It's only a 5/6 if it's summoned, if he used the spell to put it in play it is a 5/12 and won't die do whirlwind due to the battlecry not triggering.

He could slam it, but it would die and he wouldn't be able to shield slam it after. He wanted to dump both cards on one minion (and then just didn't anyway and took a million extra turns)
