🔹//Description//
This video follows the Perkins Crew as they work to repair and repaint a Toyota truck that is in rough shape.
The video begins with the group assessing the condition of the truck. The hood and roof are in poor shape, with faded and chipped paint. The friends decide to sand down the problem areas and apply a fresh coat of paint.
The first step is to use a sanding block with 120 grit sandpaper to smooth out the rough spots on the hood and roof. Erik comments on how expensive the materials needed for this job can be, especially the primer and paint.
After sanding, the group applies a self-etching primer to the bare metal spots to prevent rust. They then use a flexible sanding block to continue smoothing the surface in preparation for the new paint.
The friends encounter a few challenges, like filling in small holes and dents with a body filler called Bondo. This requires multiple applications and rounds of sanding to get a smooth finish. They discuss the time-consuming nature of properly repairing a vehicle's body.
Once the prep work is done, the group moves on to applying the new paint. They mix the paint with a high percentage of reducer to thin it out, then carefully spray it onto the truck in multiple thin, even coats. The friends comment on the importance of using the right spray technique to avoid drips or uneven coverage.
After the paint dries, the group moves on to applying the clear coat, which adds a protective glossy finish. This step also requires careful application to ensure an even, smooth result.
With the painting complete, the friends shift their focus to reassembling the truck. They reinstall the hood, fenders, and other components, taking care to align everything properly. They also add new floor mats to complete the look.
Throughout the process, the friends provide commentary and advice based on their experience. They acknowledge that professional auto body shops would likely have done things differently, but they are happy with the end result given the constraints of working in a non-dedicated workspace.
The video concludes with the fully reassembled truck looking significantly better than when they started. The friends admire their handiwork, proud of the transformation they were able to achieve through their collaborative effort. The video serves as a glimpse into the time, skill, and attention to detail required to properly repair and refinish a vehicle's bodywork.

I think a tip I heard before was to keep your shop floor damp when painting, so any dust etc will stick to the ground and not get airborne.

Boy am I glad to see another upload from one of the Perkins Crew - seriously been worried about you guys with all the damage from Helene that I've been seeing. I can only imagine what you must be dealing with... and it's nice to know that you are up and at 'em. Might not be a bad idea to put a body shop together, actually - something to do indoors when the weather keeps you from working on the site.

Oh c'mon, fellas - you don't have a separate building for body work or paint? You guys ARE builders, right? Seems like a challenge rather than an obstacle. - but I bet you have ENOUGH to do at the moment.

Well done - looks great! As the happy original owner of a 2011 Tacoma 4 door TRD Sport with 163,000 miles on it I can tell you that if you take care of these that they will last forever. Mine still burns less than half a quart of oil every 5000 miles. And the transmission still shifts smoothly with no slip. Of course, the paint on it looks about like yours did. I've been so pleased with my Tacoma that I bought a 2024 4Runner Limited with the same (slightly updated) drivetrain (I'm keeping the Tacoma). I'm going to treat it right and given that I'm 65 it will probably be the last vehicle I buy.

Use the palm of your hand instead of your fingers to feel high spots. Try using a tack cloth to get the dust in between coats. You'll be amazed at how much dust you get off. When you use body filler try sanding it while it's still slightly tacky otherwise it's like trying to sand concrete. Spray the hard to reach areas first so you don't have to lean over wet paint or drag a hose through it. We hope you guys are okay best regards from Clearwater Florida!

I hope y'all are ok. Now a pro-tip. If you ever paint another hood. If you drill a small hole in the hood hinge and the hood. When you go to reinstall the hood. Just put your drill bit back in the two holes, install your hood bolts. It should be aligned as it was before you removed it. Excellent job on the paint and body work.

Better option than paint, cheaper too, I bet you could wrap that whole truck for less that $500 and you don't have to sand all the paint off except for that dent. So hardly any dust, it is not an all or nothing. You do a section today, a section in 2 days and a section next week. When done it would look great. I did not Yukon XL and is 20 years old but looks like I drove off the showroom.

been there done that. My family used to own a business customizing cars. Honestly, after we sold the business that was why a family friend wanted to hire me to join his drywall/plastering business because I was good at autobody work and he figured that the skills would largly translate (bondo, fiberglass and body filler application and sanding) and thus began my many years in drywall/plastering

You guys have ruined the genius that was that truck. If it runs great and has some cosmetic blemishes you got the best of both worlds. You don't have to worry about it breaking down and you don't have to worry about a shopping cart hitting it. Me personally I love a pickup truck it is mechanically sound but has a few scratches and dents. It's peace of mind. It's like that old song lyric, if you want to be happy the rest of your life make a fat girl your wife. Speaking of fat girls, is Ray by any chance related to Popcorn? There's a strong resemblance.I don't know how that's a segue but, I assume all you guys are related to Popcorn over there.
