I've never thought of playing with the opacity in a long exposure!

Cracking shot. In photoshop, it would be interesting to see how the Select Subject command would have worked with the stacks and cliffs.

Great example of how not to let the wind limit the possibilities! I like some texture left in long exposures as well.

One of the things to do guys and I do it a lot of it long exposures is when you set the camera up try and set it up that the wind is behind you and I know that’s not always possible because the wind comes from all different directions but if you have the wind at your back you can use your body to protect the camera from shaking because of the wind. The other thing to do is and not always suitable is to try to get the tripod a bit lower if you get it around two or 3 feet higher it’s significantly less wind down there.

As an older subscriber I'm afraid photoshop is far beyond my skill set. I can just about do basic edits but the end result looks great .Regards, Tim.

A great location and a great technique to combat the wind that is so often a feature of coastal locations like this. The final image is stunning and, as you said, you can adjust the effect to suit your own preferences.

Thank you for this very useful tip. I have used focus stacking for some time but your tutorial on speed stacking has allowed me to save some images I took in very windy conditions on a cliff top. Much appreciated.

Amazing capture! The editing technique is certainly helpful. Always inspired and in awe of your work. If I may, I have a question regarding ISO on your long exposures. Aside from using the filters, have you ever used the XT-3's extended low base ISO? I only recently learned about such configurations, as I thought that Fujifilm only allowed base 160. Thank you! Cheers!

Great location, Ian. I appreciate the exposure blend tip. I have similar issues with selecting along irregular shorelines and skylines. I'll give your technique a try with some recent images of my own. Thanks!

Very useful vid, Ian. And very timely for me: I was just getting ready to apply the same approach to some of my recent captures for the first time. While I already understood the ideas behind the technique, your example deepened my understanding and provides some some useful implementation tips!

Hey Ian! amazing video once again - always inspiring me to get out of the house. Is there a way to do a color range selection that would have only affected the blues and therefore the sea/sky. May have been a quick way to select the parts you wanted? Just curious as I don't know how to do it myself.

What a great video, especially about being able to have a range of smoothness to the sea by combining two exposures. Just a thought could you have not made a sea selection by using colour range or something similar?

Glad you enjoyed it John, yes there a multiple ways in which to mask but I tend to stick with the brush for most things, just my personal preference though. I would definitely advise experimenting to see which you prefer 👍👍😊

Hello Ian and great weekend to Ya, Do you think The Fuji X-T2 & X-Pro2, plus the X-H1 are all good enough for just starting out doing some semi professional work in many different areas of Photography? I love that 3rd sensor @ 24.3 megapixels... Plus I want all my Fuji Camera bodies made in JAPAN!!! Thanks for your time and energies, Great work as always...

I wonder. In such conditions where the tripod and camera are being shaken/vibrated. Would keeping the cameras IBIS on help. Which is against the perceived wisdom of turning the camera’s stabilisation off when on a tripod. Any thoughts. Thanks Ian.

It will certainly help with a quicker exposure but not so much for a longer one I would say.

May I ask what’s the reason you are using one of those shutter releases from yesteryears? Don’t they still cause camera shake ?
@ian_worth

I use a digital shutter release most of the time unless I forget it, my mechanical one is usually in my bag when I'm shooting film 👍👍
