Pericardium:- Normally there is very little fluid in the pericardial cavity - just enough to keep the opposing serous pericardium lubricated. Pericardial effusion, howerver, is pathological and refers to an accumulation of fluid in the pericardial cavity, secondary to the pericarditis. It may be serous, purulent, fibrinous, caseous (tuberculosis) or hemorrhagic in nature. This is easily seen on a plain x-ray or an ultrasound.
