This 1960s promotional film produced by Caterpillar Tractor Co. shows the usefulness of different CAT equipment in snow removal. It shows a variety of CAT equipment in action including the CAT 922 and 944 track excavators, motor graders, and wheel loaders. These are shown with different configurations such as plows, v-wing plows, and snow blowers. The film continues to highlight the versatility of CAT equipment, notably that the same equipment you need in summer for road construction can be easily modified in winter to clear roads.
0:22 “The Snow Problem”, 0:44 man climbs into a plow and begins clearing a snowy road, 1:07 a CAT Wheel Loader in operation, 1:18 CAT Motor Grader in action, 1:31 animations showing different configurations of the loader and grader, 2:34 a CAT 944 Track Excavator being refitted for winter operations, 3:14 the CAT 944 clearing a snowy road, 3:30 the CAT 966 clearing snow with a plow and wing in various environments such as the countryside, on bridges, and in a city, 5:12 the CAT 966 demonstrating its maneuverability in close quarters, 5:32 CAT 966 breaking down a snow drift with the plow’s lift mechanism, 6:26 CAT 944 clearing snow with a snow blower, 7:29 a track excavator using a special blower to disintegrate crystalized snow, 7:53 excavators equipped with buckets clearing lighter snow, 8:08 a CAT 922 using a large bucket to clear a parking lot, 8:42 CAT 922 loading trucks with different buckets, 10:19 a track excavator and a CAT No. 12 motor grader clearing a street, 10:31 CAT No.14 and No.12 graders clearing roads with their blades, 11:40 a motor grader using a v-plow wing to clear snow, 11:53 a 112 Series F motor graders working hard to clear heavy snow with v-plows, 13:55 motor graders with blowers attached to the plow, 15:08 a No. 14 series D motor grader using a reversible plow to push snow off mountain roads, 16:07 a CAT Wheel Loader operating in limited space environments, 16:24 animation showing different types of snow removal machinery, 16:45 CAT machines operating in the summer, 17:29 produced by Caterpillar Tractor Co.

I know exactly what you mean. My Dad ran a 64 Galion for NYSDOT with the V and 1 way blades. I didn't ride along in winter as they were 12 hour shifts but all summer every chance I got. 30 odd years ago I seen it for sale but couldn't afford it nor a place to put it.

Decades ago when growing up in the snowbelt region, our city had a fleet of 4x4 Austin-Western graders w/ both "V" plows and wing plows. For the most part they were adequate in keeping the city's avenues, streets and alleyways clear. Front end loaders occasionally came out to clear the interactions where large pileups of snow had accumulated. Thanks for sharing this video: it reminds me of why I headed south.

We may be getting less snow now, but I also think we've gotten MUCH MUCH MUCH better at clearing snow as well. It looks here like they used to wait for a storm to pass before they went out to clear the roads. Now days, we clean the roads continuously during a storm, so that it never builds up so much like this video.

As a Galion grader guy, I can relate, even on a smaller scale, to those Cat's doing the job. Get into a pickle, the grader starts to hop. Amazingly enough, I couldn't get the '54 Galion stuck. Standard 14' blade. He'd always get out for more. Cat, A-W, Adams, Wabco and Galion to name a few doing the job in heated comfort.

Thanks Caterpillar, for advocating roadsalt. I hate the stuff. What I like is random days off, sand when you've got to go, and cars that don't get rusted. Mention salt again, and I'll say a few nice things about Pettibone and New Holland.
@davidroberts6594
@davidroberts6594 4 күн бұрын
Yes, salt makes it temporarily easier to drive but it destroys vehicles/roads and bridges. It's cheap compared to sand and won't clog up drains. Hate the salt, going to be moving out of the salt belt soon I hope.

Funny how not even one machine had the stupidly annoying back up beeper in those days, today it's just ridiculous and not for public safety but the coward companies that have the beepers blaring away heard by people that don't need to hear the stupid distracting beep sounds the money grab piggies who rent all types of machines have hundreds of stupid caution and warning stickers plastered on every square inch of open space on the outside and inside is again not for the operator or the public but for insurance liability immunity can't be sued over a loss of limb or loss of life incident when the warning stickers are present basically like buying a downhill ski ticket on the back in stupidly small print barely readable is the legal jargon for the skill hill you can't sue us but the The lawyer will find the gap in the wording and successfully get a class action lawsuit victory with the ski hill for a victim who purchased a lift ticket & died. But the dumb non smart censored sonar back up beeper of today is a constant nightmare for us civilians especially throughout the whole night hours right up to when the rat race starts again 7am ish. Someone needs to ban those dumb back up beepers in residential zones and outlaw the dumb things and start installing the auto industry panic paranoid parking sensor, side blindspot alert and the rest of those confirmed distracting auto things on cars today which actually increases traffic accidents I'm sure just ask the local scab tow truck company.
