I saw Van live for the first time in 1998 in Belfast. I didn't really know much about him, but he was touring on a double bill with my favorite artist, Bob Dylan. They alternated nights headlining and Belfast is Van's hometown, so of course he went second that night. I bought my ticket, hopped on a train in Cork, Ireland (where I was an exchange student), arrived in Belfast, and wandered around looking for the Botanic Gardens (stopping occasionally at news agents for directions). Was about the fifth person in line when they opened the gates. Got a spot on the front rail about 15 feet audience left (stage right). Saw Dylan and his band play a great set, including the rare "This Wheel's on Fire" and the ultra-rare "The Roving Blade". Then Van came out and played for *hours* with a full band--he was not going to leave his hometown without putting on a show! I gained a new and substantial appreciation for him that night. And I even have a couple of photos from just. that. close!
