The clear C64 case is actually quit retro and would completely feel at home in the "Clear Craze" that started in the 80's and went into the 90's. Back then it was a big trend for manufactures to clear case their products. Items like portable cassette players, calculators, phones, Apple's translucent iMacs, gaming machines, etc. Very fitting to see the new retro Commodore case on Retro Recipes. 👍

Very impressive. I watched this episode saying "please don't crack it" over and over again as you put all the screws in, and then attacked it with a drill. Heart attack when it went crunch! Glad to see there was no real damage :) I suspect that the slight sagging is why the screw holes and locking tab didn't quite line up, maybe printing the top and bottom as 2 pieces avoids that? Not sure I'd have been brave enough to lever it open with pliars and hit it with a dremel but the result is outstanding Great job as always

One of the benefits of printing with ABS, is that it's weldable with acetone.. wipe the surfaces with acetone and press together.. hey presto, you got ONE part instead of two, and done well it will look and behave like it originally was printed as one.. Downside is just that ABS can be a bit of a hassle to print but....

In terms of straightening out the top piece, obviously there's the option of leaving it overnight with some books on top, etc. etc. But combined with that, what if you unscrewed that part with the four screw holes and started again, putting in each screw part of the way, and slowly torquing down different screws so that it starts to pull in straight and re-align?

CNC Kitchen has a video on "printing glass". You have to print SLOW. REALLY, REALLY SLOW. You also have to print 100% aligned infill. So it will use a lot of material. I think you find glass .3mf files on printables. It should be compatible with bambu studio (as it's just rebranded prusa slicer)

Nice work, that looks absolutely amazing! I still have my original breadbin and much prefer their look to the newer slimmer versions, so it's great to see a new project that uses the classic shape. Thanks for also showing their prototyping. I've always been a bit disappointed by the finish of most 3D printers and always wondered if there was a better quality version out there we could use - obviously there is! Do you think you could create an opaque case of a similar finish to the original using this process, or would it always be a bit shiny? And did you stitch the two files together to make one large, complete one, or did they do that for you? Cheers!
@RetroRecipes Жыл бұрын
Thanks! The 3D Model comes with this unibody version. I suspect the translucent or black/white would be closer to the original finish, then just apply matte beige spray if you want to make it look truly original. It would be close!

I was going to suggest modifying the model to make it 2 piece instead of 4 before sending it off, but it looks like you did that (unless the original model is available in both versions). I know Noel's Retro Labs did a video on 3d printing and he got a case that was FDM printed. It looked like injection molding it was so good. I'd consider that option since you can probably get more colors (I would think) and you said it feels a little strange with resin. Anyway nice result!

@@RetroRecipes by the way I think one of my comments got lost. The anomaly you mentioned...I think I saw that on 3d musketeers 3d print fix Friday video. There was a similar issue and he said it was a volumetric flow issue. The program is the printer is too fast for the filament with a stock nozzle. It seems like an odd place for that to be the issue though so it's hard to say. But it looked very similar. If that is it, the solution is to lower the volumetric flow rate. It should slow down the printer. CNC kitchen did a video on the subject as well.

I've often entertained the idea of getting a vintage off of Ebay, but the sticker shock is painful. While the option described here is tempting, I've also been known to set fire to water...maybe this project is above my comprehension. Nonetheless, it is gratifying to see this machine I loved so much way back when occupying almost holy territory.
