I rented one in San Diego on June 23, 1966, and I was 19 years old. I street raced stop light to stop light, and when I pulled into my folks driveway the brakes failed. The front caliper piston overheated and no brakes! I was off to USMC boot camp the next day, June 24, 1966, so Hertz towed the car away and waived the $17.00 rental fee. When I returned home from Vietnam I bought a ‘68 Roadrunner for $2,900. My first choice was a’68 Mustang 390/4 speed, but it was about $3,500.

This was a great concept, sadly, some people really abused the cars & canibalized many major components!!! Thanks for the review of this rare beauty!!! 👍👍

rented one back then... Hertz sent out a ‘thank you’ glass.... didn’t like the upward angle to sight road ahead..... so never followed through with a purchase. the story of my life

In 2021, that's $147 a day and $1.48 a mile.... Never forget inflation.

None of the modern Hertz specials hold a candle to the original. Not necessarily because modern Mustangs are always worse or less special than classics, but because the modern Hertz Shelby's are normal GT's with some extra badging, and maybe an exhaust upgrade. If you could actually rent a modern day GT500 or GT350 through Hertz....that would be incredible. Nowadays that's Turo or Driveshare's business.

The actor James Garner drove one of these GT350Hs in the '66 movie Grand Prix. Garner expertly throttled and shifted the GT seamlessly while he streaked through the French countryside in the unique car, with actress Jessica Walter as his scared, half-willing passenger (she was the flirty wife of another driver). Totally worth watching just to see the GT burbling and rumbling, if not the competition racing in the rest of the film.

So...totally random question: were you still required to be 25 years old n order to rent a car back in 1966?? I hear him say that almost at the end and was just curious. Just thought that rule came about several years later.

It does NOT make any sense for a nice old muscle car to cost only $17... 🤯
