It's on the workshop: steamcommunity...
Welcome to another episode of Scrap Mechanic! Today I am replicating one of the strangest tank track mechanisms I've ever seen. It comes from the 80's cartoon He-Man and is called the Attack Track. It appears to be a mix between a tank and a walker, where the tank treads actually flip end over end as the smaller wheel rolls along the inside.

It's actually just a visual, it's a wedge. Sm handles complex collisions by having a separate 3d model file with a lot of dots in it and when physics engine runs it just connects 1 point to all other points and does it for each one, so you can't have concaved collisions in the parts in sm at the moment, sadly

As a kid I always thought that you couldn't possibly steer it so I was pretty amazed to see it turn. I really loved this vid, very nostalgic, you did a wonderful job with something that was actually purely made for the novelty value.

Lol I was going to suggest suspension to apply downward pressure into teeth. Glad you thought of it though, it even had more additional benefits, great. If that didn't work I was going to suggest combining the tire and rod methods to get a more consistent speed and grip. Figured out a fix nicely. One thing that made me surprised a little is the spudguns. You have so much room in there you could have just placed the spud guns facing outward, hidden inside the tank so you'd only see the tip of the barrel then connect the treads so that the gun could shoot through two blocks and the mechanism would be more hidden. Still really cool execution of the creation.

Nice one! i do have 2 suggestions that could hopefully make it smoother (less skipping teeth) and prevent it from falling apart - The 'tracks' should prolly be 2 blocks taller so you can make a bit more of a curve at the ends - Then use pistons to have a 2 block high piece 'floating' in the middle of the side that the 'wheel gear' slots in to, so that gap becomes a circular slot, this should prevent the 'wheel gear' from jumping up and skipping teeth

I’m not sure how good you are with The Modpack logic but I’d love to see you try to make a T-180 from the ‘08 Speed Racer movie. They’re jet-powered drift cars except they still have grip because all four of their wheels face forward no matter how sideways they are!

19:10 If you never need those spud guns again... just attach a pipe to the side of the cardboard to hold the gun. Then when the cardboard gets shot off, the gun detaches at the same time. If you attach them to the forward movement button, then they don't even need a separate control.
@flyingmunk8956
@flyingmunk8956 2 жыл бұрын
I know you want it to be more " realistic" but what if instead of having a gear or wheel system inside the track just have a bearing and a piston attached to the inside tip of the track ( assuming you can use logic to start and stop a bearing, I don't have the game) so it would be piston extend, bearing spin 180° piston retract, bearing spin 180°, and repeat. Also if the tracks were a little shorter horizontally it would spin more easy because the would be less leverage you are trying to overtake.
@havesta
@havesta 2 жыл бұрын
Hey ScrapMan! I dont know if it would be cheating but instead of using a type of wheel rotating in the tracks you could use a piston for the horizontal movement which pushes the the tracks (that are than attached to the vehicle) forward (extend) , flip the track using a controller and than retract the piston which moves the car/tank forward again.
@JBobjork

think what u needed to prevent the slippage at 12.36 is an inside block to keep the axle from bouncing up.. probably would need a piston or suspension so the axle has no collision that way you can have a centre area of blocks as a runner/ chain guard type of thing :)

Now to see if you can duplicate He Man's Dragon Walker. Likely not as it would require rather exacting physics to make the device tilt as needed when stepping, and making the driving gear on the edge that wouldn't slip out wouldn't be easy

@-user_redacted-
@-user_redacted- 2 жыл бұрын
I think this might work better if you tweak the timing on the tracks. Ideally you want them to be staggered, so when you're "stepping" with the front left, you're also going with the back right, same the other way. That may negate a little bit of the tilting problems because it should stay a little more level
@Vessekx
@Vessekx 2 жыл бұрын
You might be able to get slightly better results building the ‘gear’ & ‘teeth’ out of wedges, with the gear mounted to a wheel for better ability to keep in place in the ‘tracks’.

wait I think that I have the answer. It’s a tank now let me explain, so basically a tank tracks is just a move able floor that gets placed in the front and picked up at the back giving the wheels a smooth path to follow and this thing is basically doing the same thing but in a different way and sense It’s not lifting the track off the ground this would be considered a tank track. You could put a bar across the middle of the "track" pieces to hold the axle in place better. You would just need to use a non collision block on each end to let the axle through. And if you extend the axle past the pipe gear and do the same thing on the glass side, it may be more stable side to side.

I don't know much about this game, but I feel like you may have been able to make this work with the tires on the high-friction surface if you either added more weight to the tires/frames or a suspension as you did with the gear design, ensuring persistent contact with the surfaces through the rotations.
