Welcome back, boating, RV and Van Life enthusiasts! Today, we're diving deep into the world of satellite internet with a head-to-head comparison between two cutting-edge technologies: Starlink High Performance and Generation 3 Flat Dish. We'll be examining their upload and download speeds, latency, waterproof rating, and outage reliability. Let's get started!
First up, let's talk speed. Starlink High Performance boasts lightning-fast upload and download speeds, thanks to its advanced satellite constellation and ground infrastructure. With speeds averaging 12-30 Mbps for uploads and 200 Mbps downloads, users can enjoy seamless streaming, gaming, and productivity without missing a beat.
On the other hand, Generation 3 Flat Dish also offers impressive speeds, clocking in at an average of averaging 12-30 Mbps for uploads and 200 Mbps downloads!
Latency, or the time it takes for data to travel from a user's device to the internet and back, is crucial for activities like online gaming and video calls. Starlink High Performance shines in this department, with low latency averaging around 40 milliseconds, rivaling traditional broadband connections.
Meanwhile, Generation 3 Flat Dish also offers competitive latency, averaging around 40 milliseconds!
When it comes to durability, both Starlink High Performance and Generation 3 Flat Dish are built to withstand the elements with an IP57 rating. Starlink's dish features a robust design with a high waterproof rating, ensuring reliable operation even in adverse weather conditions.
Testing the Starlink High Performance, Generation 3 Flat Dish boasts a durable construction and impressive waterproof rating of IP67, providing peace of mind for users in extreme water and dust exposed conditions.
Finally, let's talk about outage reliability. Starlink High Performance leverages its vast satellite network to minimize downtime, offering a reliable connection even in rural or remote areas where traditional internet services may struggle to reach. It averages 7 less than 1 second outages per day, with no obstructions.
Generation 3 Flat Dish also prioritizes outage reliability, with built-in redundancy and failover mechanisms to ensure continuous connectivity, even during network disruptions. It averages 10 less than 1 second outages per day, with no obstructions. While 42% more outages than the High Performance Starlink, the Generation 3 flat dish is an extremely dependable dish.
And there you have it, folks! While both Starlink High Performance and Generation 3 Flat Dish offer impressive performance and reliability, each has its own unique strengths. Whether you prioritize blazing-fast speeds or rugged durability, there's a satellite internet solution to meet your needs. Thanks for watching, and until next time, stay connected!

Good evaluation, it allowed for an apples to apples comparison.

Thanks for reviews on this subject- did buy and install a gen 3 which followed your results for speed and connectivity. On a short trip to Desolation it was a game changer for weather voice calling and other conveniences. Also dislike powder coated aluminum and used the TRIO Flat-mount pole mount which works great and gives a slight tilt. It is installed on low profile 5 inch 316 mount on top of pilot house. I did this as I was worried about windage I also have run it with a custom canvas cover over it (Snow-melt feature turned off) and it seems fine and is further “marinized”against flying salt spray from any angle.

Great review. How did you mount your trio gen 3 on the hard top? Did you use the magnets with the fhb tape? It looks that way on your video.

Great and informative video. Thank you. Yes, on a Pep link video, fin stabilizers and anything else you can think of. You are on a roll with ideas. I watch and learn so much from your videos. You both do such a great job. again, thank you. Is that backdrop Roche Harbor??? Its opening boating season this weekend there. I'm in So CA.

That is Roche Harbor! Great eye! It is indeed Opening Day weekend. Both the Woman and Men’s Husky teams won the Windermere Cup. As usual, we got our fair share of rain. 🌧️ Enjoy the sun in SoCal!

Gosh I’m so surprised I thought for the price difference the high performance dish would 2x speeds

Jon and Karlynn Elliott, this video, like all your episodes, is very well done. Always well thought out, presented, good videography and editing. The HP vs Gen 3 was very interesting. I wonder if the HP would outperform when offshore. Have you made a long offshore passage into areas with less dense coverage? Got any feeling or thoughts? A video on your pepwave setup would be fantastic. How you are bonding two starlinks together and switching to cellular would make a very interesting video. Keep up the great work. I realize how much time and efforts go into a video.

SpaceX's Starlink satellites have an areal number density of 0.005 to 0.01 objects per square degree at airmass less than 2 in the lower part of Earth's orbit, below 600 km. The density is dependent on latitude. While this data is a bit dated, the latitude density is always the same for LEO satellite. All that said, I’d be willing to bet that when a boat pitches and rolls at sea, the higher field of view of the HP, really separates it from the narrower field of view of the Standard, and the HP has significantly lower dropouts at crappy sea states. Since we are now stabilized, roll isn’t as noticeable of a variable for us.

Great video! I have a refurbished gen 3 on its way. I can’t wait. You confirmed that I made the right choice. Especially for $399.

Thanks for providing your conclusion early on in the video as at this time I am not considering Starlink, but I want to stay generally up to date. If and when, I'll look at the follow-on details in your video. I also have to say that I've learned the quality of your analysis and thus trust what you say.

Thank you for the feedback Rob! We would definitely put wi-fi as a top five addition to any boat over 40’ (not necessarily Starlink). So many systems are now dependent for advanced functionality on having internet access and keeping tabs on the boat remotely adds untold piece of mind. Have a great week!

@@ElliYacht1 I fully agree. I use TMobile Home Internet on the boat and have been able to cruise with few signal drops. I can also remotely access the boat, see my cameras and security, etc. If the boat was our home or we decided to snap a chalk-string and head to Hawaii, I'd get Starlink.

Another informative video, thanks! But you don't touch on the major difference between the two, the "in motion" limitation -- the HP doesn't cut you off if you're traveling above 10mph.

@ElliYacht1 Ай бұрын
Good news.. The Gen4 was just certified by the FCC as approved for in motion. The Roam plan supports speed over 8mph, when Priority Mode is selected ($2per GB). facebook.com/share/p/aEBNMtb8aJUvS8SM/?mibextid=K35XfP

Love your no BS cut to the chase approach. Would also like to know which service plan you are using. I have heard all sorts of things.

@ElliYacht1 Ай бұрын
We use the Roam plan. It’s $150 per month and can be ‘paused’, when not used. It supports ‘in motion’ up til 8 mph and then cuts out. If you need in motion over 8 mph or high priority speed in a congested area, you can select high priority in the app for $2 per GB. You can toggle it off when you are done. Most flexible plan for boaters IMHO.

IPX doesn't matter. It's the SEVEN in IP67 that matters. If they're both SEVEN, then they can both handle Ingress of water in harmful quantity shall not be possible when the enclosure is immersed in water under defined conditions of pressure and time (up to 1 meter (3 ft 3 in) of submersion). But I just looked it up, the high performance flat antenna is rated IP56. Water projected in powerful jets (12.5 mm (0.49 in)) against the enclosure from any direction shall have no harmful effects. That sucks. The whole point of getting that one was FOR THE BOAT. Boats often get a wave over the deck. Well...SPIT! :-( However, the HPflat supposedly tracks better while in boat motion, pitching, yawing, rolling, etc. and is ostensibly the ONLY one that will work offshore.
