I'm so mad that this didn't make the cut. It really would have helped to get the audience in Charlie's head a bit more, especially if you didn't read the book. The scene was shot perfectly with the transition from flashback to present time, and gives a better understanding to why Charlie is so isolated.
@adrianhansen24879 жыл бұрын
When movies have deleted scenes, it was deleted not because it wasn't perfect, but made for marketing strategies. Money from theaters and money from CDs. We see movies as an art - a life, but many producers see movies as profit.

This scene is too good to be deleted. You can see the strong connection between Charlie and his best friend. Losing a friend who's close to you isn't easy, especially for Charlie.
@hiimsky43816 жыл бұрын
As someone whose been struggling with depression, these deleted scenes were crucial for understanding Charlie’s character change and overall story. They tip toe the line on Michael and aunt helens abuse and it just makes it confusing. The first time I watched this movie I didn’t know aunt Helen sexually abused Charlie because as soon as my mother figured it out she turned off the film. I think she was worried charlie was going to hurt himself and didn’t want me to see that, as I was younger when we watched it. I was so angry at her but when I finally got to watch the end later I realized she was probably right to do that. And even if these scenes mean my mother would’ve turned off the film even earlier they were important to the story. And watching the movie later I would have really connected with them. It’s kind of funny that she tried to hide Charlie’s depression and abuse from me when years later I was the one suffering from depression. I relate to charlie and maybe it would send other people off the deep end but for me it was nice to relate to someone else, even if charlie is only fictional.

this scene is near perfect, and the chemistry between them is heartbreaking and inspirational (spell?), but watching the movie many times, I do feel that it works best the way they built it in the final cut. This scene is out of context, but even like this it feels like a completely different movie. I'm not saying it for good or for bad, to be clear I love this scene. One more thing; I think the music in this film is such a key element it becomes a character of its own at some point. It not only sets the tone of the entire film, but passes the scene on to the other with gentle, smooth hands and making sure it lands safely. If you look at the entire soundtrack as a whole, you can actually see the waves that form when one song takes the place of the other and tells a completely different story than the one you've heard just ten seconds ago. It's a beautiful dance, and matching another song rather then "asleep" to the oh-so-beautiful shot of Charlie lying in bed would be taking the wrong step in the dance. So I'm glad I saw it and I understand why they would cut it out. Beautiful music, beautiful acting of Logan, beautiful beautiful beautiful boy.

I'm going to go the road less traveled and say I like that this scene didn't make the final cut. It's nice to me that Michael remains mostly an enigma and a bit of an afterthought. Including this scene would have forced them to shed a lot more light on his character, making for another storyline to follow. With that one added as a main storyline there would have been too much for a less than two hour long pg-13 rated movie. If they were willing to go into what is now familiar territory and go above the two hour mark then yes add the Michael story arc.
@dayangmarikit6860 Жыл бұрын
IDK... his brother and aunt also has little screen time, but they didn't go into much detail about those characters. I personally think that it would have been nice to see Michael.
@vicksvapor7711 жыл бұрын
Stephen explains that he cut this because in books, you can have two ghosts. In movies, you can only have one. In another interview, he mentions a film friend (since this was his first picture) told him that. Ultimately, he felt like the story of the past belonged to Aunt Helen. He also felt like the flashbacks with Candace as a kid lent to the emerging theme of sexuality that comes at the end but also felt those were mixing the message of the past so he only kept the ones involving Aunt Helen.

The movie was such a big disappointment since they cut so much especially about Michael and aunt Helen to I mean the scenes weren't described as I expected them to. I bet people who haven't read the book wouldn't understand Charlie than the people who have read the book
@twilightfades_79 жыл бұрын
Oh get over it. Why does everyone always say this? Movies are only so long. That's what the damn book is for. Use your imagination. If you had wanted all the scenes that were in the book to be in this film then it would've been as long as the Titanic. We all know Stephen Chbosky directed this movie and I think he did a really incredible job with this. So accept it and move on. No matter the occasion, everyone always finds a reason to complain and be dissatified.
@takamori119 жыл бұрын
Jennifer Moran I dont think this is a fair argument; certainly portions of a book must be removed in order to fit a movie length but serious portions that made Charlie who he was in the book were removed, making him basically a different person. If anything the movie fits into this strange sort of fan fiction that removes most of the depth of charlie and instead tells a story fitting into the 'wild high school' experience. I agree that too many liberties were taken in order to turn the film into a movie and it could have been done differently to stay closer to the vision the book offered.
@rokfish72429 жыл бұрын
Erica I saw the movie first and loved it personally. Though they definitely should have kept this scene. The movie's not that long any way and it fits in, plus (I watched it recently) they have a wierd hesitated shot on Michael's GF when Charlie starts highschool, only seeing this scene now do I see why that would have made more sense.
@MimisSoulandMind9 жыл бұрын
+Erica that's true! i just saw the movie today for the first time, and i didn't get alot of things. Like, who the friend was who killed himself (seeing this deleted scene, i get it), if Aunt Hellen sexually abused him or not, and who he is writing the letters to.. But after seeing this deleted scene i think he wrote the letters to Micheal. It's a great movie, but some things just don't make alot of sense if you haven't read the book i guess.
@MichaelJordan-sv6xz9 жыл бұрын
+Yasmina B I'm pretty sure he's writing the letters to the reader of the book. I guess they just kept that for the movie because it would help tell Charlie's thoughts, even though it doesn't work just as well in the movie as in the book

When this movie came out on DVD it was around the 1 year anniversary of someone very close to my best friend committing suicide. We watched the deleted scenes together. I turned around when I heard him crying. It reminded him too much of his friend. Thankfully this book and film taught us a lot about friendship, life, and not watching someone hurt when they need a friend. It helped bring us a lot closer together. This scene will always be the epitome of the movie for me, even though it was cut.
