My signature scent in the 80s with many good memories. But I was in my twenties, the scent was some kind of statement for those in "Team Lagerfeld", a heavy boozy, sweet scent. Both concentrations were insane, but remember: Nearly everyone smoked in the 80 s. No chance for weak scents.
@cengizgokce812 жыл бұрын
True fragrance's in de 80's where power houses because it needed to cut through smoke and other perfumes. I absolutely love this Chanel. Smell's very good. I heard the first formulation was better more spicy. This formulation is more fresh. The old Chanel egoïst smelled very good. the New formulation smell's disgusting. And the lagerfeld one do you know the name of that fragrance?

Thanks for your insight about Antaeus. I loved this growing up in the 80/90’s and I came across my original 50ml aftershave splash bottle and it hadn’t lost any of its original scent. I just had to buy the EDT recently for old times sake and oh my God it takes me back! Definitely for the mature guy now but at the time this was fairly typical designer stuff. The only bottle of Antaeus I have ever owned I purchased about two years ago. It was used but basically a full bottle and unbeknownst to me it dates to the early 80s possibly first year. Now I knew the scent from the 80s as I started the decade becoming a teenager. At that time it smelled like it was a cologne for my Father but not me! I found scents like Pierre Cardin or Grey Flannel, Calvin, Polo, Matchabelli for Men, etc. to be the colognes I had my eyes on. I can say with certainty that Antaeus is a love and just wish I had given it a chance way sooner. I have no clue as to what the later formulations did to it but I have no desire to find out! Surely the aroma chemicals Terrence mentioned are not found in the original formulation, as I would think naturals would have been used. It is the very definition of "powerhouse". The drydown is truly on another level 😍.

Great review. This has been my signature scent for the past 11 years, every time I smell it it makes me intensely happy to the core. Still looking to get my hands on a vintage bottle or tester, many say it has been neutered over the years. Like you smelled and analyzed both Kouros'.
@JJToyo2 жыл бұрын
Would you wear this on a hot day? Strikes me as one that would only work in cold weather.
@Xearin2 жыл бұрын
@@JJToyo To be honest I don't categorize my scents on time of year. I wear what I like, when I want. It really hit a lot of the right feels with me. But if your skin temperature is on the cold side I'd avoid it on hot days. Or just tone it down on the sprays. That said, Antaeus is a more refined and modernized scent nowadays. It opens more citric and dries down in a more creamy woody scent on my skin (my skin devours typically powerhouse scents). I'd say it's soothing and masculine, but never offensive with that signature Chanel touch. I think in general other fragrances have taken a different direction which makes this stand out as different.
@JJToyo2 жыл бұрын
@@Xearin thanks for this. Your point about the “Chanel touch” accords with what I've experienced with many of their scents. They simply don't release fragrances with rough edges, so even though this is supposed to be in the Kouros mould (another beast mode 80s powerhouse), I suspect that it will manage to play that role without loosing the Chanel elegance. I can't wait to try it.
@Xearin2 жыл бұрын
@@JJToyo No problem. Spot on. I also have a bottle of modern day Kouros, and they are really different. To give it an analogy; Kouros is 'shades, smart jeans, fancy shirt and a touch of hairy chest' and Antaeus is full three piece suit, shaved and groomed. Classic but elegant. Hope you like it. Great addition.

I only purchase two commercial-designer fragrances antaeus and Gentleman Givenchy, original formulation, flankers are horrendious. antaeus is divine, I use 5-8 sprays, I adore it. bath in it. My many female friends loves it on them self, so its unisex. it is not for every one, I wouldnt call it mature people but for people with character, it has aristocratic, vintage vibe. Aaron you should try original vintage Antaeus, masterpiece altho even present formulation is beautiful, ones of Chanel`s best creation. I miss more creations like this with a real projection and silage. I must say that your perfumes Aaron have beautiful projection and silage.
@Slimbk132 жыл бұрын
You know that something must be damn good when Aaron rates it above 8 even though he says he wouldn't wear it! Love how you always take the price into consideration for each review, something that not most do. I value the two Chanels that I have, the Bleu de Chanel (EDP) and the Allure Homme Sport (EDT), they do smell the most refined and natural from the few perfumes that I have. Unfortunately, I am struggling a bit with the performance. I am very interested in hearing your thoughts about layering a fresh fragrance that has less performance, like (Allure Homme Sport), with Iso E Super to enhance it's performance. Would it be a travesty to first apply a couple of sprays of Iso E Super (Molecule 01) on my skin and then to proceed and apply the fresh fragrance on top of that? I heard that it will greatly enhance the performance without changing the scent and it's been suggested by many in the fragrance community, though none of them is actually a perfumer...

How is the performance of BDC EDP for you? I am thinking about getting either the EDP or the parfum version. (I prefer the smell of the parfum a bit more.)

@@FISHinho8 In colder weather I have no complaints about the BDC EDP, good projection for the first couple of hours and I could still smell it on myself after 6-7 hours. This is one of my lifetime favourites. Antaeus was reformulated several times. The vintage versions (through the 80s) were incredible. 90's reformulations weren't that bad, either. That initial beeswax accord which dries down to a fantastic leather and sandalwood is what really stands out for me, but there are so many notes in this composition and they all intersect brilliantly. Modern Antaeus is not bad but I do hope you get to enjoy some of the vintage. It ages well in those black, high quality Chanel bottles. Excellent review!

I came very late to fragrances... it's taken me 4 years and a ton of samples to develop a slight 'nose'.- I've started to realise how samey the trendy fragrances are, and how overtly sweet. Now that I understand a bit better, I find myself drawn to classics for the mature wearer. I don't want to be 'mutton'- or try-hard. I'm in my early 60s and want to own it without compromising my individualistic style. I want arty, but masculine. I didn't 'get' Antaeus on first wears, 2 years ago. Now I realise it's 'different' but trad-- it's masculine, not sweet... and it has rose.... which I love for its rich, refined boldness. Not sure if it's 'arty' but I'll settle for 'different' and risky. I like Habit Rouge in winter, for similar reasons, though it's sweet like a carnation, compared to this. This is what a refined lumberjack might wear in town. I like to wear it in winter, day and night, though it's probably more night leaning tbh. Thinking of making it my winter signature. I love the smell of my little Antaeus cloud. I think it's weak compared to what I had 2 years ago though tbh, so I have to use 4x as much now
