This fascinating travelogue, one of Andre De La Varre's "Screen Traveler" episodes, shows views of Egypt and especially Cairo and the Pyramids as they appeared in the 1930s. The film includes images of the Shepheard's Hotel, the leading hotel in Cairo and one of the most celebrated hotels in the world until it was burned down in 1952. The film shows dragoman standing in front of the Shepheard's terrace, according to the narrator annoying guests. The westernized "Modern Cairo" is shown with its bustling traffic, trolley cars and trams, and opera house. British troops are seen at the 3:30 mark, and the Arab section at the 4 minute mark. Two traditional funerals are seen in the film, including one at the 4:30 mark. Horse drawn buggies are also seen in the film, although many gasoline powered cars and trucks are also seen. The minarets and mosques of Cairo are shown at the 7 minute mark. A visit to the Sphinx and Pyramids, and a camel ride, is seen at the end of the film.

Mohamed Arfa, I hope you understand that Christianity had been in Egypt from before Islam. Christianity entered Egypt in the first Century AD, since then it became the majority religon. It only lost its majority status around the 11th century. However Egypt to this day still hosts over 20 million native Christians, most of who are members of the Coptic Orthodox Church, which has been in Egypt since the dawn of Christianity. I hope you also realize that Farouk only became King in 1936, this video is in the early 1930s. So you are wrong about several things there... hope you would get more info on a topic before you open your mouth.

@@davidhanna9003 I didn't like his comment but you're wrong too! There's nothing called "religions", there's no "Christianity" word in Bible, it's one religion called "Islam" that's the name since Adam and Eve, Islam has books and messages through eras, the older books plus the known ones Torah, Bible and the last message Qur'an. So, before Jesus (pbuh) came with gospel message, Egypt was on monotheism for thousands of years, especially since Misraim the grandson of Noah (pbuh) built Misr/Egypt after the great flood, we don't care what happened to Jesus message in the 4th century at first Council of Nicaea because the respected Arius from Alexandria fought that blasphemy in his era, also your percentage about the trinity christians here is wrong, it's about 10-15% , so you know now that Egypt was on monotheism thousands of years ago, and that's why the majority believed Islam last message easily, we didn't found it a strange beliefs or something, and that's us.

The Muslim conquerors did not destroy any church or monastery, but rather freed the Christian priests from the prisons of the Romans.

At 6:41 is a man using a lathe to slowly carve what looks like a European-style chair leg. These artisans would be seen working in particular districts of Cairo and they also made the wooden screens for house windows. These wooden screens are called "mashrabiyat" in Arabic and they could be seen adorning the facades of many buildings in Old Cairo.

The Shepheards Hotel was destroyed by a mob around the time of the Revolution. It was owned by the Mosseri family who were Jewish and also built the King David Hotel in Jerusalem. It was part of the Egyptian Hotels Chain which included the Cataract Hotel in Aswan and the Cecil in Alexandria.

haytham elAraby not really , muslim brother hood played a huge part in the coup d etat against the king and were supported by the military . and in his time there was no religious tv channels and ouahabi freaks like in times of sadat and mubarak . they don't have to be in power to have an influence on the country . look how women and men were dressed in this video and see how women and men are dressed now days in egypt .muslim fundamentalists were spreading hate speech , racism , and ugliness in the society , and the result is most of women and men in egypt are dressing like the afghanis and ouahabis in saudi arabia . when u curse beauty and praise ugliness u creat an ugly and dirty society . a person whos unable to take good care of his own body cant take care of his country and the property of streets .this is not just in egypt , all the countries that are under the influence of religious fundamentalists are dirty and chaotic
