Looks like you’ve got a balsa core deck. Would be a good idea to oversize the hole, fill with epoxy and then drill out to suit bolt diameter. When the sikaflex fails, water will get into your core.

Good eye and recommendation. Two seasons ago, we did just that. The only add was, we put in a stainless sleeve so the anchor chain didn’t eventually work through the epoxy. It wouldn’t be necessary for most folks that rarely anchor out. However, we’re on the hook 50+ days a year.

I'm sure you figured it out by now lol but these style pumps do a test every few mins to check the water level then turns on.. It doesn't work like a old style float pump.

Bad boat smell is usually water in the bilges. Regular smell is usually just condensation in lots of different spots, many of which you can't possibly reach or inspect. So dehumidify. I set my dehumidifier at 50%. Outside it might be 60% inside it's still 55% -- if the dehumidifier is running and the boat is closed up. Open a few hatches and it always matches the outside. The smell is mildew. I use Chlorine Dioxide ( ClO2). It's basically poison gas, exactly like WWI. Easy to use but potentially dangerous. Learn how to use it, get a full face respirator with the correct cartridge, set it up, drop the tablets in the water and get out. It can be several hours, but I usually give it over night. Works great. I even set fabrics and black paper right next to the buckets when I first experimented in my garage. No fading. It breaks down into salt so clean up is easy. The gas leaves no residue on anything. For my clothes on board I first bought some plastic bins at Target. That cabinet was a bit stinky until I used the CLO2. So I made some cheap white vinyl dry bags that go over the bins. Works great, keeps excess humidity and stink out of my clothes. I'd recommend dry bags for all fabrics on board. DIY is fine, they don't have to be tough backpacking drybags, Easy to make, use silicone caulking thinned with paint thinner or naptha to paint the seams. I was on a boat that went through 5 days of dense fog. The only HVAC on board were a couple of weak diesel heaters and fans. Everything was streaming water, nothing would dry, all my clothes in the tight cubby got mildewed and stinky. You need AC or heat to get rid of that level of moisture. On my Hunter there's a small hatch right above the stove. I had a spare window that size that I used as a tracing pattern to cut out some 1/4" luan plywood to fit all the tabs. I got a cheap fan and attached that at an angle to the plywood. I thought I'd have to make some kind of a latch or retainer to hold it in. Nope works great. I did add a couple pieces of wood as 'handles' for inserting it. All gas stove of any type need to be vented. It's not healthy. Works great. If you can't vent above the stove, put a fan vent as close as you can.

Thanks for this, from a fellow Navigator owner. I've been looking at it. I did talk to a surveyor about it, and he said one of the things needed is a solid hull. It can't be a cored hull because it won't carry the ultrasound past a balsa cored hull , like some of the Cruisers Inc. boats, I was told. Love the channel. You guys are spot on with some of the endemic issues, like the head fans! Safe sailing!

I have been very curious about these. Thank you for making this awesome independent review. I long since thought these were a type of snake oil. I probably don’t need one since I keep my boat in the freshwater. But if I ever decide to do some extended travel in saltwater, I would definitely consider these now.

Off topic here. You’ve been living onboard for a bit now. Curious if would you do it now that you’ve had some experience? Is there anything you miss from a land home? Is there anything you’d change? We were looking at doing the same back when you made your move then changed our mind. Now we’re reconsidering it again.

Sounds great. So if I understand you correctly you have 2 transducers in the bow area, 2 on the hull in the ER and 2 on the engines, so a total of 6 ? What kind of wiring do you need to extend it all the way to the bow ? And maybe a strange question, but does the sound have any effect on animals ? We have dogs onboard and they might be able to hear the sound, don't want to scare or annoy them all day long.

My experience system works for hull but not so well for bow/stern thrusters or keel. The transducer on the thrusters were not effective as the gear oil and gears absorbed too much of the sound. On my boat the keel is too much mass for the sound waves to prevent growth. Here is a video review that I did, there is a link to an update. Plan to do another update in a few weeks. kzbin.info/www/bejne/b4Tcl2aPpr5qh7csi=_LNXSxGRRPutuOXv

I would assume with a good bottom paint and no ultrasound system your hull would look the same because you have cleaned it 5 times. The purpose of these expensive gadgets and coatings like copper coat are that you dont have to clean it. Our hull has less growth than the boat in front of us who has copper coat and neither of us clean the hull and both use the boats about the same amount. Coppercoat is a waste of money in my opinion and the ultrasonic system sending constant vibration thru everything is not something i would want on my boat, i think it could produce failures in parts/systems that would not normally fail.
@ElliYacht1
@ElliYacht1 16 күн бұрын
The rudders were the components that were protected in that test. Not the hull. The rudders were not cleaned. That said, if anyone has doubts about the ultrasonic system, I’d recommend against it. However, claiming that a 20kHz to 45kHz pulse would break your mechanicals or electrical is a reach. If anything it would reduce lubrication sludge or fuel deposits in mechanicals. Think ultrasonic cleaning.

6’ away. I will note these transducers just send out an ultrasonic pulse to the hull/rudder/running gear that microorganisms don’t care for. Kinda like Oprah music at the 7/11 keeping the kids away. It doesn’t send a focused signal like a depth sounder so, I wouldn’t expect (educated guess) that the two would interfere with each other.

As a merchant mariner I'm truly shocked at just how little equipment and regulations there are when it comes to uninspected vessels. Even on the the little tug I work on we are required to have an incredible amount of stuff from full firefightering suits and Scott packs, to line throwing devices. The list of required safety equipment is very extensive and even the annual CG inspections are all day affairs. Every 2 years drydock inspections are required and they are major inspections. So I guess what I'm trying to say is consider yourself lucky that you aren't held to inspected vessel standards!
