It is unfortunate that happened but thank you for your efforts, trying to remember & explaining what he was saying at that time. I understand what Mr. Merv was trying to say about extensions of arms, legs & torso & flexibility of spine & that is why when Jimin had first came to BigHit as trainee, he had a lot of difficulties adjusting his muscle memory from contemporary dance movements to Kpop/Hiphop dance movements. Pls, next time, would you asked Merv to explain about different of muscles usages & muscle memory between contemporary dance to Kpop/Hiphop dance? Also that video of young Jimin doing contemporary dance was taken when he was 1st year of high school(15 years old), which was about 1 year after he has started to learn contemporary dance & in my opinion it shows how remarkably gifted & dedicated Jimin is as a dancer that he has mastered that much contemporary skills & built that much dancer’s physics in such short periods of times & I think that is why all of his high school dance teachers were so against Jimin auditioning to become kpop idol instead of choosing to become a classical/contemporary dancer. Anyway, may I suggest you to show him this combine performance video posted by HYBE < I need you + I’m fine - kzbin.info/www/bejne/qmTSpWiebshrg6s > which shows BTS’s full performance more clearly just like dance practice video.

Since Mr. Merv has pointed out about Jimin’s wrist, arms & legs are not extended fully & most fans in this comment section has only talked about Jimin’s contemporary dance skills, as a Korean, I am going to explain more detail of what other genres of dance skills that Jimin is utilizing in his dance movements to make his own unique dance style. The reason that Jimin’s wrists, arms & legs are not fully extended is because he is not just using contemporary dance technique but he is also using Korean traditional dance techniques that he has learned while studying in BuSan high school of Art as well as his Hiphop(Popping & Locking) techniques. For example, Jimin’s MMA ‘I need you’ dance performance is not only contemporary dance but it is also a modern interpretation of Korean traditional dance call ‘SalPuRi(살풀이)’. < SalPuRi, the Korean traditional dance - kzbin.info/www/bejne/q3iuk4uXnJVkfMU > And if you watch this video & many other Korean traditional dance performances, you would notice the similarities between many of Jimin’s dance movements & those of Korean traditional dancer’s movements, especially his hands, wrists, arms & shoulders movements.(also the way he some times raise tip of his foot, like in his solo dance in ‘Black Swan’ which is very typical Korean dance movements.) It is because Jimin is also combining a lot of Korean traditional dance techniques in his dance as well. For Contemporary/classical dance techniques, most of the time, the dancer’s arms, legs & torso are extended fully to create beautiful posture of body & dance lines in various discipline movements, but in Korean traditional dance, it is more about expressing & describing emotions through every parts of limbs with fluidity, water(like ocean wave)like movements & every movements are done with dancer’s breathe while using special breathing techniques call ‘DeulSoom(들숨: In hailing)& NalSoom(날숨: exhaling)’. Wrist & Arm movements dominate the Korean traditional dance, while they naturally grow from breathing, which in Korean philosophy is linked with spiritual energy (ki). Thus the focal point is on the chest and lung area, while the dance appears as a physical manifestation of a deep, personal emotion. Here is a video of Korean traditional dance lesson for basic Arm movements with breathing technique < kzbin.info/www/bejne/hX7daGSroLV-oLc > & dancers major in Korean traditional dance reacting to Jimin’s dance performances < kzbin.info/www/bejne/q6CzlI2hl7Boi80 > And that ‘Wrong’ jump in ‘I need You’ performance that Merv has pointed out is actually a dance technique which is based on Korean traditional dance movement that become a Korean B-boy/Hiphop/Modern dance technique call ‘Ja-Ban(자반)’! < ‘JaBan’ dance movement in Korean traditional dance ‘SaMoolNolyee’ - kzbin.info/www/bejne/bILcZ4ingb-GbJI > < learning’JaBan’ movement w/ Korean dance instructor - kzbin.info/www/bejne/gZnElYSXa7uHqZI > If we remember BTS’s 2018 MMA ‘Idol’ performance with spectacular intro, this particular jump movements was shown in that intro of Korean traditional performance to show fans & audiences that some parts of BTS’s ‘Idol’ choreography are actually based on ‘SaMoolNolYee’ dance movements, one of the well known Korean traditional dance.

This is so educational, and I think it adds so much to what we know and what we don’t know. This is all excellent info!!! Thank you! I will also like to add, not all contemporary actually uses the pointed foot exclusively. I trained in contemporary also (in Britain) and even though some of the more technically advanced styles like Graham and Cunningham will have divisive point or flex foot, many more somatic and release styles will prefer a more relaxed approach. Same with wrists and hands.

@@hjban2977 exactly! I think what people may not realise that in any one dance style there is more than just one technique. Like I’m trained in Graham, Cunningham and release but not say Horton. As a Western dancer, I’m interested how similar or different contemporary is in the East. It defiantly will have been merging in the last 50 years due to media. I’ve watched Jimin’s old contemporary videos and he does look like a lot of the traditional technique I’ve grown up with but I found it VERY interesting that when BTS reacted to their Black Swan video, with the other dance company, that Jimin did not recognise who the person was quoted at the beginning. Martha Graham is one of the biggest icons in Contemporary dance and someone who studied contemporary over here would at least know her name. Made me so curious to know what techniques were studied and who was I missing out on!!
@KaityJanee
@KaityJanee 2 жыл бұрын
I think it’s also important to remember that Jimin had to give up a lot of the contemporary technicalities to his dancing in order to blend well with the group since BTS’ choreography majorly consists of hip-hop movements. And he’s spoken about how difficult it was for him to unlearn that style and re-learn hip-hop dance. However, I think it’s really amazing that they still give Jimin room to have solos where he can refer back to his previous contemporary training.

@@Koko3op Yes, I agree that it's different when Jimin has to work with the other members as they are not trained and yet it needs to look cohesive. Jungkook did a fantastic job, but I'm sure Jimin had to adjust himself in his performance since JK is not formally trained. Also, the comments about the clothing being restrictive and I think the timing of the MV could be factors. Jimin also has to practice the choreo of the other dances and he is not able to practice contemporary full time. I have heard other dancers say that it's a small percentage of dancers who can merge hip hop and contemporary and go back and forth as it uses different techniques. So glad you did not give up in showing how our Jimin shines. I think he's one of a kind!

And even the things that they don't have a contemporary/ modern choreographer that follows when, even if good the director choreographer that follows when know just idol hip- hop. Jimin just did two years of contemporary and stopped doing it whe debuted to completely making his own way in bts choreographys. Of course he is carrying some of things he did previously not just contemporary but even material arts or popping and for moves with technique like leg extensions he even needs another eye that knows about those things to correct him because you could see that in his years of school he had it.is clear and understanding that he lost some of his flexibility but i am very impressed that he was so good in just two years of school or that he has some of technique evn 8 years later without working in those moves

Pretty sure why jimin didn’t extend his back and lifted his leg higher was because of the water and the shoes their wearing. If he fully extended, the force from the kick over might cause him to slip and hurt himself and jungkook in the process!! You have to sacrifice some momentum when water is in the picture because your shoes can’t get the friction it needs.

I appreciate the fact that he is giving a honest reaction but to the people in the comments, I THINK he is giving his analysis based on a contemporary dancer point of view wich of course it's ok BUT we know Jimin isn't just a contemporary dancer, he's one of the most versatile dancers of the industry and he also uses his skills in various martial arts in his dancing. When he says something Jimin did in his dance is "wrong" it's wrong based in the contemporary stand of point, if a dancer wants to judge Jimin's way of dance fairly he should take in count all Jimin's background and remember that just because in some style of dance that's wrong in the other it's not and Jimin mastered both. Jimin's versatility it's what makes him so special and the best in the eyes of many people, he isn't just a box he's the whole package and I wish you all could have the eyes to see it because it's beautiful

Even RM credited him with being what started everything. It took all 7 of these multi talented men to get to where they are but Jimin lit the match and as a fan who was here from 2016 and before then cant deny that's what started it all ...you would have heard about park jimin regardless of BTS. Jimin did lock pop for most his teens & then did modern dance & contemporary for like just 1 year. He was obviously really good at that time bcoz that was his only focus & he had time for just contemporary. He obviously would have been extremely refined if he would have just done that especially given how quick his progress was. But he instead chose to be a Kpop star. Then he had to fit into the kpop style of dancing that is basically a fusion of alot of things, plus it's group choreography. Also i was actually surprised to see how much just Jimin retained of his contemporary training after so many years when the I need U piece & Black Swan came out & how much flexibility he did retain. Bcoz i feel like nothing works in his favour here. He doesn't just has time for contemporary, he needs learn & practice group choreography & it's mostly hiphop fusion. And add to that he most likely doesn't even have time for just dance, he is a singer too, they hve photoshoots, interviews, promotions, recording, performances, TV appearances, MV shoots, touring & just alot. The costumes don't help either, coz he tends to wear tight & thick pants, especially fitted at hip & he wears those chelsea boots. There's no way the fabric & fit like that won't provide resistance to his leg extensions. Also his style is definitely a fusion itself now which is unique to him. Bcoz he has had both hiphop & contemporary training fused with the kpop style & the acrobatics he tends to add r more from his martial arts & tumbling background & Korean traditional dances. The first acrobatics he did for I Need U are common aerial spins in Korean dance. So i feel like he has his own performing style now that borrows certain techniques from different styles of dancing & martial arts and uses that but also adds glam that kpop needs.

The jumps he does are performed brilliantly and are meant to have bent legs. I really like Mervs breakdowns of the movements, it's super interesting what he has to say from a contemporary dancers view! He's right that Jimin doesn't extend his arms/legs as much as a contemporary dancer usually does, but that's totally understandable since he's not a full on contemporary dancer anymore. Actually that's one of the reason why I love Jimins style so much - because it's unique. He has that contemporary background and mixed it with Hip-Hop Idol dance. I also agree with what Merv said (in the very first video) about him liking Jimin more in ON-type choreos. I adore Jimins contemporary dance (Black Swan really is that bitch) but my favorites are the powerful choreos (ON, Idol, Fire,...) because he pulls of the powerful movements really precise and sharp while still maintaining the contemporary elegance and gracefulness. It's mesmerizing.

I'm shocked it took that much convincing for him to see Jimin's talent. Also shocked he picked Tae over Jimin, Jhope and JK. That puzzled the hell out of me because I think Tae is not as precise as 3J and can be a bit spastic in his leg movements. Yes he's animated in his facial expressions and they are all synchronized but don't understand how he can be so critical of Jimin then think Tae is da bomb....(over 3J!) I don't get it. 🤦🏽‍♀️

Jimin is known to be one of the best dancer in the world because he has developed his own style using his different styles of dance. He studied contemporary dance at his Busan High School of Arts and was one of the top students. He was so good that when his parents couldn't pay for his schooling, his school did not want to lose a talent like his so they paid for his training. He also studied modern dance, hip hop, k-pop, contemporary, Japanese, ballet, poping, locking and other dance styles. He also was a black belt in taekwondo and other martial arts as well. He incorporated all these of these into his dancing making him a stand out. Not only is he one of the best dancers he also taught himself how to sing. When he joined BigHits, he did not have any training in singing but his father said he did karaoke and he could hit those high notes as a kid. BigHits did not want to train him in singing because they weren't sure they were going to keep him. He did take some criticism when the group first began because his voice would crack at times. When he sang in the beginning, he had to sing those really high notes and had the most difficult choreography parts to do that contributed to his vocals cracking. This is all base on what I read about him. You can research all this for yourself and discover other things about him.

Not that we need his approval...But thanks for being so persistent. He needs to get out of his box n realise idol choreos are diff than classical contemporary choreo..As good as that routine that he did in school was not many ppl wud enjoy it..i do agree wid a couple of things he said abt the technicalities...But typical contemporary dancers find it very difficult to do diff styles becos their body is really set with their style.It all depends on what part of ur body is activated more acc to the style you're performing.Certain parts of the body is utilised more than the other n its diff for each dance style.Almost all ARMYs know how difficult it was for jimin to adapt to the diff styles than what he was trained in from childhood.for eg The extension,flow,body control that contemp or ballet asks for doesn't work for hip-hop.I have not seen merv dancing but I'm pretty sure that even if he's really good at contemporary he may find it difficult to do a dance number like Idol... I appreciate his feedback tho n if he sees this I just wanna say we r really not saying anythin from a negative space.He doesn't have to be scared.We have just known their journey from the start n we have seen everythin for 8 years n we know that a 20 min video won't do justice to wht any of them is capable of..

I’m not him but I’ve been a dancer for the most part of my life and I can tell you the main reason for all the “lack of” extensions is mostly bc jimin is no longer an actively practising contemporary dancer. People underestimate the amount of time and effort + consistency needed to maintain flexibility and posture. So imo, jimin is doing a pretty darn good job for the fact that he’s not doing this genre every day now. But yes, the water could be a factor to cutting short movements as well, especially if they don’t get many chances to practise with that condition.

I think sometimes what we forget as dancers is that perfect technique and form is not the be all and end all of performance. I am a completely different dancer now to when I was being technically trained and as you grow you interpret music and develop movements in new ways because there is more room for exploration rather than the harsh rigidity that you often find in modern dance training. Jimin certainly hasn’t forgotten his technique, you have to appreciate that he is dancing to music that often does not allow the room for growth in movement because of the fast pace of it, his technique flourishes in the transitions and his insane musicality and the quality of his movements, he has such an amazing contrast between his heavy and light moments in dance that is so difficult to replicate and transition between. What we see in the video from the past is his strict training in one dance style, what we see now is him drawing in elements from all sorts of styles to create his own sense of fluidity in movement

Merv still explains that the performance as a whole is wonderful and it’s difficult to use perfect technique with pop/trap music. Also just like anything in life if you don’t constantly practice you lose it. that dance is analyzed by professional ballet dancers, and their comments were totally positive and admiring their great talent for ballet and contemporary mentioned the word PERFECT... We also have to remember that Jimin had to quit your contemporary training in order to adapt to the hip-hop dance in his group, we hope that he can regain his skills in his own. Jimin is definitely a very talented person... I respect your opinion though I don't or we don't agree with it, and thank you very much for your nice comments ❤️ as for the last thing I think you could see his talent... if he had to adapt to another kind of dance for his group, of course it was hard for him.

I think this was actually a live performance of the melon music awards, the change of clothes is done in the moment at backstage by the members of the group that were not dancing in that moment and they joined the back dancers discreetly, they are 7 in the group, as you know, and at the end there are only 5 of them, as the other 2 just finished their bit with the white clothes and left the scenery.

He doesn't criticize, come on, don't be ridiculous, he only says, and we see it later, the parallel between the Jimin who did hours of contemporary dance - daily - to a Jimin who chose another career which does not allow him to keep that kind of level. And yet he's a great dancer - the best in k-pop and in the category of singers who are also dancers, in my opinion - and a performer. Honestly, he had a good reaction.

I just recently found your channel, and I'm loving it! I enjoy all the reactors, their different personalities, and knowing what they'll bring when clicking on a video. I love your behind-the-camera additions (it reminds me of Jessi's Showterview), it adds a cool dynamic to the reactions. And I love the honesty! It's never coming from a disrespectful place. When fans say "no no, the dance practice wasn't messy, it's just that each member has their own dancing style", I can't help but laugh. It was messy, you can say so respectfully and still love the group. Merv is far from a snob and the reactors brings that creative/professional artist perspective that I don't have. So please don't quit KZbin! Recording crap happens all the time to folks, and your voiceover still conveyed Merv's reaction. You all are great!

Ok… hmmm 🤔. Well if ALL he did was dance that would be one thing. He has singing lessons, learning dances and dance practices, workout time, time with other members, recordings shows they work on, writing, interviews, eating, sleeping, and I didn’t mention everything. So … I am sure there aren’t enough hours in a day to concentrate on just dance. Plus Jimin sings while dancing! I can not express just how irritating this man is. And to think they have to learn so much choreography and different genre’s of dance. Wow. I do not think I will be watching this channel again. It is easy being this judge-mental when you are narrow minded. I do understand he is only a dancer.

I think Jimin(and probably other talented idol dancers) is let down by their choreographers and performances. They direct most performances to show as much as possible in the little time they have. If they gave Jimin(or Hobi) ten minutes on stage and gave him an actual modern or contemporary choreographer to work with, the outcome might have been very different. They get maybe 30-50 seconds to show as much as possible in a solo part. The same goes for their group dances. They need to be "easy" enough for the weaker dancers to take part and look good. They can't go all out. His Black Swan solo in ON:E is IMO better than the MV one, though. And to think Jimin only learned contemporary for like 2 years? It's not all hard work with him, he's got a natural ability few have. It's okay for Merv to be hard on him because we all know Jimin came very far with the limited training he's got and he's been hugely influential in Kpop. There are other dancers who's got ballet or contemporary backgrounds, but none of them utilised it like he did. But now everyone tried to do what he does. It might not be as obvious, but he's up there with Taemin when it comes to being an influential Kpop dancer.

I think Jimin would appreciate the criticism too because he's always wanting to improve his skills. Also I really think the comp should stop holding the main dancers back and give them solo stages because they already sacrifice alot since the others would have a harder time keeping up

The voice over was good enough and fun don't worry, and kudos for not giving up!! That being said, i'm sorry but your friend is a snob and a half. Cleanliness and technique are great, but dance and especially performance are about emotion. What makes Jimin's dancing so mesmerizing imo is that he does have a lot of technique and he is very precise, but he also knows when to dirty it a bit and let go of some things for the sake of the performance. Also i'm sorry but pausing every second to analyse every pose and not even trying to appreciate the performance was kinda irking me ngl... Nobody ever said Jimin was an unmatched technical prodigy, but he's been praised by countless professional dancers for his performance, his lines and his versatility so maybe we could tone it down on the nitpicking for the sake of being a contrarian... Again not holding it against you *at all* !!

You have to give him some grace because a lot of his hmmm’s and signs of appreciation are muted. It’s his personal taste and he mentioned Jimins emotion on the I Need U part so he appreciates that and I may have forgotten some parts so please give him grace. Calling someone a snob is a bit harsh when they’re just giving their honest take. It’s not personal at all.

@@Koko3op Sorry i had to mention it about the pauses, I'm all for them usually, it's just that a few times he paused like 2/3 times with only a few seconds in between to criticize several poses in a row and i was like 'will you let the man dance for gs!' A good alternative is rewinding just a bit when you paused a lot not to loose the flow of the performance? just an idea, i know you're not controlling what they do

@@Koko3op Also i'm sorry if calling him a snob sounded harsh to you but i don't find it harsher than the criticism he was giving. I'm not trying to be nasty but when watching something for the first time it's nice to try to be open minded and it felt to me like he came in expecting to be disapointed and ready to nitpick it to death. You can't come into a performance for a song about mental health and losing your passion with the same energy as you'd judge an audition for like a comtemporary dance company or a ballet position... Anyways, i'm sorry if you felt i worded it too harshly, snob is not an insult to me, and it's just an opinion as well, no hard feelings (against him either!)

Yes, the performances are about emotion, especially at the highest level, but I don't see the problem when he highlights that certain gestures are not as they should have been professionally. I don't see why you watch a professional dancer give his opinion if it is to attack him when he speaks as a professional precisely, if you want emotion, a lot of reaction exists on MMA 2020. As a fan, I consider Jimin's performances to be incredible, as I have never seen other singers who are also dancers be so excellent. But for a professional dancer, it's not the same as a fan. Pausing every second to analyze every pose, that's what professional dancers do for a reaction, that's literally the point of this video. Nobody said either that Jimin was an unmatched technical prodigy, but given your reaction, that's the way you view him, as a fan, and it bothers you that he isn't. Maybe you should tone it down, on how you address people who have only made constructive comments - without bashing - on TWO gestures from Jimin on a 19-minute video. Seriously, reflect on yourself right now.

Honestly?? I am going to be very honest, no hate! I think for whatever reason Merv has decided he does not like Jimin's dancing and so he approaches the videos with that mindset to critique! And I say that because he seemed impressed with Tae's dancing and this is not to put Tae down but I honestly find it hard to believe that someone , a dancer nevertheless can honestly say they likeTae's dancing and don't like Jimin's it just doesnt make much sense overall. That being said maybe he is critiquing Jimn harsher because Jimin has a dance background? I don't know but honestly if he does not like Jimin, I don't think you should try to win him over. people usually end up going the opposite way and end up being more critical. Not everyone will like everything the same, and I understand the need to make everyone like BTS and or Jimin but some people just won't and thats ok
