I am one of rare few who primarily shoots macro and these days I have been recommending people just buy one of Venus Laowa Macro lenses(even over 1st party lenses for their system) which are decently priced have great performance(as long as people can tolerate living with all manual lens). Pergear, TTartisan/7Artisan and AstrHori are a step behind(either on performance or availability) Venus Laowa lenses.

I own a Laowa macro lens that I regularly use, and yes, they typically do a very good job with macro design.

Very thorough review as usual. 2x macros are tempting for the occasional macro shots I take but without AF it makes the auto focus shifting/bracketing (stacking is done in post) impossible. For that reason I stick with the Nikon Z 105mm Macro and add a 24mm extension tube when I want to get closer than 1:1. You can stack tubes for even more magnification but I usually don’t. Now if someone would make an excellent 2x Macro with AF, that would be something to really consider. No one does so I’m not sure if it’s some technical issue or not. If it’s designed mainly for macro use it wouldn’t have to be very fast, just accurate, but so far I haven’t seen one.

Interesting feedback. I have seen a few macro lenses that are going beyond 1:1 with AF, but not a full 2:1.

i love macro photography however finding the appropriate macro lens is extremely hard. For once so many macros focus breathe, making focus stacking quite hard and for other, there are macro lenses for aps-c and full frame, but the ideal combo is fx lens on a dx body. FX macro lens on FX body is doable, but not as effective; and most 2x macro lenses can't focus to infinity and most of them macros alone alltogether also are manual focus only.

Odd to have the center not be the strongest ( and kind of disqualifying for a macro). Thanks for pointing that out. At $400 Laowa 65mm 2x is better for APS-C and the Laowa 100mm 2x at $500 for Full frame would be worth it over wasting a few hundred on this. The APO design is worth the extra money and the resale is strong if you decide macro is not for you.
