Question? How is this any different than applying a finger to a garden house to create a stream or using a solid beam vs large hose with no nozzle? I know using smooth bore nozzle you get more volume of water vs pressure. But you get more distance of water with a smooth bore. I guess it there would have to be a way to measure the flow rate and depending on the size exhaust and heat loss slow down gases and loss of pressure. I would think?

Love your thunder torque inserts. I installed a set on my 4in custom straight pipe mufflers and made a huge difference. Adding the inserts gave me a great balance in sound. The inserts noise level is a great middle ground between straight and stock. Highly recommend these especially if u want loud pipes and still be able to hear ur radio.

This is a great video, very well explained. S&S mastered this a long time ago and even tell their customers, leave the removable baffle in the exhaust for tuning, for this exact reason. I fitted a set of S&S Grand National slip-ons to my FXLRST, left the baffles in and it runs beautifully. APE also tune their bikes with a baffle still in for all but the most mental racing tunes for the same issue.

While I am not a new rider, I am new to working on HD's or really any motorcycle that I have owned. I have however built multiple automotive engines for both drag and circle track racing in my many decades ago youth. I completely agree with everything you said and in fact believe it's the misuse of terminology rather than any disagreement with you. We would discuss the issue as "back pressure" rather than "reversion reduction". It is however, "reversion reduction" we were attempting to reduce.

Yeah, there is a lot of confusion in the Harley world about exhaust sound that many want out of their Harley and the loss of power that is experienced when slip-ons with little or no baffleing (no backpressure) are used. Bottom line is that backpressure robs power...it is not dissimilar to adding an extra couple hundreds pounds of weight to the bike. The ideal situation is to have no backpressure and no reversion. Another video that perhaps explains it well is here- kzbin.info/www/bejne/mGPQf2qij5Z2gtk And there is a written report on the subject at this link- www.dkcustomproducts.com/harley-exhaust-myths-and-facts.htm

$50 😂 if it feels great for you...that's absolutely awesome.....but more power it does not give you...drag cars or motorcycles use short exhaust straight pipe...you restrict your exhaust...it's bad for power...if you take the baffles out you have to increase intake pressure....it's simple math.

Good topic here. It really comes down to what you want your bike for. Low to mid range torque for cruising, or high rpm drag racing. As an old street rodder I learned a bit about performance. Back in the day, we would start at the beginning,,,, Good flow carburetor with enough fuel delivery at max rpm, aluminum intake with smooth high flow characteristics and even they had different types depending on peak horse power verses rpm. 3 or 5 angle valve job for smooth flow. Headers for good flow exhaust gas and they had different types, again depending on max horse power at different rpms. open the headers up for racing. Mufflers back on for cruising. In short,,,, decide what rpm verses horse power range you want and decide from there. It's not just baffles or no baffles.

OR, you can have your cake and eat it too...after all, what good is it to have a cake and not be able to eat it? You can use TTI's which do very little (vast majority will not notice) to the top end, and they give a nice bump to cruising power (low and mid range). www.dkcustomproducts.com/thunder-torque-inserts-c57-241.htm

You are correct about not needing back pressure to create more power. The main reason secondary to reverberating backflow reduction, for needing some amount of back pressure, is to reduce valve lash. Excess valve lash can damage your valves, guides and potentially result in combustion chamber damage, if left unchecked long enough.
@DKCustomProducts
@DKCustomProducts 2 жыл бұрын
Harley's don't have valve lash, so this is irrelevant. Most cars & trucks since the 80's have also have zero valve lash. High revving Crotch Rockets may be of a concern with solid lifters, we have done no testing on them, so cannot say if it really makes a real world difference.

I have an exception, and maybe it's an anomaly. When I started putting my 49 EL Panhead together eight years ago, I could not get it to run right running 1 3/4" drag pipes. No matter what I did, timing, carburation, you name it. I've been working on bikes since 1970. I'm a former merchant marine engineer, and I understand engines, but i'm not a professionally trained motorcycle mechanic. I worked part-time in a shop helping my buddy out years ago. I put a set of 4" long, shorty baffles in, and it solved the problem.The bike has run well ever since. I can't explain it, but I know it works.
@DKCustomProducts
@DKCustomProducts 22 күн бұрын
Thanks for sharing! While the baffles did create some backpressure, this is not why you improved performance... In spite of the backpressure increase, the baffles prevented the reversion you were experiencing with the wide open drag pipes. Refer to the 1:50 point in the video for a very detailed explanation on reversion and how it robs power. The Thunder Torque Inserts™ are the best of what a baffle can be for these bikes... This style baffle prevents reversion, increases exhaust gas velocity, all while creating virtually no backpressure. DS www.dkcustomproducts.com/thunder-torque-inserts-c57-346.htm

Great video guys. Sure makes sense on how you explained it and I am one of those people who misunderstood back pressure. I just put on some CFR megaphone style mufflers but kept my stock headers. Are the headers enough to stop or slow down reversion? or would a torque insert still be beneficial? I don't see a cool way to add one on these mufflers and would be cautious about drilling into 800 dollar mufflers I just bought.
@DKCustomProducts
@DKCustomProducts 3 жыл бұрын
You can put the TTI's in the header and get some benefit, but will still have reversion slowing down the exhaust gas velocity in the mufflers....so it is of some benefit, but not as much as putting it at the tail end of the slip ons.
@Shastar271828
@Shastar271828 2 жыл бұрын
@@DKCustomProducts Should a megaphone still have a reversion occurring? Would have thought that a megaphone style pipe bell matches the impedance pretty well... perhaps only in some frequency range, and an exhaust pulse is still an impulse that contains all frequencies...
@DKCustomProducts
@DKCustomProducts 2 жыл бұрын
@@Shastar271828 Yes, when ever there is an atmospheric change (larger or smaller causes that) there will be reversion. With a megaphone opening it will be a little less severe (less negative impact) but it is most definitely still there.

OMG!!! Just wanted to let you know what happened after watching your video. I’ve had thunder torques for a few years now and I absolutely love the boost they give me. I did fix a small clamp leak but it still kept vibrating. A lot depends on how much overlap your cam/s have and where they're timed. You can make an engine run strong with a fairly restrictive exhaust if the cam timing will allow it and then if that engine has the exhaust opened up it'll lose power because it's over-scavenging. Same goes for an engine with open exhaust and cams that work well with little to no back pressure and then if you choke it with a restrictive exhaust it'll kill the power. The exhaust has to work with the cam timing which is why an adjustable exhaust is great for tuning. SuperTrapp types with removable discs that you can add or remove to change the exhaust sound and pressure work well. It's easier to tune the exhaust than change the cams to find a happy balance.
@DKCustomProducts
@DKCustomProducts 8 күн бұрын
While this video was primarily made for OEM cammed bike (the majority of HD's out there are running the OEM cams), the principle is the same. Agree 100% with you, the exhaust needs to match up with all the other engine components, including the cam, to get the best results. The SuperTrapp disc style exhaust is an excellent way to do that, as are the Thunder Torque Inserts™. They both give adjustability, and the primary goal and result of them both is the reduction of reversion to speed up exhaust gas velocity, facilitating a better intake charge. Yes, that is very simplified, but those are the highpoints. Thanks for your comment. 👍😎👍 KP

That's the first time I've heard it called reversion, I've been in the auto, truck, marine, and equipment repair industry for 26 years i have held ase technician credentials in about every area with the exception of engine management, I didn't pursue the Master cert as it didn't make a difference to my employer. Older techs used to call it back pressure or blowback ....not" blow by"... Which is when oil gets past the rings and gets into the intake system. Cool word I'm definitely going to remember that one.... Your absolutely correct about back pressure and reversion.... Been telling people that for years, you don't need back pressure..a friend of mine with a shovel head and full drag pipes was told to put a 1/2 bolt with lock washer in the bottom of the pipe about 2-3 inches from the tip .... Hey guys, Found you discussion on back pressure informative. Makes sense. Most of the examples show the exhaust slip-on mufflers with first removing the inner baffle and packing then installing the torque plates. I have V&H Monster ovals on my 09 HD Ultra. I've looked for a way to remove the inner baffles and can't find a method. Do I NEED to remove these to install & benefit from your torque plates?

Yeah, it is amazing how many folks perpetuate the myth of needing backpressure. Not sure what 4" pipe you got, or what baffle is in it, but for power and best running, using a Thunder Torque Insert™ in them will stop the reversion and make for a better running engine...stock & all the way up to Stage IV.

So, we never spoke of how a cad converter plays into this. On an M8 motor, what is the ideal set up? Header with or without the converter? Slip on mufflers with or without baffle? Tell me the set up you would run. Great video!
@DKCustomProducts
@DKCustomProducts 3 жыл бұрын
The converter plays very little role in backpressure or reversion....but it would be slightly better without it, and would have the addes benefit of reducing felt heat. No baffles with TTI to stop the reversion. It will be louder. If louder is not your preference then the supertrapp style mufflers (very quiet) also do a great job of reducing reversion without a big increase in backpressure.

Exhaust gas velocity is the key. And it all starts at the exhaust valve. On a 4 stroke you want the spent gasses moving through the exhaust valve as quickly as possible. If they can be evacuated fast enough this provides somewhat of a vacuum effect in the cylinder. This vacuum helps to bring in air/fuel on the next stroke, the intake stroke. So anything that impedes exhaust gas velocity (such as back pressure) for whatever reason is going to hinder the cylinder from getting a full charge of air/fuel. Less air and fuel in the cylinder guess what, less power. That's why a motor is in essence an air pump. It's all about getting as much as possible through it. PS, I'm calling TODAY to order a set of Thunder Torque Inserts. 👍✌

If I can I'd like to propose what I think might be a big improvement in your 'lolypop'. Make them shaped like a hollowed out golf ball with a pointed nipple on the outside center of the half sphere. Round over the outside edge. And make it out of a low heat conductive material like aluminum. If my understanding of volumetric efficiency is correct, this would greatly increase the velocity of the exhaust & decrease back pressure. Just a thought.

I have argued with the best about this..... I'm running a 93" Shovelhead with 2 in drag pipes... I've got the carb and gearing dialed in about 135 mph.... I'm at about 4,500 elevation and I need to suck down a lot of air with little gas.... Pulling air in I need to push it out without causing harmonics reversion in the drag pipes.... It really does take a fine tune to make it run right. 2 in drag pipes (With out baffles) is what got Harley Davidson the world speed record for over 18 years.

We don't really care about HP. On a Harley, up to 5225 RPM, what is felt is torque. Here is a video about that- kzbin.info/www/bejne/eoDbq4Fup5hohZY Since torque is what the majority of Harley riders like to feel when they twist the throttle, the TTI's were designed to get the most torque possible out of the exhaust, by increasing exhaust gas velocity, resulting in a fuller fresh charge for the combustion strokes.

It would be interesting to see a dyno run with exhaust and a run with exhaust removed side by side. I have an older friend who did a lot of dirt track racing, he would build an engine and install it, paint the pipes with a spray can, then go run the hell out of it for 15 or 20 minutes. Where the paint quit burning, he would cut the pipe off. Said that was all the pipe he needed. I can't say that I totally agree with you or that I disagree, my opinion is that this could be the start of a series of videos that could last for years. When you change the exhaust, bigger leg pipes, more or less restrictive mufflers, etc., you also need to change jetting because the amount of gasses going out the pipe changes the amount of air and fuel coming in. Are you going to turn this video into a science project? I would watch more.

I believe that its often called scavenging, the reason that valve opening overlap adds power is the same concept relating to exhaust piping and the back pressure concepts. So first off, I believe that back pressure is a miss used term. the configuration of an exhaust pipe, the same way an intake effects the power curve has to to with the flow and resonance of the plumbing. these concepts can be easily discussed with examples, take any carbureted engine, if you increase the carb inlet dia you increase the peak power potential of that engine but the low end torque/power suffers, this is because a smaller dia carb is more efficient at flowing air at a lower volume aka lower engine revs than a large dia carb is. a small dia carb struggles to flow large quantities at high velocity or when the engine is at high revs this is a no brainer, this example illustrates some of the flow characteristics of engine plumbing, a similar thing happens with the exhaust as related to achieving efficiency depending on the rate or velocity of the exhaust flow, now i exceed my expertise quickly here, for both the exhaust dia and length, longer length or smaller dia typically constitutes a better low flow efficiency and thus better low end power output, and a shorter length exhaust or larger dia exhaust seems to typically decrease low end power suggesting an efficiency decrease at lower flow conditions but produces more power higher up the rev range where more flow is permitted by the more open exhaust system, this is all true in theory, in actual application however it takes more math or experimentation than I have resources for to calculate exactly the best intake/exhaust/valve cam/fuel mapping configurations for max power. there are many trick that can help the situation, Buell Xb12 motorcycles had an exhaust valve to allow switching between a long exhaust length and a shorter one look it up, i had a 2016 Suzuki GSX-S1000 that had an exhaust valve for a similar reason. Short answer: Its complicated!
@DKCustomProducts
@DKCustomProducts 3 жыл бұрын
There is no doubt that exhaust is complicated....no way to address the entire subject in one video. ALSO, the vast majority of Harley owners are not interested in the endless details. There is one main component, that is easily addressed, regarding getting more power out of our Harley's... Increase exhaust gas velocity. This is easily addressed by reducing backpressure and reversion....something every Harley owner can do for less than $75

Your tune will be fine. It may pop a little but this is not indicative of an issue with the tune, just the nature of a free flowing exhaust. You may want to look at getting some thunder torques for your exhaust to help with low to mid range torque, sound and decel pop. You can see a video on the thunder torques at this link - kzbin.info/www/bejne/mGPQf2qij5Z2gtk Thank you for commenting! 😎

I have tab 50 cal exhaust. Do you think I would be ok pulling the baffles and putting the tab torque cones in. Would I keep the power
@DKCustomProducts
@DKCustomProducts 10 ай бұрын
You can certainly do that. What you will be left with is a wide open, roughly 4" diameter slip-on. Very similar to a baffle-less OEM exhaust as seen here .... kzbin.info/www/bejne/enzEkpp9jd2IsMk go with these 258 series TTI - www.dkcustomproducts.com/thunder-torque-inserts-258-model-family-dk-tti-258.htm I think you will be pleasantly surprised and happy with your low - mid range torque increase.

Instead of making it I’m going to use a W258 so how far back if I drill a hole into the 2.5” baffle from a 2:1 D&D Billet Cat With a Big Bore Baffle. I’m debating keep baffle and do below with the Thunder Torque vs no baffle but thinking of 45° versus flat open over hole covering it as shown in your videos what’s your take on it. Also thinking of taking all the wrap off of it there’s two wraps the thick ones and a finer one not sure taking both off or just the one thicker one. Enjoying a whole about 1 inch in on the baffle and And installing the W258 In probably 45° angle with the back facing upwards angle. Your thoughts STEP 1: We recommend purchasing a 1/4"x1" thumb screw which can readily purchased at any local hardware store for about $ 0.50 a piece. They work great. The "football" shaped head on the screws measure approximately 3/4" x 1/2" so they have about the same surface area as the 3/4" O.D. washer because of the lack of the hole. And they do not require any fabrication. Alternatively you can take a 3/4" outside diameter washer and weld it to the top of a 3/4" x 1/4" bolt. STEP 2: Drill a 1/4" hole about 1" inside your head pipe where your aftermarket exhaust slip on. STEP 3: Take the tunable baffle and place a 1/4" nut and a lock washer (away from the large washer). Now insert your tunable baffle into the exhaust pipe like the example below. You can tune the baffle by changing the angle of the thumbscrew or washer to the exhaust pipe. For maximum torque, the washer will be at 90 degree angle to the pipe. For maximum horsepower the washer will be parallel to the pipe. In a study given to Bike Tech by Gene P. Three runs were done. Run 5 was done with the thumbscrew 90 degrees to the pipe or perpendicular, Run 6 was done at a 45 degree angle and Run 7 was done parallel to the pipe. Run 5: Had the lowest horsepower, but the 2500-4000 RPM power was the highest. This is the RPM band that most riders spend their time riding. Run 6: Improves the 3000-4000 RPM horsepower drop over run 7 without any significant drop in maximum power. Run 7: Makes the most power, but has a huge hole in the power band just above 3000 RPMs. Since the thumbscrew is parallel to the pipe in this case, it has a very small profile and would be very similar to it not being there at all. The information for this article was gathered from nightrider.com's Bike Tech.

Iso many Harley mags said you have to have back pressure, So I took my exhaust off and put forcing cones in them I could not hear feel see any difference so I took them out my wife demands Fishtails I agree I did not have access to a dyne back then ? But with the newer Bike she is running a 2 into one full exhaust with no baffle? I do believe in running the breather bolts into a tee and chrome Gas Filter.

Nor quite following what you are saying...but it seems like you have a 2-1 exhaust with no baffle. Put a TTI in there and you will enjoy even more low and mid range torque.

That's like harley told me external breathers were bad for harleys and I am one of the first to put one on my streetbob and after installing I put it out on the internet and it exploded. They are everywhere and everybody is making their version. So use your own judgment and knowledge. My dad taught us that an engine needs three things to make power clean cool air good Clean fuel and good spark. BOOM. My bob does better than ever. Performance mileage and wear and tear on my drive train.its a no brainer to think for myself knowing all the professionals like to listen to the manufacturers. They treat you like a mushroom. Feed you shit and watch you grow. Into one of them. Think for yourself and make informed decisions. It will never fail you

I would have to agree with you, after much research I fitted my Road King with an external breather, no more oily fumes going into the combustion chamber, just air, fuel and spark. Is there a huge difference in performance ? No, not that I can feel, but it sure wont hurt your motor, just puts less carbon deposits into it. You dont need expensive air cleaners and stuff, either, because your motor will only flow as much air as it is able to in its current configuration, so just get a high flow element and save your bucks... My 2 cents worth, anyhow.

Do you need to leave the baffle installed and put the proper thunder torque insert in the baffle or take the baffle out and use a larger proper thunder torque incert
@DKCustomProducts
@DKCustomProducts 2 жыл бұрын
You will get the most power by removing the baffle and using the proper size TTI. However, it will be much louder. If it is stock exhaust, the TTI's do no good with the baffle in. If it is aftermarket exhaust, with a straight thru baffle, If you leave the baffle in, and use the appropriate size TTI you will get a boost in power, just not quite as much...and it will not make it louder, just a bit deeper sounding than it is with just the baffle.

I ordered the TTIs and EBS for my stock still under warranty street Bob. I removed the baffles and put in the TTIs in the stock pipes and added the EBS to the stock air cleaner. Should I still install a crank case breather(dip stick)?
@DKCustomProducts
@DKCustomProducts 2 күн бұрын
Awesome! I hope you are enjoying the benefits of having the parts installed. Vented dipsticks and transmission cover vents do NOT take the place of external breather systems. There is still hot, oily, oxygen depleted air being fed into the intake. The folks that sell vented dipsticks and trans cover vents, have it right in their product description that they do not prevent all that crap from going into your intake. Here is a copy and paste from the Trask website- "This will reduce the oil exiting from the head breathers..." Even if there is no trace of oil in the intake, there is still hot, oxygen depleted air going into the combustion chambers, making the engine run hotter, and not as strong because of the lower oxygen content. IF you have an older M8, with the older oil pump and you are concerned about sumping...OR, IF you have a built engine with higher compression, then it may be beneficial to do an EBS And a vented dipstick or trans cover vent. Here is a video that shows more useful information on External Breather Systems- kzbin.info/www/bejne/e5enlnmQl9GAmc0 Please feel free to contact for any questions; Support@DKCustomProducts.com 662-252-8828 Thank you for your business and for commenting! I think people are being confused by the “Plug” in a quiet Baffle. We still have open and perforated “Baffles”, the best being stage spiral type in my opinion, that are still open and can be seen through.

Whats the optimum size baffle for a built sportster? I have a s&s superstreet 2-1 it has a 1.75 inch reducer at the end of the muffler. Will going to a 2 inch reducer give me more power?
@DKCustomProducts
@DKCustomProducts Жыл бұрын
The optimum is no baffle or reducer. So if you do have to use one for some reason, the larger the better. Here is a video that you may find very interesting regarding exhaust sizing and the relationship between that and power generated. kzbin.info/www/bejne/ameapamDbadrkJo

@DKCustomProducts

It may reduce it a bit. Popping is all about the AFR in the exhaust, and with the TTI's it does change the air flow in the exhaust, so it can have an effect.

I agree back pressure is not good. I do think baffles are good. I would rather sacrifice some power and have a quiet motorcycle.I think there's just as big a myth that says you have to have a loud motorcycle to make horsepower. There are plenty of stock motorcycles making well over 100 hp that are quiet.
@DKCustomProducts
@DKCustomProducts 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the comment, you bring up some really good points.👍 Backpressure robs power. This is indisputable. Using TTI's in an open pipe is annoying loud for some folks this is indisputable. The myth that loud pipes make more power is indisputable. The SuperTrapp style mufflers are quiet AND reduce backpressure and reversion, resulting in faster exhaust gas velocity...which means more power. Most bikes that are quiet, making over 100 hp would make even more with either of the above two set ups.
