rebellion. The Capitol can easily destroy rebellion in a single district, but not if all 12 joined together, which is why President Snow was so serious about ‘containing the spark’. He could see the fire that Katniss was starting. Ah, and just for context to help better understand the relationship dynamics going forward too, Katniss has never had any interest in any kind of romantic relationship; she has always been solely focused on the survival of herself and her family, and in her own mind, has little time or room for anything else. Gale is the only other person in district 12 that she is ‘close’ to, other than her mother and sister, but that relationship is purely platonic, and also heavily based on survival, as they hunt for food to provide for both of their families and just decided that sticking together would be the better option, as they made a good team. Gale does have romantic feelings for Katniss, but he has never really outwardly expressed it to her, and while she is vaguely aware that his feelings may go a little beyond friendship, she ignores it and kind of tries to say as far away from that subject as possible, as she doesn’t feel the same way but values him as a friend and partner, and is extremely awkward and uncomfortable with romance altogether. She does not really understand it and has never made room for it in her life, as she is so stuck in constant survival mode and is already dealing with trauma from her life in District 12, even before the horror of the Games. Katniss has started developing real feelings for Peeta during the Games (even though it began as just the ‘star-crossed lovers’ ploy to gain sponsors) but she doesn’t really recognise it, or understand what it is that she is feeling, as she has never experienced it before and has blocked herself off from it so much, so she doesn’t quite realise or understand exactly what Peeta means to her, only that she cares about him deeply for some reason and wants to make sure that he’s alive and safe. And as for Peeta, his feelings for Katniss are very much genuine. He’s a very smart and socially savvy person, so he knows how to play the game with regards to the Capitol and winning support and alliances, and so while the whole ‘star-crossed lovers’ thing was very much strategic, he was also being very honest. He was just using the truth very cleverly in order to win support for the both of them. While he was in the games, his initial ‘alliance’ with the Careers was also strategic - he allied with them to try to keep Katniss safe and lead them off her trail. Hopefully this will help with watching the rest of the series. The books are definitely worth a read, they are captivating, and everything is explored in so much more depth. xxx

I love these movies so much! Peeta always had a crush on her, everything he did was to save her so she’d win. He’s pure heart. When he gave her the bread she was starving , her mom was depressed and her sister was also starving. He burnt the bread on purpose knowing he’d be beat by his mom so he could give it to her. Haymitch , is a tragic and amazing character. His backstory is really sad, but on top of that he’s the only winner of district 12 so he’s been the only mentor for years, had to see all his tributes die for years. Gale and katniss were never in love, he only finds he has feelings for her once she’s in the hunger games with Peeta. She cares about both but not in I’m in love way. She’s always been about survival and that’s all. Districts are kept separate except the higher up ones and only the winners do get to know each other. This helps control communication between them and really they only see each other during the televised shows where they’re enemies . It’s a way for the capital to control them. But Katniss and rue show real compassion for one another, and her kind way of paying respect to her in death is what causes district 11 to partially rebel.

The director of the movie tells a different story than the author of the books -- there is no obligation to the details of the books once the rights are sold, and that's why she tries to assure Gale that what happened here was 'just an act' -- she was, for the time being, protecting what she had with Gale.

By the way when Haymitch said “They don’t take these things lightly” in the end, he was talking from experience. He won his games because he outsmarted the capitol and won in a way they didn’t intend him to. As punishment they killed his family and girlfriend which is why he was never the same after that and became an alcoholic over time. They don’t really explain a lot of this stuff in the movies but similar things happened to other victors as well, for example Johanna Mason or Chashmere and Gloss (The district 1 tributes in the second movie)

Ok, so you already guessed it but the reason Gale has his name in so many times is because once per month they can put their name in for Tesseracts, which are rations of food, grain, oil and maybe even medicine. It’s not a lot but they would likely die without it. That is also why Gale and Katniss hunt even though it is forbidden, since they would all starve without the extra food. District 12 is the poorest district since their main resource is coal and almost all men work in the mines. Because there are many accidents, a lot of the men die early, leaving the rest of the family to starve most likely. This is also what happened to Gale and Katniss. Gale has a lot of siblings (I don’t remember the exact numbers but somewhere between 5 and 8) and they are all very young, additionally his mother is deathly sick and his father died in the mines so he is the sole supporter of his family. It’s already hard to get enough food for yourself but to sustain a family this big on your very own is nearly impossible and I think some of his siblings have died already at that point…

@@AkinReacts Hereditary is an a24 film about a family going through ..... too much to say without spoiling lol. It's technically a horror, but everyone can agree that the best way to describe it is disturbing, creepy, and very unsettling. Truly a wild ride until the very last second. Kill Bill is a quentin tarantino film about an assassin getting revenge on her former group who betrayed her with attempted murder, hunting them down one by one. It's action packed, bloody, and has brilliant choreography. excellent excellent excellent. definitely a must-see

The Hunger Games prevented rebellion in a few ways, one was the control they highlighted - reminding the districts not only can they kill they're children but they can make their children kill each other. Any whisper of rebellion was answered quickly, usually by threatening or killing loved ones. This instilled constant fear but also gave people a false focus to hope for "maybe I can win" and a sense that if you did it's partly your own failure - playing into trauma responses of shame. The Hunger Games also fostered animosity between the districts, preventing them from uniting to rebel. Communication was suppressed between districts and they only came together to kill each other. But you're right that it was eventually going to break and lead to a revolt because it was severe oppression and eventually something's gotta break.

Gale is in the draw so many times because he's 1) turning eighteen this year, when you're eighteen your name is entered 7 times: one for each year you are eligible and each years adds up. So age 12 = 1 vote, 13 = 2 votes, 14 = 3 votes, etc. 2) Because he applied for what's called "a tessera" kind of like a bulk benefit system: a year's supply of grain and oil for one person in exchange for your name in the voting once per benefit claimed, and you can only claim one per year. Gale applied every year for himself AS WELL AS for every member of his family, (Gale's family is around 5-6 people). His votes added up each year through age and the needing of the oil and grain to avoid starvation or freezing to death. Katniss does the same, but she can only claim 3 tesserae a year (herself, mother, sister) whereas Gale claims 5-6. District 12 is so poor that most of the families rely on the tessera and it's something you'll likely die without, almost everyone is forced to take it. I'm pretty sure it also pushes people to keep having children so they can claim benefits once that child is 12-18 years old, and then so on with the next one.

In the beginning, the movie doesn't show that Katniss never wanted to be close to anyone because she would lose them in the games. Gale is a hunting partner. They would gather herbs and hunt for each other's family. In the movie they did put in where Katniss says she doesn't want to have kids. Meaning not getting married in this society. No romantic interests. Peeta said that true he's not going to win because in his mind he would protect her and die for her. His mother knew it and that's why she said that district 12 would finally have a winner. Peeta loves Katniss but he also knows where he stands, and that's part of the game they have to play. Gale has a misconception of what Katniss is to him. That's where a lot of confusion begins. Keep in mind that Katniss is still a child and has a social disorder. She just trying to keep her family alive in the fogkup society that they live in. Love your reaction ❤️made a subscriber today. 🖖

So to kind of explain why rues death set them off into rioting, overall it’s well known that the capitol doesn’t care for the districts in the slightest and they had to live in deplorable living conditions. There have been riots before but that always led with the capitol basically overwhelming them and it just hurting them in the end so when you are used to that it kind of evaporates any wish to rebel. And in relation to rues death the capitol never really treated the bodies of the victims in the games with any semblance of respect they would just have drones pick the bodies up so in a way they became desensitized to it and it kind of didn’t hit them in the way that it would in any other environmental but seeing another person from an entirely different district show more empathy and respect to the person and there burial than anyone else hit them hard. Like actually showing that yeah that person died in a horrible way and it’s not right in the slightest essentially validated there feelings they’ve been harboring about the capital for years so that’s why they started rioting after

What the movies never explain is why it’s called the hunger games. Essentially, you have to put your name in the bowl more times to get rations. You can also put your name in multiple times for each member of your family. Each year, the amount doubles. So Katniss put her name in 4 times her first year, then 8 in the second year, so on so forth. Once for yourself, by law, and then an extra time for yourself and each member of your family to get food. All of this is to get food and provide for their family. It’s explained that Katniss’s name is in the bowl 20 times in the first reaping. That’s what she means when she says “your name’s only been in there once” to Prim. Gale has many siblings so his name is in there 42 times.

Another thing I loved in the books that unfortunately got cut from the movies was Cato and Clove’s relationship. We don’t really know what their relationship was but many consider them the “true star-crossed lovers”. In the books he was there when she died, and he desperately tried to reach her in time but was too late. He cradled her in his arms and cried, begging her to stay with him even though he must have realised it was futile. After that he went on to hunt Thresh down and killed him as revenge. I loved that aspect of the story because it instantly humanized the careers. It also makes the moment in the end where Cato said “I’m dead anyways. Always was, right?” even more meaningful since Clove’s death was the moment the games got personal and lost all their glory to him. You have to consider that he was born in a district where the games are seen as literal games: A chance for glory and wealth. District 1 and 2 are also very close to the capitol and since they always dominated the games he considered himself special. In his eyes he belonged more to the capitol than to the poor districts so only when Clove died did he realise that the capitol didn’t see him that way. To them he was a just piece in their game; expendable, like everyone else. I always really liked the careers because their stories are very multifaceted, it’s a shame most of it got cut… Anyways there is a lot of cool stuff and extra information in the books that weren’t included in the movie but I think in this specific case the problem was the age of the actors since Cato’s actor was 18 and Clove’s was 15 I think.

Just did a quick calculation. 23 die per year (there is one exception where more died but I am ignoring that). 74 years. That is 1,702 who have died in the games. In the book it is clear Katniss missed the first shot because it was her first time using that particular bow. She had to get a feel for it. If you watch, with the second shot she aims, the adjusts for the bow visibly because she already knew how the bow would shoot. This is very realistic.
@Bubble1703 ай бұрын
They also make a mistake in the movie. They gave Katniss a high score to make her a TARGET. They didn’t do it because they liked her or whatever. They were angry with her defiance after shooting the apple, so they gave her the highest score to make sure she was a target for everyone in the arena.

Haymitch won in a way that pissed off President Snow so much so that Snow had Haymitch’s family and girlfriend killed. Not only that but to have every one of his tributes die no matter how hard he may have tried did a number on him too. Katniss and the love story is his first ray of light in a dark tunnel. When you are finished with this series and if you want to hear more Hunger Game stories Christian Blanco here on KZbin has an entire series dedicated to each and every game. Okay he first few are all text videos with images but he does redo them in later videos with voice over.

The mutts that chase them in the last part of the Games are even more horrifying in the books because they're made up of parts resembling the dead tributes. Katniss herself comes face to face with a mutt that's described as having Rues curls and brown eyes; eyes now filled with hate.

Us as viewers are more similar to the Capitol than we think. We cheer for Katniss to win (understandably) and for the deaths of the other tributes. Forgetting that all of the tributes are children at the end of the day. They had no choice in this. Even districts 1,2, and 4 who are literally trained from birth and volunteer. They are all victims to this system and every time a tribute dies or kills not only are they affected physically and mentally but their families and districts are as well. No parent should have to watch their child die.
@h3llolime2223 ай бұрын
yeah totally, we’re similar because we cheer for a fictional character in a fictional story. while the capital people are cheering for the death of real children. They’re like basically the same thing right? In the same way that killing somebody in a video game and killing somebody in real life is the same exact thing right? 😐😐😐

I will say, from reading the book, it was pretty clear that District 11 was general area of the deep south in the United States, which does have the most concentrated population of black people. But also, I think most of what District 11 went through was symbolic of the times of slavery and the Civil Rights movement in the U.S. I think it was a really powerful way of showing that sometimes moving forward and progressing in a bad direction, can actually push society backwards.
