Made by Grumman to promote the F-14 fighter program, ONE OF A KIND shows how the F-14 can operate alone in tactical conditions, with its cutting edge Phoenix missile weapon system.
The Grumman F-14 Tomcat is a fourth-generation, supersonic, twinjet, two-seat, variable-sweep wing fighter aircraft. The Tomcat was developed for the United States Navy's Naval Fighter Experimental (VFX) program following the collapse of the F-111B project. The F-14 was the first of the American teen-series fighters which were designed incorporating the experience of air combat against MiG fighters during the Vietnam War.
The F-14 first flew in December 1970 and made its first deployment in 1974 with the U.S. Navy aboard USS Enterprise (CVN-65), replacing the McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II. The F-14 served as the U.S. Navy's primary maritime air superiority fighter, fleet defense interceptor and tactical reconnaissance platform. In the 1990s, it added the Low Altitude Navigation and Targeting Infrared for Night (LANTIRN) pod system and began performing precision ground-attack missions.
This film is part of the Periscope Film LLC archive, one of the largest historic military, transportation, and aviation stock footage collections in the USA. Entirely film backed, this material is available for licensing in 24p HD. For more information visit www.PeriscopeFilm.com

That last shot with the wingtip vortices/condensation is so badass. Better than anything in Top Gun; they had no idea how to film fighter aircraft. Cinematographers from the Final Countdown got it right though.

Did you fly off the USS America (CV-66) by chance? “Mom is at the bottom of the Atlantic” gave it away. I was an AO in VF-102 Diamondbacks and was embarked onboard the America. Great plane, good ship. Tomcat was retired way too soon. A victim of a one bird should do it all mentality. Thank you for your service.

I'm amazed at how long you've kept your American hardware when the Russians would have gladly sold you 4th gen hardware before the sanctions were put in. From outside, Iran's dedication to the F-4, F5, and F-14 seems irrational. Then there's your national airlines.....

Yes indeed! Read many reports where the Iraqi AF would turn tail when they detected the AWG-9 radar emissions just so they could avoid the Tomcat! Also have marveled at the modifications you all did to enable it to fire AAM. Impressive!

As a matter of fact it was the Iranian airforce and its pilots that made F14 so famous by scouring over 160 kills and only losing 4 of its birds. Also it was the Iranian F 14 pilots who managed to shoot down the Russian legendary MIG 25.

MIG-29 as well in 1988. Saddam had acquired the MIG-29 to kill the Irani F-14s and sent them to the Irani airspace in 1988. Iran scrambled a 2 couple of F-14s to intercept them. They got into a dog fight and sure enough the MIG-29 were shotdown.

I'll never forget watching the news when I was a kid, and seeing Peter Jennings tell about a couple Libyan MiG-23s getting smoked by F-14s flying off the old JFK. I believe it was either Jennings or Dan Rather that said the "Libyans brought a pair of kitchen knives to a gunfight today.....and lost". Every boy in school, myself included, just knew we were going to be Navy fighter pilots when we grew up LOL....those were the days. I miss the F-14, a truly thoroughbred fighter born for air dominance on the sea.

When you look at the total picture, it truly is the greatest fighter/interceptor combination US ever built and possibly will ever build. One pilot recently attested to the fact that the airframe could withstand 12.5G turn without fatigue damage. It truly was one of a kind and created to the dominate the airspace.

45-50 years ago it was a one of a kind. In 2018 it's still one of kind. The plane go out and 500+ miles away from the boat and fight and still be able to come back. That is range.

The F-14 was a badass jet. I was with the first deployment with them in VF-2 Tomcats on the USS Enterprise. West Pacific cruise. Then came back and was attached to VX-4 Top Gun Squadron in Las Vegas.

I have the same story bro. I was station at Miramar as well. I was in VF-2 Fighter Squadron. I worked out of the hanger that said Fighter town on it. It was either our hanger or the one next to us. It's been a while but remember Fighter town vividly...It was 1974, October through December, then shipped out to The USS Enterprise for a west pac tour. We came back to the same hanger. I worked as a plane captian. I backed more planes in and out of that hanger then anyone in the squadron. I was a pro at backing them in. The movie Top Gun was a total flashback for me. The hanger sceen where Kelly McGillis walks up between the pilots was the hanger we used. Eventually after coming back off the cruise and getting ready for the next one they needed plane captains for VX-4 but first sent me to Pt. Magoo in Oxnard Ca. Spent 4-6 months there training on both f-14's and Phantom F-4's.Then transfeered to VX-4 Top Gun Nellis AFB.

+Scott Van Der Veer Yeah, so that was the deal for me. I rotated from NAS Agana, Guam to CONUS and early '76 reported to Pt. Magoo for VX-4 assignment and some squadron orientation. We went on a detachment to Yuma, half of which was scrubbed due to sandstorms. From there I went up to Nellis AFB for VX-4 Det Nellis. Nellis operations were more in line with early Red Flag type missions more so than Topgun. Because we were a test and experiment squadron, our pilots by default had to be F-14 hot shots and most likely some if not all Topgun alums.

Raoul - please don't be so quick to jump all over Scott. I think you have assumed he was an Annapolis educated Navy pilot, which is completely the wrong understanding. Unless you have been part of a U.S. Navy aviation squadron, you won't understand what the role of a plane captain is. A plane captain is an enlisted person in charge of ground functions involving the care and readiness of aircraft in direct support of the pilots. Plane captains do not fly aircraft. They work significant hours on the flight line helping to fulfill the squadron's air mission priorities whether on land based stations or sea going carriers. I would be generous and give him a pass on typos.

Sorry for the misspelled words. Still feel the need to correct someone bro. Lighten up Elvis..I was not a pilot. A plane caption just so you know is the same thing as a crew chief in the Air Force, they are responsible for launching, recovering and the inspection of the aircraft. Final sign off before pilots take the aircraft up. Maybe you should do your research before you throw off on someone for a few misspelled words.

I miss the F-14. Great plane. I was a Navy jet mechanic and part of Aceval/Aimval Det Nellis AFB with VX-4 1975-1976. Loved sitting in the cockpit doing engine adjustments and investigations at the hot spot going from idle to zone 5 afterburner. Our six planes all had the Hughes optical recognition system installed. The pilots loved the system, loved the aircraft, flew the daylights out of it and made the Air Force F-15's looks lame. I have one of the original patches with the tomcat saying: "Anytime Baby." The F-14 was a complete package.

Bryon Scheer: The reality of the evaluation said otherwise. There are HUD videos of F-14 getting gun kills on F-15. Read up on AIMEVAL/ACEVAL in 1978. F-14A outperformed the F-15A every single time in dog fights. The variable geometry wings and better aerodynamics, low wing loading gave the F-14 a big advantage. The final report gave F-14 a 2:1 advantage. F-14 could turn tighter (there are videos on it showing it do a MRT in only 1200 feet) and it could retain energy better. You can also research "Hoser" Satrapa who was one of the F-14A pilots who had dog fights against the F-15A in 1978. Against the F-5E Tiger, the F-14A had a 2.55:1 kill ratio during AIMEVAL/ACEVAL while the F-15A had a 1.78:1 kill ratio. Read up "Flight magazine October 1977" for the full report on what the HUD videos of the dog fights revealed.

@rogermahajan7586
@rogermahajan7586 6 жыл бұрын
F14 was indeed far more maneuverable because of VGW. FACT is every time these fighters came head to head, F-14 more than held its own and there are videos and documents to prove that. Iran had a 160:1 kill ratio with the F-14s against MIGs, SUs etc. Shah of Iran also picked F-14A over the F-15A after seeing a back to back demo. Early versions of the F-14 called 'Alpha' had the TF-030 engines, which were not as good as the P&W in the F-15A in the 70s, but F-14A made up the deficit in aerodynamics and variable geometry wings giving broader flight envelope, which is why it won mock dogfights. F-15 could not touch the F-14 in tight turning capabilities as it held the record of the smallest MRT of only 1200 feet. it is on video on youtube. There are videos of HUD/TCS from F-14 showing F-14 getting gun kills as late as the 90s. They are available on youtube as they are declassified. There were no "countless" losses. That is complete BS! There is ZERO proof other than mechanical failure, US Navy lost any in dog fights. It could turn tighter due to the variable geometry wings, lower wing loading and the airframe had a better lift/drag ratio. AIMEVAL/ACEVAL was a gold standard in testing the Navy and Airforce air superiority. For every 3 dog fights, F-14A won 2 and F-15A won one. Once the F-14 was upgraded to B/D variants with the GE-F110 engines that produced 58,000 lbsf of thrust compared to 48,000 lbsf of thrust by the F-15C, it was the deadliest fighter in the 90s and the early 2000s until it was retired.

It was revolutionary for its time. The ability track 24 targets and fire at six was a potent increase in lethality, but was exactly what the Fleet needed to defend against the mass raid tactics of BADGERs and BEARS with subs armed with their long range anti-ship missiles design specifically to sink carriers. However, one plane doesn't make it all better. Working together with the E2C, the Ticoderoga CGs, and every ship/aircraft sharing information is what made the U.S. Navy the dominant threat to any potential adversary back then and still today.

From Wikipedia. "Operation Frequent Wind was the final phase in the evacuation of American civilians and "at-risk" Vietnamese from Saigon, South Vietnam prior to the takeover of the city by the North Vietnamese Army (PAVN) in the Fall of Saigon. It was carried out on 29-30 April 1975, during the last days of the Vietnam War. More than 7,000 people were evacuated by helicopter from various points in Saigon." The navy stopped bombing Vietnam in early 1973. The navy used the F-4 until the bombing stopped. I fail to see where the F-14 could have served during the air war which ended when we stopped bombing North Vietnam.

@@user-mx1nf5rf5y Just a correction on the G limitation on the F-14. I was and Aviation Ordnanceman in an F-14A squadron in the early 1990's. The aircraft had no problem pulling 9G's. However, there was a directive to limit G's to around 6 G's if my memory is correct for piece-time flying to prolong the life of the airframe. The A models were getting up there in age and until they could be replaced with newer B and D models, they wanted to keep the G loads down just a bit. I think they also restricted the top speed to 1.5 Mach for piece time flights. If in a dogfight, no limits, do what you have to do. I was not a pilot, but I think that is about what our pilots told us back then.

+David Bundy We don't know that as they never met in combat. I bet the Iranians are pretty good too. They helt an impressive record in the war. But they don't have the same backup (AEW, EW etc.) as the USN.

+David Bundy I think it's strange to think about... Here are two nations of very different ideology, but I will bet anything that there are Iranian F-14 pilots out there that saw some bootleg copy of Top Gun when they were a little kid and said "Nothing is getting in my way, I'm going to be a Tomcat pilot."

I don't think any American pilot managed to shoot down the Russian legendary MIG 25 by not only F14 but any other aircraft. But I admit that US airforce is hundred times more powerful than Iran's.

@PatrickLipsinic
@PatrickLipsinic 8 жыл бұрын
+therealgsicht An air-to-ground capability was not developed until the 1990's but with the D model it was able to carry a wide range of air to ground & surface weapons. Just think of and surface attack F-14D carrying 6 Harpoons.
@therealgsicht
@therealgsicht 8 жыл бұрын
+Pat L Thanks, but that doesn't answer my question. Were there plans to implement anti-surface capability into the Phoenix missile? Though, come to think of it, the narrator probably made a mistake and wanted to say "surface launched" or perhaps "targets close to the surface". That would make more sense since newer ASCM´s were flying lower.

+Fred Taylor ... Our Naval Aviators were taught to fly the '' Egg '' ( Oval ) ... Our engines had Tremendous thrust that would out fly a MiG ... The first aircraft to stall and turn over ... were immediately ... eliminated ... Keep your eye on your fuel consumption ... quickly move on to the next IP !!! ... During Viet Nam, the MiG would be waiting for Us to bank fully and once we were in straight & level flight ... Our '' 6 '' was exposed; ditto for the '' Wing~man '' ... causing Our '' Kill~Ratio '' ( that was Extraordinary from WWII ) to seriously ... Plummet !!! ... Respect for your service, and the aircraft sir. Very top notch aircraft, F-14 they have one on the Hornet, berthed at the old Alameda airstation. LBJ was a straight out thief, and traitor, sold out our country, he served only big oil, and the agenda of the corporation. He cared nothing for our country, may he burn in hell....This what I am saying, is from a career, naval/Army officer, who served from 1945 to 72, saw action, in WWll, Korea, Viet-Nam.

I Signed up at Alameda Naval Air Station ... Loved the 3 days spent there and Of Course, the Gut Check ride where the pilot told me I pulled a 7.5 G's in our Stunning Maneuvers. It was while over the Tall Trees on the East side of the U~C, Berkeley's football field that we were in a '' dead~stall '' maneuver ( what the T~34 Mentor is best known for its Wonderful, Quick Recovery... that failed to recover properly!! ... The Pilot told me ( pre~flight ) the protocol for '' jumping out '' and good thing he told me, as he had told me to begin cranking the cover as we were in a '' straight controlled dive '' ... just when I got my hand on the crank ... he was able to pull out of the '' deadly dive '' and ( lol ) threw back into the seat with NO straps ... attached !!! ... I was hoping to jump out, even though I knew that area well ( growing up near the campus ) ... I still wanted to take that jump !! ... How I LOVED THAT GUT~CHECK RIDE ... without a '' Zoombag '' !! ... lol !!!

This and maybe the SR-71, sexiest aircraft ever produced. Disgusts me that 80 were sold to Iran, many of which still flying, reverse-engineered and refurbished by Russia. Just wrong, and sad. We'd have a lot more of these beautiful airframes, with their rich history, hanging around the US in museums and such. If only.

Excellent Grumman propaganda film for the F-14. It even had Randy Cunningham singing its praises. You might remember him. He won the Top Trophy, and later was a Congressman from California before he resigned in disgrace as a crook.
@nickkaning7616
@nickkaning7616 3 жыл бұрын
There is no Top Gun trophy. That was Hollywood propaganda. Grumman made quality aircraft. The F-14D models with capable pilots could still take on F-18s and other 4th Generation aircraft. Randy Cunningham was a damn fine pilot who made mistakes in his life, as most of us have. Regardless of what you think about Randy, perhaps educate yourself before making incendiary comments that are based of Hollywood folklore and political scandals. This film is about the F-14. Not the aviation tabloid show equivalent to the "view".

The F-14 first flew in December 1970 and made its first deployment in 1974 with the U.S. Navy aboard USS Enterprise (CVN-65), replacing the McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II. Once again the F-14 did not see combat in the Vietnam war. The United States Navy flew its last Vietnam mission in 1973. Our POW's were returned in 1973 and the war was over for the Navy in 1973. The Tomcat was not there. If you think otherwise, get over it.

You clearly are clueless. F-14 especially the upgraded D version with the most powerful GE-110 engines and updated avionics and the standard A version with the TF-030 engines took part in Operation Desert Storm in early 90s in both air-to-air superiority and the D-version (nicknamed: Bombcat) was used for bombing missions. Dale Snodgrass has written an editorial on his missions with the F-14 in 1991 and his dog fight with a Fulcrum MIG-29. Even when it was retired in 2005, the upgraded D versions were being actively deployed in Iraq for combat missions as part of operation Iraqi freedom. The D version was still the most lethal fighter when it retired in 2005.

You obviously need a lesson in history. The Vietnam war ended for the United States Navy in 1973. I was there. The F-14 made its first deployment in 1974. I was there. The Vietnam war was over. The F-14 did not see combat in Vietnam. All the BS you have quoted has nothing to do with the fact that the F-14, no matter how great it was did not see combat in Vietnam.

John DiLoreto I never said it was used in Vietnam. It was only used as escort for the cargo planes in Vietnam war bringing army men and equipment back. I was talking about deployments in 90s and the 2000s.
