Great! How much improvisation in a performance like this?

For the most part, just like a jazz drummer would play in a free-flowing fashion while "comping" and reacting to the ever-changing music and solos, I do the same on percussion in a situation like this. That being said, I do keep an underlying feel of a 6/8 Bembe over the congas, which I adhere to especially on the drum/percussion breakdown sections.
