That's true and not true -- this past week we were looking through dozens of endangered home movies and roughly 50% of them had something amazing to see! We found rare footage of Ebbets Field, footage of the Great Lakes Exposition (a world's fair that we'd never seen footage of before!) and shots of a streamliner steam locomotive that were really amazing. But yes this one does kind of take the cake! Thanks for being a sub and please share the video with friends.

As has already been written, the tank factory is the “Nibelungenwerk” (Nibelungen works) in St. Valentin, Lower Austria. St. Valentin is located about 30 km southeast of Linz. According to one source, Hitler visited the Nibelungen works twice. The first visit was on June 20, 1942, when he was presented with the Panzer IV tank. The second visit was on April 4, 1943, this time accompanied by Albert Speer and Colonel General Guderian. Since Speer and Guderian are not seen in the film, the footage probably shows the first visit. The date is therefore June 20, 1942.

Born in 1889 in Braunau am Inn, moved to Passau at age 3, returned to Austria (Leonding) at age five and was sent to school in Linz though he hated it and eventually moved to Vienna to study fine arts. He always identified with German Nationalism at an early age, but still had memories from childhood of his growing up around Linz.

Great point. Film is an amazing medium. Compared to videotape (which has a lifespan of maybe 20 years but a lot less on certain formats) and digital (where standards and hard drive connectors are constantly changing) and DVD (which also goes bad after a few decades) - film can last hundreds of years. We are often dealing with films that are in the 90+ year old range -- in perfect shape. And yes, there are films that are a lot "younger" that are in terrible shape. As you say, a lot has to do with how they were stored. It's a race against time in most cases with all media (digital/tape/DVD/CD/etc.) to archive it. Thanks for your comment and for being a sub.

@@PeriscopeFilm Neat. I've always been fascinated by the history of Moviola, Steenbeck and KEM. There is very little information about each company except for Steenbeck online. The only reason I know Moviola makes a flatbed editor is because my school had one. (Although the Steenbeck was far superior.) Otherwise the internet just tells you about the original upright editors.

The "library viewer" is a bit obscure because it was developed late in the game, and primarily for use by news organizations and the military. You can see an LVR in action in one of our films! kzbin.info/www/bejne/n4vMlaiHl9Sspdk

Linz was very close to Hitler's hometown, he also lived there for a while. I believe in his last will and testament he also wrote that he wanted to endow an art gallery for his art in Linz (lol).

We'll be scanning more of these films in the future -- but most of the rest appear to be standard WWII era German newsreels.

My brother worked at Archives Canada and restored many older films from nitrate which is extremely flammable film, gave me a tour of his work, fascinating work.

Thanks for your comment. We don't have any nitrate holdings in our collections -- only safety film.
@glaeken41962 ай бұрын
@@PeriscopeFilm The Archives would receive hundreds if not thousands of reels of very old Nitrate film from all over the country and it was his job to determine if it could be saved and transferred to safety film. He said they still have buildings full of nitrate film still not switched over to safety film.

That was amazing. I'm guessing that film was shot early in the war. From what I understand, Hitler cut back his public appearances as the war went against Germany.

We have actually gone through most of it at this point -- most of it was standard German WWII films that are well known. This one reel was a huge exception to that rule. You will find a lot of German films on our channel PeriscopeFilmII Thanks for your comment and for being a sub.
