Materials I would add to this list as Basics for Men's Cologne Materials: Veramoss (synthetic Oakmoss), Cashmeran (synthetic musk highly used in men's colognes), Aldemone/Precyclemone B, Helional, Alpha Isomethyl Ionone (sometimes called "Gamma Ionone Couer"), Magnolan, Geranium EO, Pink Pepper EO (or CO2 extract), Ginger CO2 extract. Some "Step-up" Men's Cologne Materials: Sylvamber (similar to Iso E Super, but higher isomer concentration), Hedione HC (High cis, has higher amount of cis isomer), Vetrofix/Cedryl Methyl Ketone, Kephalis, Myrac Aldehyde, Citral, Nerol, Allyl Amyl Glycolate, Farnesol, Birch Tar (rectified) and AmberXtreme.

I just bought a number of these materials and some random ones I wanted to try. So excited to start blending things together. This was a really useful guide, but it was difficult to pare it down without any real reference point. I ended up getting a couple from each category, then subbing out some of the more expensive stuff... Like tobacco absolute is pretty pricey, so I got hay absolute instead because I always thought a Nicaraguan cigar had a musty hay smell to it. I'd like to see what you'd buy for under 300 dollars material cost, like ultra beginner stuff.

I have hay absolute...and to me it doesnt really smell much like tobacco absolute. it has its purpose...but if you want tobacco alternatives, check out TOBACOROL which smells like a cedar chest that held cigars in them.....or TABANONE which has a spicy tobacco twist

Man, thanks so much for putting this together. I saw that you have newer videos on the same topic, but I just wanted to mention that this answered a lot of the questions many videos on other channels just plain didn't. I'm building a brand, and once that brand is significantly large I'm going to use that as a platform to launch subsidiary brands like a fragrance one, so this has been really helpful with considering different levels of preparation that'll go into being ready for that once it's time for a launch.

Can’t thank you enough I already have so many things that I bough since perhaps two years ago, and until I learned the dilitoution lesson two or three days ago from this channel I was would never know why most of my creations smell the same. It’s because of these very strong notes that no matter how little I try to put they would still overwhelm or stay present. In fact I now see that investing in a good scale right away is a must I always counted drops This very lesson ( this video ) is super informative you made me see that I can one day create something to be proud of. I can get some essential oils from the Middle East and North Africa for much less that the prices you mentioned here but I’ll see a way to try and buy me a full kit of your recommenced hand picked choices because I been watching you for a few days now. Amber does have a smell. Fossilized amber has a variety of hardness😮😮, but if heated you can smell it and that is also how you can authenticate amber jewelry. Amber resin, carved handles for utensils

Very interesting for me would be to know a bit about the toxicity of these raw materials while sniffing them nonstop. Say I start experimenting, with no previous knowledge about chemistry or perfumes, and I rely simply on my nose and creativity. I just took my fragrance 101 course at perfumers apprentice yesterday and needless to say I’m hooked!

How was the overall experience? What did you learn during these courses?

It was great! Rachel my instructor was awesome, we had some good laughs all day! We started in the beginner room just making a more simple fragrance getting used to mixing and matching scents. Made my very first fragrance here. Then we went into the artisan perfume lab and did a blind smell test which was super interesting! After that we made a key accord to go into my final fragrance. I made pina colada because it fit the profile I was going for. After that Rachel and I started working on and dialing in my final scent which turned out so much different than I had imagined it. I think thats the tricky part about creating is trying to make a scent that you have in your mind by melding the mats together to create that vision. Although it was different that what I had envisioned its still really nice! She showed me how to dilute although I wouldnt know what ratio to dilute certain materials if I had to. The ratios, percentages, math, and just focus/detailed recording you need will probably be the toughest. I was considering getting their beginner perfume kit. Can you take a look at it on their website and see if its a good one or if I should just go with your lists

I wouldnt bother with their $40 beginners kit, because it just a bunch of their 'house accords" in which there are many better accords/bases available. Their beginners Aroma chemical kit however is pretty good to start with, but youll still want to pick up a few good bases from IFF/Givaudan (givco)/Firmenich. Things like Rose Givco, Oakmoss Givco, Casis Base, Jasmine Base, etc......also will want to pick up a few naturals too like bergamot oil, lemon oil, cedarwood oil, etc

Yeah I was looking at the 250$ one that comes with like 50 different materials. Only thing is my girlfriend works at doterra, which makes essential oils, so idk if I should just buy the aroma chemicals and crystals etc from PA and get the eo's from doterra? Might just stick with the kit because I wouldnt know what rations to dilute some of the eo's off the start anyways

Great video, good explanation of content. However I would like to let you know that 'Amber' is actually a fossilized resin from extinct trees much like our pine trees today. Amber can indeed be melted with low heat (about 250 c) and when it is melted certain ambers may give off a very pungent odor many find off-putting, due to the acids contained within.

Thanks man. Just don't take everything I say too seriously. My approach and thought process can be different from others. Every Perfumer is different and has different approaches to things. There is no right or wrong way....it's almost like an art. The end result and making people happy with the scent is what matters. How you get it to that point is entirely up to you.

This is a tough one. A formula usually is made specifically for the end product type. Youll find that a formula you made intended for a alcoholic perfume spray may not work so well in a lotion or soap. While you can use the same materials, but youll have to tweak it (the formula) for the intent of the final product. Some materials behave differently in their final end product.

I got pure Oud oil, $25 for 6ml on eBay. Very potent and long lasting. Just from handling the bottle I get the smell on my fingers which will transfer to my clothes and where I touch my skin or hair, it lasts multiple showers. 6 ML of this is a lot. I think I could make gallons of fragrance with it because you will only need a trace amount or it will be too much for Americans noses.
