This U.S. Navy film from the early 1970s starts with a discussion of how in the first five months of 1968, Navy pilots only achieved an "unacceptable" 3:1 kill ratio over North Vietnamese Migs. As the narrator explains, the small Migs were able to outmaneuver U.S. aircraft in combat. The Navy Fighter Weapons School or "Top Gun" was created as a response to this problem, using the A-4 Skyhawk as the adversary aircraft. The results were extraordinary, with an increase in kill ratio to 13:1 in a fairly short time. Top Gun became a permanent command.
At 1:56, the T-38 Talon, a Mach 1 trainer, is shown used at Top Gun. At 2:18, the Northrop F-5E Tiger II is shown being used as an adversary aircraft. Classroom instruction is seen at 3:00, showing the five week curriculum which includes 90 hours of ground school. At 4:29, Navy pilots flying the F-14 Tomcat are seen taking off for dogfight maneuvers against A-4s, T-38s and F-5s, which are seen in camouflage paint schemes. At 5:10, ground crews relay information about bogey locations, and dogfight maneuvers are seen. These maneuvers are recorded on the Air Combat Maneuvering Range (ACMR) which can be used later as a debriefing device in the classroom. At 7:00, classroom analysis of the encounter is conducted in a reconstruction of a dogfight.
At 9:00, instructor staff takes on the students in a classic Top Gun exercise, with the staff playing the role of enemy interceptors that are attempting to penetrate to and then destroy a bomber force. The intense maneuvers shown here are truly remarkable demonstrations of the agility of the F-14 in combat. At 11:00, an aircraft is shown in the crosshairs of the heads-up display, and falls victim. Graduation from Top Gun is then shown, and the awarding of the Top Gun patch to those who participated.

That's basically the same computer program as the CAD programs of the day and not far from those early 3D Computer Graphics used in movies, like Westworld (1973), the 1st feature length film that used computer generated graphics.

USN 68--74, NAS Miramar 70-74, ETR-2. Maintained GCA RADAR and TACAN. Miramar was a great place back then. Our RADAR shop was out near Q6 on the high speed taxiway, behind the "bore sight range" building. Had a part time job at the auto hobby shop. Got to see all kinds of aircraft while there.

My brother Jim went to Annapolis in hopes of flying, until they took him for a ride his junior summer. Scared the shit out of him. Decided he would stay with the surface Navy. Designed defense systems for the Navy for 40 years. Brilliant man!!

that's cause all these sorts of fims were made in house by their respective organizations. these aren't 3rd party documentaries but usually promos to get high level recruitment or video reports for those involved. really changes the whole vibe when it has a serious purpose behind it and not just entertainment. it's nice. I wonder if we still make anything of the sort - have a hard time imagining it's anywhere as good if so.

I used to live in a house that bordered on the western edge of that base(Miramar Naval Air Station) and we would go to the annual Miramar Air Shows, lots of fun. The Marine Corps took over later and now it is called the Marine Corps Air Station - Miramar. It's located northeast of the city of San Diego, just north of an area called Kearney Mesa.

I don't know if anyone can confirm this story, or not. I heard or possibly read that Top Guy's F-5 Tigers were former South Vietnamese Air Force aircraft and the US Navy acquired them just before the fall of Saigon. I don't know if that is a true story or not.

It's entirely possible. The web says that the SVAF had these aircraft on a loaner basis. "The USAF ... passed the Skoshi Tiger F-5Cs to the Republic of Vietnam Air Force, giving the South Vietnamese a modern supersonic fighter/bomber. The USAF continued to supply F-5s to the South Vietnamese, who had previously only had flown piston-engine A-1s and small Cessna A-37 counter-insurgency light attack bomber. The South Vietnamese only used their F-5s to do bombing in South Vietnam. The light fighter never faced a North Vietnamese MiG. Given the F-5’s high speed and great maneuverability, it could have been a good adversary for the MiG-17, MiG-19, and even the MiG-21."
