Two interviews of Yasutaka Nakata recorded by Japanese TV. (Sky PerfecTV & Top Runner) In the interview, he talks about Perfume. Sorry for my poor translation. Translated lyric is quoted from Perfume City.

I understand how he might come off like he doesn't care, but I think that's just how he talks and stuff, and he cares in his own way.

Great translation, thanks! One thing to keep in mind is this interview was in 2006 or so... Their working relationship is probably pretty different these days.

I really couldn't conceive that concept. It's so simple and sensible though. Thank you!

Geez...am I the only one who thinks Nakata is kind of...rude to Perfume? XD "We don't really talk outside of recordings" "Congratulations on your first album--even though I made it" Then Perfume says "I never knew he actually remembers the tracks" XDDD Nakata is really cool though. --b

I know your comment is long long time ago but I still want to answer it. Nakata sees Perfume as the member of creating the music. He had once said in a magazine interview that he treats Perfume like his music partner and thus when they are having recording, he didn't want to use the very encouraging tone to Perfume as it sounds odd. They have been working together for a long time and such tone would make things awkward lol

I agree. He is fantastic at what he does, but that doesn't make him a genius.

They are talking about Nakata writing a lyric about looking up at a (usually male) lover that is taller than them. Thus they are looking at an upwards diagonal from their straight-ahead point of view.
Nakata is only a genius if it is possible for a pop songwriter to be a genius. A genius is usually someone who works in science, or some other "serious" field. But Nakata is as talented as songwriter's can get, at least musically. I don't understand Japanese, so I can't judge his lyrics. But his music is first-rate for what it is--Danceable, catchy, distinctive pop music.

What is meant by "diagonal below" or "diagonal above" they are talking about a little after 11:00 minutes?

I think it's describing the perspective of a man looking down at a woman and a woman looking up at a man when they are looking at each other romantically.
