A fascinating take on ocean travel for the time, a time I wish I could've experienced myself

I was on the Leonardo Da Vinci in 1969 from New York to Italy. 2 years later came back on the Raffaello

my family traveled from New York to Naples on the LDV when I was 6 in January 1961. It was a very rough trip across the North Atlantic with ropes up until we entered the Med

Me and my parents were traveling on the LDV, I was 4 years old. We crossed from NYC to (transit France?) Genova. It was in 1961 or 1962. What a wonderful cruise

I am trying to track down the vessel my mother came from Southampton to the Caribbean in 1966. Do you know of good source for such? She recalled it being called Cariba it may have been Italian owned.

What class did these boys travel looks like Cabin based on the bunk beds and the dining room looks nicer than Tourist.

The movie theater scene was not the Leonardo, it was the Michelangelo. But the Leonardo was stunning in its c. 1960 mid century design love the green corridors with the blue cabin doors - so mod. Some of the murals and art work were almost like pop art, and the cube shaped chairs in the main ballroom were really cool. Wish this video had shown more of the ship than it did, it really was beautiful without the Vegas style glitz of today’s cruise ships.

When I was a kid I went on it to see my grandparents off they were going to the Bahamas and it was docked in the Port of Miami, this was probably late 70s. I also remember seeing a movie theater inside of the ship, it truly was a grand creation of it's time. At least that's what I thought but I was only 9 or 10 at the time. Does anyone know how the fire started I've tried looking it up but there's not much info about it. Rip Leonardo Da Vinci🙏

This was when the LDV was being pushed as the flagship after the sinking of the Andrea Doria and before the new twin ships came out around 1962.

I think the takeaway from this is how many parents would let what look like 12-15 years olds travel by themselves for 8 days out of contact for the most part these days. Kids I think were generally maturer (darn kids back then seem more mature than some of the manchild adults of today).

Back when you could just leave your kids to travel on their own for over 1 week on a ship

Leonardo Da Vinci was a nice vessel but her hull should be painted black. The white color devoid this ship of all her northern Atlantic charm. I simply hate white colors on hulls.

Wow, the word CROSSING, is right in the title on this one and Periscope STILL can’t get it right.
