If you haven’t prepped your pen first the waxy protective coating they use for shipping repels most of the ink, grab a microfiber cloth and some warm distilled water, let the pen sit in the waters for a couple minutes and wipe it off with the microfiber cloth

Man, you got that Palmer Script down packed. Love to see your penmanship. I practice PS but my letters don't look that good and I don't use arm muscle movement. But when I use a dip pen, my letters start to look a little like that.

This really helped me! I have a pack with a feather dip pen with multiple tips and ink. I have tried the thicker ones withoiut really knowing how to use them nor why the ink ran out so fast. Now i tried with one of the smaller tips and it got alot easier!

Cursive writing calligraphy and quill pens, dip pens and calligraphy pens are a lost and forgotten art never been taught how to use them but I know how to use them it's very fun and amazing to use

Do you not use a reservoir with the Italic nibs? I find them very helpful as they hold more ink.

I rarely use broad edge nibs. Some of the nibs I own have reservoirs and some don't. It depends on the type of ink I'm using though. If the ink is flowing to freely, I only want a little bit of ink on the nib to produce crisp edges on the strokes.

Question: how do you prevent the smudge at the beginning after the dip? Especially with the broad tip nibs?

You’re putting too much ink on the nib. You can swipe it on the rim of your ink bottle/holder to remove excess ink.

Ps, I also prefer reservoirs on my dip pens as this saves a lot of frustration having constantly dip.

How do you hold it? Which way is the nib supposed to be? How much ink do I put on the pen? Why does the pen feel like it’s scratching? Why does it make such a mess? Do I have to use it gently? So many questions

You can hold it like you would normally hold a pen or look on this channel for writing with your arm and Palmer Method. The nib should face down with the curved part on the bottom, the hole should point up. Dip the pen to the top of the reservoir hole and tap or shake once over the bottle to get the excess ink off. It might be making a mess because it can't hold ink. Make sure you prepare the nib, use dish soap to remove the oil coating on the nib. Pointed nibs are going to be scratchy, try using very light pressure, especially on up strokes, so it writes easily in all directions. When you're done using it, take the nib out of the pen holder, rinse it with water and rub off dried ink. Dry the nib off well or it will rust.

I received a quill pen set for Christmas last year, and I'd like to use the broad-tip nib for a project, but I've had a lot of difficulty getting it to even work - I either have too much ink or not enough 🤷‍♀️ Am I missing something? Do you have any advice?

Broad nibs can be tricky. It helps to write on a slanted board/desk, but not necessary. Some broad nibs I write with require me to put very little ink on the nib while with others I can just dip the entire nib into the ink well. You'll have to experiment with how much ink you put on the nib, the type of ink, adding a drop of water to the ink, and different types of paper.

I thinking going out side and down to park is a good thing you make it sound bad yes you can spill your in that why I told people dont take all your ink but just small bottole that way if it spills and brakes jar then you dont feel bad or out of money

as far as i know, the oblique holder isn't required for spreading it as it uses pressure to split the nib and not angle
