One thing I'm learned during my sports career is that you have to arrive early for your event. How early? One day for each hour time difference. For example if the time difference between US and Italy is 8 hours, you plan your arrival 8 days in advance. This will guarantee that you are not jet lagged and will have an optimal performance. Of course only people who are doing sports for living can afford that.
