As an American, It is completely bananas that a country about half the size of California can have so many accents. Effing fascinating.

What may make it more understandable is that their country is incredibly older than your country, and that the majority of your country's accents actually stem from a smaller subset of their accents.
@bugtracker152
@bugtracker152 Ай бұрын
@@powdergatethe reason why Britain has so many accents every 20 miles is because there were not so many means of global communication and broadcasting, hence, every village had its own accent. In America all those accents are coming from certain groups of settlers moving to the particular areas, frequently mixing with native people and settlers from other countries and it was not long before the radio and other means of communication came into play.

@@mollypvoiceaccentcoach I got excited about an accent course. Sad it was a Skillshare link. Not a good company. I got identity thefted a few years ago (hugely annoying event) and every company I dealt with was understanding and happy to help. Skillshare refused to refund the fraudulently started subscription, spent days being childishly rude to me via email (I have never wanted to Karen so hard. It is to date the only customer service I have had a problem with) AND THEN THEY SENT LAWYERS AFTER ME threatening legal action for requesting my credit card company perform a chargeback. They backed down and it didn't go to court, but WHAT THE HECK. It was over like a $120. Messed up. I'll stick with your free KZbin content.

You are very, VERY good at explaining these things. Makes way easier to understand. I'm Brazilian but I live in Japan and work with some Australians and a girl from UK. My English is not so good but they can understand when I speak. Anyway, I've always notice the sound of the word "right" but I never understand how to mimic the sound. But now, after seeing your explanation, I was able to do it!!!!!!! Not saying that my accent is perfect but the sound I could mimic now. That's so cool!!!! It's like, almost start to say the "V" sound (without saying the V sound) but switching quick to "R" sound. I don't know if make sense what I'm saying but that's how sounds a little bit for me. Please do more videos like this one.

A couple phonetic notes for those interested: Labiodental R /ʋ/ is a distinctly London and South East BrE feature. SSBE t is dental, rather than labiodental, as that'd imply it's like a v or f. It's not dropping the t, you're replacing it with a glottal stop /ʔ/ You have a weak vowel merger between your STRUT /ʌ/ and schwa /ə/ in most situations, which is common among younger speakers. Most centering diphthongs of RP (those ending in schwa) like in near /nɪə/, have split into a weak and strong form. In their more common weak form they're either long monophthongs /nɪː/ or very slightly centering, while their strong forms contain the semivowels /j/ and /w/ - /nijə/ . Strong forms are used for emphasis. "Oh the ball's hɪː" vs "I'm over /hijə/ (more precisely /hɪi̯ə/)" "it's ɑː dog" "It's awəz (/au̯əz/)" Very informative and helpful video either way!

English is not my first language, but now I wish I had learned the English accent as well as the American accent when I started learning... Now, because I'm so used to the American accent, my accent involuntarily changes when I speak. it will be difficult to learn completely, but it is worth it.

Dear Molly, I was born in Kent and have modern RP. However after living in the USA ( Tennessee ) for 11yrs I can assure you they shorten their vowels totally. I'm thinking for someone who does not come from the UK to change their accent will be very hard. Excellent tutor or not.

Thank you for the video! Was really helpful. I’m originally from Ukraine trained from the young age in Oxford English (perhaps in its outdated version) strongly impacted by my native language accent tending to roll the R. Besides that all those American movies, songs and tourists from America had a strong footprint on us - ESL speakers. Now been an immigrant and a citizen in the US I realize that I still use a lot of that RP accent mixing it with rolling R but only in half of the cases, driving locals completely nuts. I also tend not to drop or flap the T in words like waTer unless it’s the end of the word followed by other part of the sentence. Locals usually don’t have problems understanding me, but they definitely hear me as a funky beast from another planet 😂

Surrey was the birth place of Percy Bysshe Shelly who is one of my favourite poet. Ask not the pallid stranger's woe, With beating heart and throbbing breast, Whose step is faltering weak and slow, As though the body needed rest. Whose wildered eye no object meets, Nor cares to ken a friendly glance, With silent grief his bosom beats, Now fixed, as in a death-like trance. Love from India.

Hi from Sri Lanka 🇱🇰 I love watching videos about the RP accent because I am trying to learn it. An interesting thing, here in Sri Lanka we still pronounce some words similar to how there are pronounced in heightened RP. I think that was the accent the British left us after the independence in the late 1940s and so, all the English teachers picked up from that and continued. As a result; heightened RP sounds more familiar to me.

I come from California, but I have had a lot of speech therapy as a child, so my accent tends to be a very precise not quite British and not totally American accent. So, I guess transatlantic maybe, but definitely rohtic. I articulate my words and don't pronounce my t as d. However, my kids have a decidedly California accent.

I have a strange form of northern tinged RP as my natural accent. I ought to have a mild Mancunian accent owing to my upbringing but I don't and any attempt to sound more Mancunian leads to me sounding like that Harry Enfield sketch, so I have increasingly erred towards a formal RP. I cannot bring myself to form my 'a' sounds in the southern manner though. I always feel like beating myself up when I hear myself trying to.

Hi Molly, as a non-native English speaker trust me most non-natives like either RP or the American accent, they aren't really into other regional accents to be honest. So as a brit I am pretty sure you are going have a good reach if you do more videos on modern RP. Also you are going to benefit more if you make videos on topics like musicality, jaw movements, breathing, rhythm, vocal projection etc because those aren't that common on KZbin. Cheers!

Hello! Thank you for your comment. I hear you- but please remember I love all accents and think they should all be celebrated. I work mainly with actors and will always try to create content that is inclusive to everyone. I’ll definitely do more modern RP videos, but my voice and other accents will also stay :)

That is definitely what I need, to learn the musicality, intonation, tone and so on of the RP accent.

Big part of an accent is also the vocabulary used. Do you have any recommendations(movies, books etc) that might help with that?

Good point- that’s actually more of a dialect and slang question which isn’t so much my field! Any reality TV would be where I would start- it’s trashy but gives you a good idea on what British slang is like!

When I watch old episodes of Doctor Who (1963-1980s) I find myself thinking a lot about their accents. The general consensus seems to be that these earlier years were all using RP and I've even heard British people describe the show as being full of posh accents. But when I listen to William Hartnell, Patrick Troughton, Jon Pertwee, Tom Baker and Peter Davison they all seem to have different ways of speaking. For the most part it's not something I can put my finger on (except in Tom Baker's case... I have found some particular things he does, and as far as I can tell only he does them.) but there do seem to be subtle differences between them. So are they really all the same accent? And if so what is the distinction I am hearing? Is it regional? Social class? Personal? I would be really curious to know if these different variations really all come under the umbrella of RP.

Great video! Thank you Do you think would be possible for a Spanish to sound more British(from south England) by practicing? I’ve been living in London for the past 5 years and when I speak in Spanish people are not sure if I am Spanish or I am an English person who lives in Spain. But when I speak in English I don’t think I sound British at all.

The approach I think works most successfully is about embodying the work rather than just mimicking the accent… the link in the description of my recent videos has a link to a skill share course- I believe you can get a free month. Molly, why do you drop your t sounds in words like bottom (T-glottalization)? Reference at 4:01 I attended private school for 3 years in Gloucestershire 45 years ago, and that would never have been considered proper RP in those days. If anything, Ts were more prominent in RP than with other accents.

Hello! Great question- I have a more modern RP (SSB) where some glottals are becoming more prominent- especially due to my living in London- remember accents fluctuate a lot so take every “rule” with a pinch of salt 😊

@@mollypvoiceaccentcoach Thanks for the response. I thought it was likely influence from London. And of course, you're right accents fluctuate, and it's likely if I visited my old school the modern accent would differ from my memory.

It's a bit strange that you consider the strut vowel [ʌ] to sound very similar to [ə] while the pronunciation dictionaries like e.g. CUBE say that it's the bird vowel [əː] that is schwa-like (just look at the symbol). And I actually tend to agree with the dictionary. Your schwa as you say in uuuh (at 4:05) sounds more like the vowel of bird (at 4:18) than like the vowel of strut. And interestingly, your uh-oh does start with a sound closer to [ʌ] than [ə].
