I was given a pair of Performa 580CD's that had spent decades in a smoke-filled apartment. Now we are trying to restore them! You can see the first two parts of this "Smoke Machine" series here:
Part 2: • Tar-Stained Performa 5...
Part 1: • Restoring The Worst Pe...
In this third part of the series, we do a deep clean of machine 2, and watch as the plastics disintegrate before our eyes.

Nicely done! Came out great considering what you had to work with. I'm surprised the CRT mounting posts had any strength at all, but they seem to hold just fine.

Totally got lucky with that. I think they're maybe just a little bit thicker than the main case posts.. just enough to make a difference!

3:51 I’d remove the Apple badge before soaking it. 6:20 reapplying the isoelectric grease would also be nice. Looking forward for the next videos!! Great job!

Thanks for the tips! It felt like there was a good seal and it didn't need more grease, but you're right, better to reapply fresh next time. And will definitely remove the Apple logo, since it's getting retrobrighted :) Appreciate the feedback!

I just subscribed. This was my first ever computer. Videos I would like to see include recapping both boards and backing up the hard drive to some other medium. Maybe also how to hook up a floppyEMU to this machine. I would love to see someone start making affordable replacement cases for this machine. I think it would be super cool with a transparent rear part of the case but the traditional bezel.

Thanks for subscribing! I think it would so great if someone could make good quality replacement cases! I wonder who would take up the cause?

You could try a dash of WD40 or silicon spary for each plastic posts as a lubricant before unclipping it while disasembling. You know where they are located now 🙂 Maybe this would help to preserve the brittle plastics?

how soft are your plastic tools? maybe you should get a set made out of softer plastic? just a thought
@iiidiy

Hmm, interesting thought! I was going to play with some heat, since the plastic seems to snap before each tab can clear it's hold... so I'm not sure the tool would affect that? But I'm game to try anything - this was a nightmare! Haha

Still looks like crap. If you don’t want to retrobrite it, which is understandable given the condition, I would just paint it matte black. Would look 10x better.

You're entitled to your opinion of what "crap" is... but to me, it's greatly improved, and a nice artifact of how much effort went into my first Mac restoration. I appreciate the constructive idea about painting, thanks! I have another case painting project in my queue, and if that goes well, I might consider revisiting this one at some point. The core problem is taking it apart again, whether it be for retrobrighting or painting, would result in more breakage. The paint route might allow me to hide some patches and structural reinforcement though... so I'll consider it, thanks!

Thanks! And absolutely - you have to be awake and paying attention. I meant to put in a disclaimer about that... It was properly discharged, but I'm always hyper aware too :)
