This color film from 1964 illustrates the basics in firearm safety in the home, and includes examples of how to inspect several types of firearms to ensure they are not loaded and safe to handle. After Mrs. Johnson accidentally discharges a carelessly placed shotgun in the basement rec room, a narrator explains how to handle each of the Johnson family’s firearms, and even provides some backstory on each weapon. Guns examined here include a Savage Model 99 lever action rifle, a Winchester Model 52 .22 bolt action target rifle, a 12-gauge pump action shotgun, a Smith & Wesson .38 revolver, a P08 Luger pistol, and an antique flintlock rifle. After all firearms have been examined, the narrator invites Mrs. Johnson to inspect and unload the same shotgun she had had a run in with earlier. A presentation by the National Rifle Association of America. Written by Lewis Baer. Directed and edited by Werner Schumann. Produced by Norwood Studios, Inc., Washington, D.C.
The National Rifle Association is a gun rights advocacy group based in the United States, first chartered in 1871. Though originally nonpartisan, since the 1970’s the NRA has become increasingly criticized by gun control and gun rights advocacy groups, political commentators, and politicians.

Guns used to be cool before every one got one , thinking they took an instant Rambo pill. What a difference in presentation . Latest NRA promos I see are all about , you would already be dead if you did not carry at home at work and on the streets. i got 2 levels of NRA marksmanship at a BCA camp .in the 1960s. I lost interest in guns when I got into high school.

Hi Dale My grandmother related an incident from when she was a little girl. “A black snake started coming up through the floorboards. Mum grabbed the shotgun from over the fireplace, spun around and gave the snake both barrels” Years later, after I got a little firearms experience myself (Army), I queried my Nanna on a couple of points. No, the double barrel 12 gauge did not need loading. No, the shotgun was not kept “broken”.....(shudder) She finished the story with “Dad never did get around to fixing those holes in the wall” They don’t make great grandmothers like that anymore....

@@Daledavispratt yes indeed Which in turn taught the next generation which went through a couple of world wars & the great depression By age 8 my Nanna was the baker for her family (she was forth of 16 kids). They went through 180 pounds of flour every 10 days reflecting the amount of bread she made. By age 10 she was felling eucalyptus trees (hardwood) up to 40 inches diameter which she then split to provide the wood for baking. At age 14 she “went into service “ looking after a family of 6 adults, all at least 10 years older. She lost her older brother to WW1 at Polygon Wood ; the battle at Fromelles cost her future husband, my grandad his sanity. He rejoined army for WW2 which cost his life 1942. At age 70 she still had upper body strength better than most men (not exaggerating!!!) her only physical weakness was bad knees from arthritis. She didn’t like me joining army but never complained. I learned firearms safety from my dad & a NRA Youth Gun Safety class in the 70’s when I was 7-8. 1. ALWAYS KEEP YOUR FIREARM POINTED IN A SAFE DIRECTION. 2. TREAT ALL FIREARMS AS IF THEY WERE LOADED. 3. KEEP YOUR TRIGGER FINGER OUTSIDE THE GUARD AND OFF OF THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOU ARE READY TO FIRE. 4. BE CERTAIN OF YOUR TARGET, YOUR LINE OF FIRE, AND WHAT LIES BEYOND YOUR TARGET. Every time, All of the time, No matter what.

I am 72. When I was a kid on the farm dad had a gun hanging above several doorways and they were loaded. We all knew they were loaded and were not to be touched! Not just for safety reasons but mainly because dad did not want us plinking away his ammo and leaving the gun empty. One time a rabid stray dog was killing our geese and dad came flying in, snatched down a gun and went out and saved the rest of our geese. If the gun had been empty there would have been hell to pay!

The only changes to the rules would be the addition of two more points. The two additional points are italicized. 1. Treat all guns as if they're loaded. 2. Never allow the muzzle to cover anyone nor anything you're not willing to destroy. _3. Keep your finger off of the trigger until your sights are inline with your target and you intend to fire._ _4. Be aware of your target and its backstop. (Alternatively: be aware of your target and what's beyond it.)_

All of us who lived back then remember how good the times were. Everyone was so Patriotic & Respectful. People were really raised well. And go back another Century or two from 1964 and you can ask, how could moms just leave a loaded shotgun by the door or a Musket over mantle ready in case a wild predator came for food and doors and windows were very skimpy back then. And little tots played and no one got hurt. All this proves without a doubt that it's Society that has been corrupted by Evil and is the problem. Guns are inanimate objects. If Guns were really to blame then why are we doing background checks on people?? We should do background checks on the Guns and see what they've been up to in their long life and existence. Many of the Classic Guns are older than the people that buy them. There's a peace that comes from the Holy Spirit. That's lacking now. It can easily be proven by the ones that read this or other comments or just come to a topic like this ALREADY exploding with rage inside just looking for a place to vent it. That's fine because we see right through them. The problem is these Evil people can't vent their pent up rage enough and then they go out and become mass killers like the Boston Marathon Pressure Cooker bombers. We need to get closer to the Holy Spirit, common sense and respectfulness of others. I still hold doors open for ladies no matter what age or color.

Incorrectly called automatics? Is that why the manufacturer called them automatic pistols? Just to be wrong?
@Watcher3223
@Watcher3223 3 жыл бұрын
"Automatic pistol" archaically refers to the fact that the action automatically ejects the spent cartridge and chambers a live cartridge from the magazine using energy from the discharge to perform the action. This is in contrast to performing this task manually after each shot, as would be the case with a bolt action rifle or an AR-15 using subsonic ammunition. In modern parlance, "automatic" versus "semi-automatic" refers to whether or not the firing cycle repeats when the trigger is held down. With a semi-auto, the action will automatically chamber a new cartridge but the firing cycle will not automatically repeat with the trigger held down; you must let go of the trigger to allow it to reset before you can fire the next shot.

Great stuff. However since I don't have kids I do it a little differently. My guns are stored in a locked container, my house. Several of them are loaded and with in easy reach. If I wake up to the sound of my front door getting kicked in I don't want to have to try to load a gun in the dark. I fear nowadays the push to "always keep all your guns unloaded and locked up" is the first step to a ban. The antis can truthfully say "If they are unloaded and locked up they are worthless for self defense so why even have them?" If you have kids it is tricky but you can come up with a system you are comfortable with. One possibility is a gun with a magazine disconnect safety. You can store the gun with a round chambered and the gun will not fire unless the magazine is inserted. Another option is guns like Taurus and S&W revolvers with a built in keylock. The gun can be kept loaded but it will not fire unless it is unlocked. There used to be a company that would modify S&W J frame revolvers so they would not fire unless you were wearing a magnetic ring. The modification was expensive but it gave you a nearly foolproof solution. There are many "hidden gun safe" videos on KZbin. You can buy or build a safe that looks like a bookshelf, flag, dresser or almost anything.

And yeah, we still have our fingers and we didn't shoot our eyes out. 😉

Ah, the good ol' days of the NRA. Back when it was just did boring stuff like teaching people how to safely use and safely handle, and didn't have to pay tens of millions of dollars in annual salaries to its executive leaders. Well, I suppose the old NRA also did slightly more exciting things, like distributing WWII surplus rifles to their memebers. Back in the early 60s my uncle had trouble literally trying to give away a case of M-1 Garands that his fellow local NRA leaders asked him to distribute: everyone who had their shooting certificate and wanted an M-1 already had one, or two, or three. That uncle is dead now, but he quit the NRA long before he got too old to shoot. I believe it had something to do with, in his words, "over-the-hill actors yelling about their 'cold dead hands'."

The problem is that you were taught to believe that it was the NRA who first instigated the more extreme rhetoric when in fact it was the NRA's response to the unconstitutional attack by the U.S. government on the 2nd Amendment and its supporters (which should include every American if you believe in the Bill of Rights).

Under lock and key and the ammunition in a different room? Seems a ,tad, excessive...and unwise. About as unwise as having your firearms (neatly ,packaged) hanging on a wall. Everyone in the home should be encouraged to learn the basics and to use what you have. [The wife ,here, could {quite likely} out shoot hubby.] Children require special understanding. "No" is an important word for parents to learn. The application ,in practice, varies. Forbidding knowledge makes that knowledge more attractive to them. Forbidding access to a thing, does the same thing*. Be honest and open when you teach them. Explain the consequences of misuse and poor handling. Then demonstrate those consequences.* Explain the rules of safe handling ;and adhere to them ,yourself. Lead by example! As for shooting: Encourage them to take it up ,but do not force the matter. *There's an old Simpsons episode ,where Ralph Wiggum and Bart become friends. In Ralph's dad's room; they find his cop stuff. Guns , grenades and riot gear. They get caught. Chief Wiggum says "You know you're not supposed to go in there. What ,is, your fascination with my Forbidden Closet of Mystery?".. ...then , gives them each a riot helmet and a baton and tells them to go play. *See reply

How my family does this is, as follows: Grab (let's say) a .22 LR * and whatever you have ;that offers a distinct difference in size/power. An object that is sturdy ,and that {a child} can't break easily will be your target.* Have the child attempt to damage the object in question. When they don't ;go set it up. Let the child examine the two rounds of ammunition. Explain the parts and how they function. Explain how they operate through the gun. Answer their questions ,honestly, and speak to them as you would an adult. Do NOT talk down to them. Ask them : "Which of the two bullets will bust the target?" Proceed to shoot the target with the .22. Render the gun clear and take them to examine the target. Let them examine it (themselves) and explain that it will do that to most anything. Then ask them to consider what the larger round ,might, do. Have a conversation regarding ; 1. What to do if they find one. ,and, 2. What to do if their friends get out a parent's firearm. Kids can smell bullshit. Often ;they are better at this than adults. Honesty ,and mutual respect, are important. In the face of the consequences of an accident (or what have you) all are equals. Living with them is a heavy burden. Look them in the eyes and use truth and ,only, truth. *If you have an (EXPIRED) can of food, that's the best option.

I can not understand, how someone can call the NRA criminal. What I learned from this organization is, that they provide courses, coachings, lessons in every form for anybody, who is responsible enough to be aware of the potential danger of a firearm. I mean you CAN buy a rattlesnake for your in-house Terrarium without knowing anything about it although it is a „cool, badass looking animal“. But is it really nature who made a mistake, if an accident happens? No. You are. A firearm IS dangerous. If you don’t want one - fine! But please let people, who are deciding to have a firearm learn how to handle them save. To demonize an organization who is providing this knowledge and setting the standards for a save use can prevent people from visiting the NRA because they are afraid of dealing with a „insert bullshit here“ Organization. And no, I am not a member. But I would be, if I was an US American.

Sold out? How? The NRA changed because its opposition was changing, becoming ever more radical with trying to do away with the 2nd Amendment. Change was necessary for pro gun organizations to meet more extreme anti-gun challenges and to try and reverse what the anti-gun movement had accomplished already (1934 NFA, 1968 GCA, Hughes Amendment in 1986 FOPA, 1994 AWB, etc.). Otherwise, we would have already lost the 2nd Amendment by now.

@@jamesslick4790 Ehem. I never said that there was no explosion. I said that it's a controlled explosion, which is exactly what it is. And where was I wrong for you to inform me of what I already know? The only reason for the cartridge or shell to "explode" in a manner which you are alluding to is because the chamber is unable to safely contain the pressures generated from combustion of the propellant, such as because the cartridge/shell is charged too hot or because there's no way for the pressure to escape as intended as would be the case if the muzzle was blocked.

Most killed by guns are by their own hand. Second most killed by opposing gang members. This accounts for 80-85% The other 15-20% are self defense, homicide, and a few accidental deaths ~400 per year in the US. Hunting accidents, playing with guns, people thinking they were unloaded are the main causes, alcohol play a part in 25-50% of these accidents except in the 0-9 year old range.
