I’ve got a new garden in Nova Scotia zone 6. I’m in a forest clearing. Not alot of flat land, boulders and rocks all over and thin soil. I had to terrace and trucked in 5 dump trucks of soil. I’ve topped with bunny poop and cardboard and seaweed. The layout is a problem. There’s no real way to garden in rows. Ive planted some dwarf trees and berries. Just don’t know how to work annuals in. Clumps?

Annuals don't need to be in rows, although I still do it, just more short ones. Like six or seven, three foot rows instead of one twenty foot row

Hi John, yes, you can definitely do things in clumps, circular or keyhole beds, anything really. I typically do recommend that your annual gardens are separate or in a different area than your perennials since each requires something different i.e. with annuals you're tilling the soil, it's more bacterially dominated whereas with perennials you want a more fungally dominated soil and don't want to disturb the roots. So if there is a way to have your food forest areas on your terraces, while at the same time carving out an annual area, that would probably be my recommendation.
