This is my personal scoring of this deleted scene from the 2012 movie PERKS OF BEING A WALLFLOWER. I do not own this video, but I do own the music that is scored underneath.
This is my first assignment for Hans Zimmer's Master Class - Question and Answer in a theme.
I wrote this short piece to illustrate the tension and underlying sadness that Charlie feels from his past. In this scene, Charlie reads a poem that some would assume his friend, Michael, wrote to Charlie before he committed suicide. This poem, seems to be a metaphor, a cry for help, to Charlie. This significantly scared Charlie since Michael was his only friend and now that Charlie has a sense of belonging, he shares his journey through the trama. This also reflect Charlie's inner conflict - without any spoilers - he definitely seems to be in a repressive state of existence, stuffing away the pain of the facade of his perfect upbringing that is now seen in his matured life.
Check out the song alone on my soundcloud:

What weirds me out is that if you watch all the deleted scenes, which is like 35 minutes in total, you basically get the same idea of the movie just with more stuff about Michael, his sister and mother. They should have kept it in and make a long ass movie.

They deleted a bunch of scenes so the movie wouldn't be rated R and teenagers could watch it
@timothytai691
@timothytai691 3 жыл бұрын
@@silviavidal3644 that's such a stupid thing; the movie is meant to be for teenagers and deals with all the issues like drugs, love and depression that they deal with, too. Edit: I'm not trying to insult you, please don't take it the wrong way.

@@timothytai691 i understand what you’re saying but silvia vidal is right. I watched the deleted scenes and read the book and i thought of the same thing but later i found out it had to be left out to get rated a R so yeah it’s really unfortunate but it’s how it is
@timothytai691

@@afilmbymirthe no I get what silva is saying. I was just expressing my frustration with the incompetency of the rating system that fails to recognize The Perks of Being a Wallflower as an attempt to show these issues that inevitably reach teens anyways, whether it be by movie or through real life. It'd have been much better that things are portrayed onscreen with sufficient film language (music, cinematography etc.) to show teens what to feel towards certain topics, or even to just show them these topics and educate them. I use "them" as if I'm not just another kid lol

This is the only movie I know where ALL the deleted scenes were absolutely crucial to the movie! I would LOVE for them to do a director’s cut and add all the scenes back.

Only me who thinks this could’ve been Michaels suicide-note, I mean he gave it to Charlie before he passed and he (at least they think so) never left a note for his parents?

The part that takes me by storm when I listen to Sam recite this poem isn't the fact that he may or may not be calling out for help because deep down I believe he isn't. The part that yanks my breath away is how he read this not because of a simple reason like emotional trauma or to ruin their nights or even because he didn't wanna provide a normal gift, but to merely show them a beautiful piece with so much meaning that it shocks his friends and leaves them in an echoing silence. Art is meant to test your comfort and make you squirm and by reading this poem his gift is held in that very moment like amber and he will hold on to that fact for the rest of his life.

i do agree with you but i think the intention of this scene is not to be listening to the words themselves but to see the scene for what it is, charlie reading something, that being the suicide note or his own poem but the group accepting and observing and really listening to Charlie

that's why on the back of a brown paper bag he tried another poem and he called it "Absolutely Nothing" because that's what it was really all about and he gave himself an A and a slash on each damned wrist and he hung it on the bathroom door because this time he didnt think he could reach the kitchen----

If I had to guess, run time. Typically, cuts are made for run time, pacing and context. In this case, it may have just been for the run time.

some times they run a director's cut past a select critic audience and access their reaction and feed back...based on which scene are dropped / deleted ...also there is the question run time..

Not as far as they know. Charlie does mention Michael gave it to him but he doesn't know who wrote it. Maybe Michael wrote it and gave it to him already planning things, that was his way of writing a note but Charlie didn't catch that. We also know Michael used a gun... but that doesn't necessarily mean he didn't write it. Knowing Charlie he may not have put 2 and 2 together so thats why it was never explicitly said in the book or movie, maybe Michael didn't write it and it was just a poem Michael found gave to Charlie cause he liked it, maybe he gave it as a way of saying goodbye. We'll never really know cause we have everything from Charlie's perspective and so we can only guess based off what he says about Michael and the poem.

Ok i just did some more research and I've found out some new things: Stephen Chbosky didn't write it, he found it somewhere and wanted to include it in the book but since it was a very unknown poem he had trouble finding the author. Ive done some research myself 2 versions exist, with different names and slightly different content. The first written by Dr. Earl Reum, he worked in education and one of his students apparently took his life and that inspired the poem that is named A person/ A paper/ A promise. The second written by a 14 year old boy called Patrick Comeaux, he basically rewrote it from memory but not correctly. i have found links saying that a 15 year old boy wrote the poem naming it To Santa and little sisters and is supposedly 2 years before he commited suicide, whether that kid is Patrick, who Chbosky mentions, i don't know. This website kind if summarises everything prezi.com/jeo820iclvor/absolutely-nothing/ the boy basically incorrectly rewrote the poem by Dr. Reum and that is the version in the book, which is mentionned in acknowledgement at the beginning of the book, or at least my version Basically Michael indeed did not write it but as i mentioned it may have been a sort of warning/cry for help/ using someone else's words as a note to say goodbye

Leah, I remember that Charlie reads a poem that someone says must have been a boy suicide note, but there’s no direct link from that poem to Michael.
