Matt, take a look at adding Alfalfa to your winter rye control for amaranth/pig weed. Hairy Vetch is also supposed to work but HV might turn into a weed itself so I've stayed clear of that one.

I’ve gone away from hairy vetch when following with cotton because it is extremely difficult to place cotton seed shallow in vetch. Cereal rye is the most important part of our mix for weed control due to its allelopathic properties

Why wide rows Matt. Is it just a cotton thing? I’m up here in Indiana and I haven’t seen wide rows in at least 20 years

I don’t recommend taking turkey eggs. I accidentally hit one this year with the strip till and we rescued the eggs. They all hatched fine and we’re growing good. But the baby turkeys get fed by their mom for a few weeks after they are born and without that process the turkeys will die. It’s kind of like a calf that doesn’t get his moms colostrum. All of the turkeys we rescued have died since.

Seed prices ($600!): can you save your own cotton seed if you started with heirloom or off-patent seeds from a seed bank? Do you have or can get a simple cotton gin to collect seeds from small plots? Can the cotton bale buyers keep bales separate and give you your seed back if you were using your own heirloom/hybrid? I'm expanding heirloom corn and soybean seeds at my place as I'm isolated from genetic drift.

If using off patent seed, it would practically be impossible to get any of my own saved seed from the gin due to the nature of the ginning process. Plus the gin owns the seed from the ginning process to cover the costs of ginning the cotton. Also, cotton seed has to go through a delinting process in order to remove all the fiber from in for it to flow in a planter
