Daily HiFi snippet from a couple weeks ago answering a similar question in a similar way: • Perlisten Or JTR? Mich...
Find the track: Bjork Hollow (16-bit remix). For the demo track we talked about that Michael and Tim heard at Perlisten's HQ!
Even though they compete in the same price or similar price brackets is the comparison between these brands fair? Are these in the same fruit group or is one a banana and one an apple? Further more as an owner of one of these speaker brands, could Michael fairly pick the other one that he doesn't own as better or worse?

Youthman, if you’re going to keep the videos going on about home theater speakers and gear, can’t avoid answering questions about comparing speaker brands or gear. That’s also what your viewers want to know as well.

Agreed... Youthman has mastered the art of walking the tight rope especially when there are sponsorships involved... I do understand it could impact his future youthman deals and and even his bread and butter... :-) Well this is the same thing with everything now a days... independent reviews from creators are a thing of the past as everyone at some point in time has to feed their family.

Great video and I agree with the points made. I’m not sure why Channa was compelled to open a cable during the video as it had no bearing on the topic. If anything it was distracting and disruptive to the video. Maybe that was the point?

The key is understanding value for money. We all know there are diminishing returns when paying more for home audio, but some people are willing to pay it if they can justify. Why would anyone buy Perlisten if you can’t give any reason to spend the extra money over JTR (besides the looks)? Doesn’t even have to be “better” but at least needs to be different in a meaningful way.

I wish with the Perlistens being two to three times as expensive we could get a JTR setup in the room alongside the Perlistens and have a straight up comparison. I mean with JTRs being $18000 after their 10% discount for 3 212HTRs, 2 110ht’s and 2 Captivator 2400’s subs you have a bed layer home theater. The Perlistens you get two towers for $18000. So there is a huge price difference if you want the five bed layer speakers with perlisten your talking $48000 once you add 2 of their $9000 subs. Even if they were in the same room and it was close or one or the other was a little better come on man no hurt feelings. I know there is probably sponsorship or friends in the middle but with how far apart in price they are I would think the owners would understand. I wish everyone would get together and give it a go considering these speakers aren’t in the same realm. Most people can’t afford either of these speakers and even less can afford the Perlistens. They are both awesome speakers I’m sure. Oh ya and I’m waiting on my 5 bed layers and 2 Captivators as we speak…🤣

Perlisten for that beauty, JTR for SQ, Danley Sound Labs SM-series for ultimate SQ, SPL, price, and form factor. For DSL, you just have to order them with a veneer to get that pertiness level to 11. They will custom finish or veneer most of their products for home use. DSL offers speakers who's phase is just one full 360 degree turn throughout it's entire frequency range (something Dirac usually tries to do but these come from the factory like this), +/- 3db from the factory (can easily be flattened to +/- 1db with DSP because of their superior directivity index), have controlled polars far lower in FQ than most any speaker in the world (this helps lower interaction with the room), and has super super low distortion. Also, the drivers in the horn all combine before they come out of its mouth so, there is no minimum listening distance. Lastly, because of the designs I just spoke of, their off-axis response is identical to the on-axis response but just lowers in SPL. Very similar to coaxial compression drivers mounted in CD horns, like JTR's Noesis line. I sound like a shill. haha! But DSL can do all of this and then also bring it in (in their SM-series) at a price point that beats JTR and Perlisten. They're a real sleeper kind of deal in the home theater market.

@@healthynutster Agreed when I did audio reviews for AVS forms I did not have a problem with giving people bad news as far as systems were concerned because no 2 are the same and regardless whether they change and people's rooms or how their ears here things most people on KZbin do not want to give people bad news because that means that they will not Be able to review those speakers again or that company if you say something negative.. I never had a problem with that I used to call it like how I saw it It's just the way it was and there was plenty of times where I didn't get all the reviews from manufacturers because of it I didn't care I was being honest

They were both completely different systems. The JTR system was setup with audio being #1 priority while the perlisten system had the the speakers behind the screen. So it would be unfair to make that comparison.

For price, I will go with JTR. My main gripe with JTR, is that they are straight-up ugly. They look more like something that I would use in the trunk of my car,as to where the Perlisten towers, are beautiful to look at.

I love that JTR went for sound first, and looks be damned. If there is a cost savings, I would always go with sound. *However let it be known my speakers are behind an acoustic screen. I am 2-3 weeks from a full JTR system at the house.

To me, many (most?) speakers will sound good to great when you feed them some juice, few sound good at lower listening levels. Looking at the JTR 210HT, with 2x 10" drivers, the FR is 60hz-20khz? While I'm fully accepting of book shelf/stand mounts limiting FR with the intent/design of adding a sub, that's a large speaker for such a limited FR.
@fishis14
@fishis14 9 ай бұрын
Pro audio 18in subwoofers barely go below 30hrz. The large drivers are designed for power handling, loudness and efficiency. Not for low frequency response. That's why jtr also sells massive subwoofers to pair with the smaller towers.

The JTR and Perlisten are very different designs. They will sound different certainly due to the different types of transducers. But they are very different with regards to performance characteristics in different size rooms. The Perlisten benefits significantly from designing to achieve several performance characteristics required by THX. Notice in the performance data on the Perlisten site that the horizontal dispersion is considerably wider over a wider frequency spectrum than the JTR. The Perlisten vertical dispersion is also much narrower. This is the classic design approach to (Home) THX LCR speakers. Perhaps not quite as narrow vertically as the original THX Ultra LCR dispersion spec (pre-2002 or so), but also not quite the more loose vertical dispersion of the subsequent THX Ultra2 LCR dispersion spec. This “elliptical” shaped listening window was designed to do several things: enable the speaker to cover a listening area rather than just an MLP; maintain a directivity index of about 8, yet not sacrifice coverage of the area; minimize floor/ceiling/coffee table reflections; increase acoustic critical distance of the LCR, enabling it to serve larger rooms better. Further, THX requires that there be no audible lobing in that horizontal coverage. The JTR may well achieve the same, but will do so best in larger rooms with longer throws. Horizontal dispersion coverage could be challenged in shorter throw rooms. There might also be concern of higher potential for ceiling/floor bounces due to the wider vertical dispersion. The Perlistens dispersion characteristics enable it to be at home in a wide range of room sizes/throw distances. In summary, much of the Perlisten performance is due to a design that achieves beneficial THX performance objectives. This is also true of the smaller and less expensive Perlisten models. Want to save some money? Install a smaller Perlisten such as the R5t in a very sturdy baffle wall in acoustic suspension configuration, and EQ to account for the baffle boundary gain. You will have extremely strong performance/headroom considerably below 80Hz where your subs can take over. It’s likely that the Perlisten will subjectively sound more “refined” due to its type of transducers. My $.02 worth. Cheers.

I have a feeling JTR could get the full thx rating on their speakers, if they bothered to pay for the thx rating.
@canweshoot
@canweshoot 9 ай бұрын
@@fishis14 It would likely mostly depend on the dispersion factors I describe above. If the JTR achieves them and all the other requirements, then yes it would.

Very expensive. I don't see how they justify the value of the $ in the new speakers today. A few years back $6K you get a good sounding floor speakers. But $30K+ I don't see the justification worth the valuation in them to charge that much for a speaker system. Back in 1997 I purchased VAF flagship Signature I-93MKIII with DSP they was 6K. Back then not many speakers could match them. And today still not much could still match them. I just don't see the value to charge $30K for a pair of speakers. Hifi become too expensive for the average income earner. It just don't sound right when people say they have a pair of speakers that cost more or as much as their car.

Both really good speakers, but this is not really an argument. The Perlistens are better, but they're also much more expensive, and those Perlistens subs are perhaps the best powered subs on the market, period.

Easy easy answer. Cost vs performance not even close perlisten! Nice speakers but theres tons of nice speakers out there that are just too damn expensive. Jtr are also expensive but you can see where the money went mostly.

Joe N Tell, so sorry you had to go through all of this! I unfortunately haven't heard both brands and so I cannot make a comment there, however I am perfectly capable (to your point) of comparing two different speakers in two different rooms separately by several days. Sure I could do an even better job if on the same day / within the same few minutes, and even better IF I'm able to hear each in the very same room (at an Audio show you cannot 😉), however I can certainly do a dang good job despite Days/Rooms. No doubt the Youthman cannot, but then he doesn't possess as much experience at this as I do, and frankly the Youthman (Yes this may sound a bit harsh I apologize) doesn't poses as good an Ear as I have (and the Youthman never declared that he does, so nothing at all against Mr. Youthman... Well, except his utter disrespect for you during this video where he continually talk OVER you. That I'm afraid was shameful to say the least). I was seriously considering Perlisten until I got a taste of Open Baffle (New York Audio show - Spatial X4) and I'm afraid as good as the Perlisten's are (as in really REALLY good!) once you 'un-hear the Box' you may never want to go back. That and the fact that the X4's are a very well designed speaker in general, but yeah until you hear Open Baffle done right / done this well, you may be missing out (IMO).

If I'm spending that much 💰 on speakers they're going into a theater room that cost more to build than the speakers. That and the speakers will be hidden behind the screen and fabric waslls with appropriate acoustic treatment. So I don't care what they look like. I think the Perlisten speakers are ugly.
