I have a small wood chipper and have been grinding up dead brush and mixing cow patties to start a composting pile. I'm excited.

Sounds like a good step in the right direction. I plan on making a composting pit it will be easier to keep it moist.

This is the best channel hands down for desert off-grid sustainability! You should be getting millions of views! I lived in southern Arizona for many years before “sustainability” was ever a thing, I had your idea many years ago before it was a cool thing to buy barren desert wasteland where it costs a fortune to drill wells and make it into a homestead. I love the desert, but that was something the wife wasn’t going to sign up for. You’re living my dream! Thanks! Keep up the great work!

I bought the first 40 acer section in the mid 90's but didn't have the money to develop it. My wife said she didn't want to raise the kids out there but was willing to retire there so that's the plan.

Thank you for sharing. Yes, permaculture can be done in West Texas. We homesteaders can also learn from Israel's techniques on how to grow things in the desert and how to fight desertification. My goal is to help my Texas semi-desert homestead bloom. GOD makes it possible. 🙏😇🧑‍🌾🌲🌳🌵🍀☘️🍃🌿🌱🏜️

Oh yes there is a bunch of people all around the world making their own little paradise. India, Africa, China, Middle East, Australia and the list goes on. I have big plans for my little Ranch it will take a while but I'm okay with that. I see little improvements every time I come to the ranch.

Sir, is it possible and legal to plant a native american bamboo in texas desert?
@TimelineRanch
@TimelineRanch Жыл бұрын
@mistersimple7303 Good question I am not aware of any restrictions against planting native species including bamboo in the desert. Bamboo does tend to grow better in areas that have primary wet weather in comparison to the desert climate though.

@@TimelineRanch ah I see. Thanks for the answer, Sir. I just have several questions about a desert since I am living in tropical area. Kinda unique and awesome to experiment planting bamboo in a desert if possible.

@mistersimple7303 I did attempt to plant sugar cane but did not have any growth. I do not live at the ranch so anything I plant is on its own. I have had good luck with a few tree species so far. I will try planting all different types of plants to see what will grow at the ranch a little at a time.

Awesome 👍 you've got the right ideas! Shaun Overton needs to talk to you. Catch all the water in deep ponds. Create a big dam at the bottom of your property where all the water funnels into.
@TimelineRanch

You know I messaged him when he first started his channel trying to help the Guy out but seems like he has his own ideas he wants to try. The fast way to achieve water security out here is a large catchment pond at the low end of your property right before it goes out. I've been working on my little ranch for almost ten years now it's come a long way in the 30 weeks I have been able to work out here. I still have 14 more years till retirement so it should be looking very good by then. Thanks for watching plenty to come on future projects out at the ranch.

Your method is going to work. It’s going to take a long time to see changes. If the pond was mine I would build a swale on the back side that gets overflow from the creek bed side break. You have that truck and nice trailer…every trip out you should get local coffee shop grinds and any vegetable scraps busted terra cotta pots and some wood for charcoal placing all that material in that imaginary swale behind the pond. It would accelerate your permaculture and make terra preta also get a tub of plain yogurt and dump it with your first scraps. Your living my dream man! I wish you the very best progress and the years to enjoy it!

I am interested in seeing if I'm able to start a self-healing cycle were the pond provides the moisture and nature runs its course. I think the magic will happen in due time. I have quite a few ideas I'll be testing over time looking forward to seeing the results. I'm mainly focusing on water security now because that is the most important I have about 14 years until retirement when I will permanently live at the ranch.
@HitTheDirt
@HitTheDirt Жыл бұрын
@@TimelineRanch that is plenty of time. Moisture will definitely help it along. Microorganisms and fungi will jump start the healing around the pond . That’s the only reason for the suggestion. Hope to see it flourishing.

Thanks for subscribing, I sold my property I had in Hemphill about three years ago. I like it out there but they were killing me with the property taxes on five acres. The 120 acres I have in west Texas costs the same in property tax now as they were charging me for five.

Have you figured out any ways to mitigate evaporation? That’s probably nearly impossible, correct? Just dig your ponds deep to minimize the pond surface area exposed to the atmosphere, where all the evaporation occurs. I haven’t seen all your videos yet. If you don’t have one already, might want to consider creating underground cistern for good drinking water in addition to your well with the rainwater coming directly off your roof. I’ve seen them build cisterns directly under the house.
@TimelineRanch
@TimelineRanch Жыл бұрын
I made a video on those plans exactly, I will build a 30,000 gallon concrete tank by the building. Will have the choice to fill it from the well water and roof water catchment.
@TimelineRanch
@TimelineRanch Жыл бұрын
As far as evaporation yes the best choice is to just dig the pond deep, I plan on digging down to 25' that should last for two years with no rain.

Hi I was wondering where you came across the historical information on rain by El Paso area. The best information as far as accuracy is the Jornada research I was able to find, starts mid 1930s to present. If there was no rain for 7 to 8 years everything out here would have died even the strongest of the plants. I'm not saying it didn't happen just hard to believe without seeing the documentation.Thanks for your time in advance.

Thanks for the compliment and watching. More than likely, it will be next monsoon season, June to September, before they get a good test. Most of the little bit of rain that falls during the off-season is very light, and no water runoff happens.
@bertclements
@bertclements Жыл бұрын
As you know, when the monsoon rains come in the summer, you have millions of gallons of water, more than enough water to last you the entire year. (If you can figure out a way to capture it.) I thought about many ways to capture monsoon rainwater, and the best most cost effective way I figured was to do exactly what you are doing with several deep ponds. As you said, you need an effective way to drain each pond every few years to clear out all the silt that they will inevitably collect. (Great for the garden.) Perhaps pump or siphon water into the other ponds you have?
@TimelineRanch
@TimelineRanch Жыл бұрын
That's what I'm thinking just pump the water to another pond clean out that one and repeat. Like you said great soil for the garden.
