I went for a walk around the University area and I spotted a number of urban deer.
These deer generally don't need to fear predators, but they do need to avoid the harms of city traffic.
Filmed on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada.

Crazy how accustomed they are to people and vehicles. There used to be a pack of 6-8 coyotes that strolled past my apartment on a nightly basis. But since the city started selling land in favour of poorly built houses the coyotes have not been seen or heard

Here it's really tough to see the ones in the countryside because they are very skittish and in town they are less concerned with seeing people. They were able to make it fine this night without getting maimed. It's a different set of risks for them living in the city. Probably much safer here than in the forest where they have to contend with predators.

I’ve had so many close calls with deer. They are plentiful on our roads. My scariest moment was heading to a call at 110mph and having them run in front of my patrol car. Fortunately I didn’t hit any.

There are different dangers for them, that is for sure. We have to watch out during the rut and when a doe has fawns. They've attacked people in the city here. I still think it's great to see them😀

It can get quite busy. It is one of the cross streets leading to one of the major throughfares. The deer are usually pretty good about staying out of traffic, but some are less street smart than others. There seem to be a lot around this year.

Some of them are smarter than others and know how to navigate the traffic. Did the deer run into the front of the car or the side? I once had one, on the highway, run into the side of the car. I guess we were going fast enough that they couldn't get in front of it. It is really scary to have them jump out in front of you. Hopefully, your car wasn't too damaged and the deer was able to walk away.

Beautiful animals. Somehow hard to imagine that some people hunt those animals. I hope they made it back to the forest. The city is not good especially for animals
@agesadventures
@agesadventures 3 ай бұрын
They are beautiful animals. I am a hunter so maybe you frown on that. One day soon, I'll be doing a video to explain why I hunt and how it has made me a better advocate for wild animals. I'm not very good at catching animals though so some would say I'm not a very good hunter😁 These deer only have to worry about cars here. There is a lot of parkland around for them to forage and sleep. It is not very often that a predator comes into town to try and eat them. I do think these deer would be better out in the forest, but they do not know it anymore since they have spent all their lives here.
@karelianprepper

@@agesadventures We have so few deer here, so the attitude towards them is perhaps different than in areas where there are even too many of them. We have a lot of moose. They cause serious accidents. Here there are deer fences next to the highways and they are also hunted in the fall so that the number of deer does not grow too large. Each hunting area is told the amount that is allowed to hunt
@agesadventures
@agesadventures 3 ай бұрын
@@karelianprepper For some animals we have lotteries for people to be able to hunt them. So there are only so many allowed to be taken. Deer here are not done on a lottery system because they are so abundant. Depending on the area, there may be certain restrictions on sex and age of the deer. On Vancouver Island, the deer in the wild are pretty nervous and not easy to harvest. In the city, where no hunting occurs😁 , they are starting to use contraceptives on the deer so they will not reproduce as much.
@karelianprepper
@karelianprepper 3 ай бұрын
@@agesadventures It's interesting to know how things work elsewhere. Fortunately, hunting is regulated, because otherwise it would go wild. Now the balance between different animal species is maintained. I don't know what would happen if humans didn't hunt animals. Would one animal species take over and others would disappear. Some people abroad are horrified when reindeer are eaten in Finland. They are half wild deer. Very good meat, not fat in meat. They are not here where I live, but in the north. Where Santa really lives. 😄
@agesadventures
@agesadventures 3 ай бұрын
@@karelianprepper Human activity changes the balance of nature so that humans need to take action to stop one animal from taking over and another animal disappearing forever. Logging, mining, and farming have had huge impacts on the land and the natural world. It opens up spaces that would not normally be there. This allows some animals to thrive and others to decline.

@@scootladychicago there is a park close by and also the university grounds close as well. A little further and there is a nice golf course for them too😁 Hopefully, the deer learned from their experiences and will be careful walking out into the street going forward!
