I scrimped and saved in the mid-1990s (25 y/o) to pay the $7,598 ticket price fly Concord round trip from NY to London-Heathrow. I had the money for the trip and 10 days in England saved but decided wait a few years and spent the money on something else. By the time I was ready to go again the price was $11,000 and 9/11 had occurred (I was also in the Army and in Law School). So I figured after law school, I'll go. Well, in my second year of law school the last flight occurred. I have always deeply regretted not going when I had the opportunity. So, please, learn from mistake, if an opportunity to do something that you have always wanted to do comes along, take it, and don't let anyone try to talk you out of it. Just ask them, "would you want me to take away something you have always wanted or wanted to do?". In the end, we are each the only person who can keep you from realizing/achieving your goal or dream.

Wow, I'm so sorry, I was in high school at the time and was devastated when they retired her - it was one of my dreams since I was a kid too. I can only imagine how gutted you must have been to have actually had the opportunity, plans, and ability but never got to go.

I almost made the same mistake. I redeemed the Concorde award off Continental OnePass (200k mls award code PCAF) for STO-CDG-JFK EWR-SJO and return to FRA. However did not really have money for the actual trip, so kept postponing it. That award was valid 1y and you could reschedule and change dates for free. CO also stopped codesharing with AF just after I redeemed the award (2002), meaning it was my last chance to do so. I was just days away of the award expiring, meaning I could have the miles redeposited. They would be good for 5 such trips in economy. I didn't and instead booked and had the ticked issued. Very glad I did. I saved some money by eating in the lounges I had free access to and thought it's quite funny to fly on the Concorde but not have enough money for food.

Not really. Today's planes fly further, more economically & makes more money doing so. They have done far more for humanity than Concorde did.

My mom flew the Concorde once from NY to Paris in the 1980s for business; she said that not only did they weigh the luggage, they weighed the passengers as well. Not sure what they'd have done if someone was overweight! But apparently they fed you amazing food and gave you champagne the entire time you were in the air. I have a set of the Mid-Century Modern Raymond Loewy-designed-for-the-Concorde flatware they used, the handles were plastic cos of weight concerns. Very cool to eat with them. Saw one once before they grounded the line, I was sunning on the roof of my apartment building and saw this giant white plane gliding towards me; apparently the flight plans had been temporarily changed into JFK for some reason, and it flew directly and silently overhead about 500 feet off the ground. The coolest thing. They've got one now on the deck of the Intrepid aircraft carrier.

Not so much “overweight” as far as people go, exact weight just about calculating the takeoff parameters and perhaps weight distribution for center of gravity. On some very small planes they will weigh you and tell you where to sit as well.

@@cyberGEK Exactly. The Concorde was very sensitive to weight and CG. A factor in the Concorde crash in France was a CG past aft limits and being several thousand pounds over the max takeoff weight.

Flew on her in 1992 on a promo flight from Jeddah to London. An utterly incredible experience, one of the highlights in my life. I cannot begin to describe the takeoff - very noisy, rammed into your seat and incredible speed over the ground.

I flew it on the ground in 1980 😂. It was in a TWA hangar for unscheduled maintenance at JFK and my godfather who worked as an avionics technician at TWA took me. I was 11 years old. We met up with the BA rep and got a tour of the plane. I still have the suede portfolio that was in the seatback pockets with the postcards, headphones, and certificate showing that you flew on the Concorde. I always winder where that particular plane is today.

Interesting and informative. I remember as a kid back in the 1970’s being excited of this being the future way airlines would fly back then. But the market determined otherwise. Now the cost would hardly offset the time it takes to load and unload then waiting your turn to takeoff then land.

I understand they were a computer input only and not directly connected, so it didn't matter how they were "thrown", hence the lack of delicacy in the way they were handled.

I flew LHR-JFK by Concorde in 1991, one of the most memorable, yet short, trips across the Atlantic. BA staff were simply superb in everything they did. I think the intentional decision to ground these magnificent birds was one of the worst business decisions that both BA and AF has ever made.

While I never flew on the Concorde, I did see it take off many times from JFK. Also got to see it up close when the Concorde did a "Trip to Nowhere" tour. My sister did fly from NY to London for business on the Concorde!

A beautiful plane! Sad the Concord seemed justifiable only to the wealthy or corporate traveler. I didn’t realize how few passengers the Concord carried. But, as I did when I flew to Paris in an A380, I would have enjoyed the Concord immensely.

Yep! That's him. Not sure when in the 70's this was but this was either when he was working as VP of the space division at GTS (a nasa/government contractor) or one of the co-founders and executives of SBH, a space and defense consulting company. He was a great man. Cool to see him pop up unexpectedly here. Just passed away recently I believe. RIP.

I think the year is 1980 given the Saturday December 6th date mentioned and the cars shown at JFK. This would be about 3 years after the start of LHR-JFK service.

Surprised he had to pay $15 for the limo! Back in the 80s I used to fly BCAL Biz Class into ATL. The fare included a stretched limo transfer to the Peachtree Plaza, always a female driver as well.... #goodolddays

Flew twice (R/T) on AF in March 2003. Paid US$ 68 Plus 200.000mls off Continental OnePass. For once the trip was far more important than the destination.

Hahahahah!! "...best seen on the left-hand side of the aircraft today.... a slight curve to the horizon..." @09:08 because for some reason, the right side didn't stretch itself quite properly this morning, and isn't as bendy as the left side is!? o.0 That or perhaps the "curve" decided to show-off to the people on the left of the airplane and not so much on the right... or straight ahead. lol. Just one side of the airplane and not all three. Hmmm! Besides, according to that Neil Degrassy Tyson(sp?) character/persona, this is still WAAAY too low to see any type of "curve". Or at least he emphatically states, it's too low. Emphatically!!! IDK. Still woulda been cool to fly that fast, in a commercial airplane. : ) Lucky folks! : )

I know you don't actually care to learn or better understand reality but in case anyone else is genuinely curious, it's a function of sun angle and weather. It's much easier for the human eye to perceive a gentle curve when the limb is sharp and well defined, with a clear boundary free of clouds or haze. Depending on the weather out the left vs the right, conditions will typically make it easier to view from one side compared to the other. From the height of Concorde, the perceptible horizon curve is about 4 degrees per 90 degree FOV, which is very slight but absolutely perceptible, however the small windows mean it's highly dependent on optimal viewing conditions.

​@@GlutenEruption Wait! Did they mentions sun angle and weather?? Not sure WHERE that came into this equation... Either way, they are flying WAY above ANY kind of "weather". The "viewing conditions" would be the same, 360 around the plane. Visible from all three sides. They are flying E-W or vice-versa. Depending on direction, the "LEFT" is either looking N or S. Fairly simple to deduce. Not a lot to "differentiate" the sky with, however. Also, the human eye IS a "globular" shape to begin with. The lens in which we see, is curved itself. So naturally, that effects anything looked at. Especially an "infinite" horizon line. You are also exempting the fact, that they are simply not high enough to even begin to perceive any apparent "curve". So, not sure WHAT y'all are trying to say... It would seem that you are attempting to stretch this into a conceptual pretzel. When there simply is no need. I STILL think these cats truly BELIEVED what they were saying (as do you) and obviously NOT "seeing". It's interesting what the mind decides to "see", once it's been programmed and conditioned to expect. Hope that makes sense. Thanks for the RE and yes, am totally into learning new things. As long as it piques my interests, curiosities and understandings. Just please, do not inundate with lies and deception. That just makes learning something a drag. Cheers!!

This is readily apparent if you visit one of several massive dry lake beds found in the western United States. Altitude is irrelevant. If the aircraft is above a solid cloud deck, then the horizon will be obscured. During the flight in this video, that was obviously the case looking out the right side windows.
