Good arm and wrist structure in the golf swing is essential if you are going to build and powerful and repeatable swing.
However, the movements of the arms and wrists are quite complex and it can be very easy to get them wrong, leading to poor golf shots and lots of frustration.
If you want to build good arm and wrists structure in your backswing, this drill is a SIMPLE and effective way to do just that. Learn how to set the desired arm and wrist bends at set-up, then you can simply keep them there as you turn your body to complete the swing.
Add more structure to the movement by holding something between your arms as you do this movement. “Squeezing” the arms together throughout the golf swing can provide much needed rigidity to the swing which helps to maintain and manage the radius of the swing arc, leading to more repeatable and consistent ball striking.
The STRUCTURE BALL from Watson Golf is one training aid that can provide you with the feeling of keeping the arms more together and help to teach you how the arms should work throughout the swing.

How are you not on tour I just watched this before my round of golf now my score was absolutely garbage ! But I don't care it was rotten cos my 8iron went 215 yards into the lake I was playing well short of with my normal golf (and that was my round too long !!!!) I did thin a fair few but even the thin shots were epic 😎 if I wasn't married bro 😂😂😂😂 absolute legend of a golf teacher 🎉

Rob - love your content. One of the areas I would appreciate a video on is on the key movements to achieve the Stack consistently during setup. I find as I play I get lazy and don’t stack properly. This causes all kinds of imbalance. Focusing on achieving the stack after positioning feet; shoulders over hips, is critical for me to enable the proper balanced weight forward and then backswing sequence. Please give us the setup keys for stack … thanks!

Hi Rob, I tried this drill this afternoon hitting some balls down at the park. I was absolutely hitting the balls perfectly starting from step two and turning. I was blown away. I might be using this method on the course if I keep hitting them so good 😂. My question is how to I get there from the takeaway? Do you have other videos that show the complete backswing. Thanks for the great video.

Thank you Rob! Used this method today. Really worked for me today for mostly of the 2 games (18 holes x 2) i played today. The only thing i wasn't prepared for was, I should have clubbed down since i was hitting further... which is good. I think the hinge def added to the yardage.

Rob, I came across a short you did just recently based upon this video and though I may have seen this full video previously, the short just had a dramatic and profound effect on my swing and ability to strike the ball with some authority. Just rehearsing that exercise did it for me. I do this frequently, even at home and I am now making a strike on the ball that feels so much more controlled and far less complicated. I think I have finally understood and felt what compression actually is!

Rob, great drill! I actually recently played like this before your video came out. I felt self-conscious at first at how “silly” I looked starting from that position, but it was easily my best ball striking round of the year. As you say, it solves many of the problems I have which is the elbows coming apart at the top of the swing and not keeping the right elbow in front of my body coming through. I still need more work with the external rotation of the right arm that you advocate but it was really a game changer and so much easier than the mess I was making previously

That wrist set tip really helped me with swing path and swallowing the club. Getting me swinging more around than up. I cannot set it and then swing, that feels weird to me. But if I set it right when I start the takeaway it really helps. Thanks for the tip.

Hi Rob. I know that connection of our forearms to our pecs is important in the takeaway but at what point can the right arm connection move slightly away from the pecs at the very top? I find that if I try to keep that right bicep connection to my pecs all the way through the backswing clear to the top I lose a lot of power. At the very top can that right bicep come off the pec some to build some width? Thanks!

Rob I've spent thousands of dollars on lessons, most don't compare to your youtube channel. Thank you so much for this and countless other quality videos. One question if I may, in P2 you have the butt of the club over the golf ball in this video which is very different from how you demonstrate P2 in your other videos (example: kzbin.info/www/bejne/l3qZfq2rprGXndWV)

Rob, thank you for this. I continually have dealt with early extension and a flailing trail arm. This past weekend was especially frustrating with making good contact on my drives but pulling them left (straight but not a hook) and topping my fairway woods. Yesterday, I went back and reviewed your video on "fix early extension" and this video. I had purchased the structure ball and really have used it on 1/4 - 1/2 shots, finding it awkward on full attempts. I spent my practice time just working on your recommended drills. ( I have a small net with foam balls in my yard - only thing allowed in our complex). I struggled with squeeing my elbows together attempting full shots. I decided to try to bring my elbow a little more forward in the setup (a little weaker right handed grip) and it made a world of difference. It went from feeling awkward and mechanical to very comfortable and fluid. I had one of my best days practicing since I began following you in the past 6 weeks. I went to the range with my playing partner today and he was amazed at the difference of my swing, finish, ball contact and direction. A very fun range day, looking forward to the couple of rounds I have scheduled later in the week!!!

Great content as always Rob! If I may ask, would there be a reason not to establish that external rotation in the trail arm at setup in my normal swing? I’m just thinking that’s one more moving part I could potentially remove. I would love to hear your thoughts. Thank you as always.

Hi Rob. I've learned a great deal from your content. Thank you for sharing your wisdom. Quick random question for you. Have you tried the gravity fit training tool? Was considering purchasing and wondered if you had any insight to share. My desire is to maintain better and more consistent connection between my hands/arms and body back and through the swing and keep my torso rotating back and through as well.

Wow, I just tried this out after watching, I hope this is the miracle solution to more consistent ballstriking. It's also an excellent way to keep the lead arm straight and shallow the club when swinging. Starting with half swings and it seems to work very well. How do you transition this into a "normal" swing though?
