A few months ago Zimmerman Auto Body Supplies stopped at the shop to take a paint scan of the Schroll 32. After two attempts they created a paint to match the aged paint on the the body. Fast forward to today and we are finally ready to spray the patch panels to help age the repairs. Matt first applies two coats of Eastwood Rust Encapsulator, first coat with red and the second with black. The red and black layers match other places on the body where they are below the green paint. Matt then sprays tire cleaner at random spots to prevent the paint from adhering and to help give an aged worn through look. After some sanding and light overspray the paint looks like its always been there! Let us know in the comments what you think!

People will often say "if only that car could talk," and in a way that's what you are doing at ITG, letting the car talk by preserving as much of its history as you can. You put a lot of effort into matching the paint on the restored sections and really pulled it off. Well done.

That color is pretty close. The way you dusted the black on there and rub it some makes it look so close to the old paint..great job. TAPE TIP; if you will use a wide piece of tape and roll it back on itself some it will create a soft edge..

Although it isn't what I would have done with the paint, I appreciate how you restored the original intent of the builder. Mother nature did a good job too. That car will be great when its finished.

Nicely done! It's great that originality is finally starting to be appreciated in the old car community. Theres a fine line between a car that needs a paint job and one that should be left alone and I think you made the right call to preserve this car as is.

Quick tip. Keep going !!! You can panel fog the green, up the sides. Then fog whatever matte clear. Fog again with whatever color primer, & black. Manipulation is a layered thing. It isn't like you're gonna' f*ck it up. You won't. Whatever you do, take care always. Favorite part of my week .. is watching y'all work. Thank you, for sharing.

Matt, I just wanted to say this.. the couple is your car, do as you want... I understand not wanting to spend 3 to 5 thousand dollars on a full paint job.. so your idea of patching the paint is a awesome idea and looks great... and if you counted your labor and supplies it is more cost-effective than hiring it done... thank you for showing us how to do things like this.

Think you hit it just about right. It looks like the repairs you've done were done a while ago, which I'm sure is what you were after. Those old remnants/scars of numbers on the side look really good.

Awesome job, i did my 65 c10 the same way when i replaced the rockers and cab corners, you can also use paste wax on a chip core brush and spread it around then throw some play sand in the wet paint wipe off after the paint dries, makes for awesome texture

Everyone has their own idea of how they would do it. For instance, I love the way the passenger side came out; however, I would have brought the red up into the bare area in the center of the driver’s door. But at the end of the day, it is your car and it really did turn out great. I respect the work you put in and can appreciate the artistic vision you had.

I don't view this as fake patina at all. Color matching and age matching. Loved the video. I admit I was talking loudly to the screen when you were making a hard tape line for the blend. Great job. Salt works wonders for making the pitted random specks that are exhibited in the original remaining paint. Large grained salt flicked on top of the wet black primer. Anyway...love what you are doing.

Looks awesome! I was a little worried watching you mask it up, creating a hardline…but you got it out. If you back-mask that area to be blended, you won’t have a hardline. I really like how you used the black to fill in areas, and erase the line. There are a few masters to doing this kind of work, I’m always learning different ways to do it. I’ll definitely put some of your techniques to use one day too👍 Turned out great!!

I really don’t like over restored cars although I can appreciate the effort and craftsmanship that goes into them. What I mean by over restored is, cars that end up better than they were from the factory, with perfect panel gaps, perfect colour sanded and polished paint, parts painted that were never painted at the factory, etc. Having done this kind of work I know how hard it is to stop myself from over restoring and crossing the line into what should be considered custom work. This car is certainly not over restored, in fact it’s quite the opposite, more of a preservation job. Like Matt said, it tells a story and if he covers up what’s there, the story will be silenced forever. Good job matching the paint, I like it.

For such a small section, you could have done what model car builders do. Use different size shapes of salt and coat the car with water, and throw the salt on it on the different color layers. When you wipe it down, the salt falls off leaving the underside paint colors you applied the salt too in a very random pattern without the streaks and all the elbow grease.
