This half hour video documents the ongoing work of Permaculture Gurus, Geoff and Nadia Lawton, in the Dead Sea Valley. It begins with the famous original 'Greening the Desert' five minute video clip, and then continues into Part II, a 2009 update to the 2001 original.
You'll get to see and learn about the original Greening the Desert site and see some of the spin-off effects of its influence throughout Jordan.
When there’s no soil, no water, no shade, and where the sun beats down on you to the tune of over 50°C (122°F), the word ‘poverty’ begins to take on a whole new meaning. It is distinct and surreal. It’s a land of dust, flies, intense heat and almost complete dependency on supply lines outside of ones control. This is the remains of what was once called the ‘fertile crescent’. It is the result of thousands of years of abuse. It is a glimpse at a world where the environment - whose services provide for all human need - has all but completely abandoned us. This is a glimpse at the world our consumer society is inexorably moving towards, as our exponential-growth culture gorges itself at ever-increasing rates.
The original Greening the Desert video clip has been watched hundreds of thousands of times and has been posted to countless blogs and web pages in the datasphere. Although only five minutes long, it has inspired people around the globe, daring the lucid ones amongst us, those who can see the writing on the wall, to begin to hope and believe in an abundant future - a future where our survival doesn’t have to be based on undermining and depleting the very resources of soil, water, phosphorus, etc. that we depend on. The work profiled in that clip demonstrates that humanity can be a positive element within the biosphere. Man doesn’t have to destroy. Man can repair.

Clouwds Just keep watching KZbin videos on the subject. The you tube algorithm will recommend new videos for you as it does for everyone. Watch videos from Elaine Ingham in the U.S. They are long and require your complete attention, but the information will amaze you. Watch Greg Judy’s videos on how he finds and restores depleted pastures. He takes depleted pastures with no economic value to anyone, and runs cattle, sheep, goats and chickens across the land. He then leases or sells the rich pasture land he has created to others. My local plant nursery (Dave Wilson Nursery) has videos for beginners. I’ll bet your local nurseries have videos too. Good Luck

I have to say, I remember this program you had crops growing and being shared amongst the families. You had local support of villages so what happened was it because funding was pulled and the local people just went back to sitting on their tush. You would think that these local people would have kept it going so they would have food for their families and keep implementing the things taught to them, they could have sold vegetables to earn cash, they could have sold young starts to other villages. I can positively said if I was shown away of feeding my kids I would not have stopped, I would do all possible to feed, keep clean and educate my children....

I'm glad he's incorporating some livestock into his greening project. When done correctly I believe livestock can greatly help the Land. I've watched video's of farmers that have took damaged Pasture and improved it with what some call mob grazing. They said after it was intensely grazed for a day,and in the process the livestock fertilized the ground,they let it rest for 90 days before it's grazed again. And they say when they do that each trip back the land is improved and produces even more grass. I also watched a video of a guy in Arizona who planted some grass,with some compost. He then put chickens in a mobile chicken coop on it after the grass started coming up. I guess he moved it daily. He showed the difference between the land the chickens had been on vs what the chickens haven't yet been on. Interesting I thought. I guess it was his small piece of land that he was trying to green up and make a homestead out of. Look up Allen Savory as well. I also watched a video of a guy who grew livestock,fruit and I can't remember what else on the same farm. He seemed to think it worked well together.

Utterly baffling that those who were originally benefiting from the project as originally designed, seemed to have completely failed to carry it forward, again, to to their own detriment rather than benefit. Also it seems untterly daft to go to the trouble of rearranging the drip irrigation system to be diametrically opposed to the original position....😂😂😂 I'm NOT well versed in permaculture but as a keen gardener and triffidologist, i.e. there's always room for just (one more) plant, honest!;- but even I can see the relevance of the original design & management techniques & would want to carry it forward in that environment.

What a wonderful project and program. Personally, what I would do is build open-air distillation and distill as much of that brackish water as possible. Basically, you'd pump that brackish water to a lined pit (call it 6 inches deep) and a few acres in width and length, and then use corrugated, fiberglass greenhouse roofing material setup like an inverted 15-degree pitch roof, slightly tilted, to collect distilled water and pump it into the rainwater storage systems. With evaporation, you'll also get a lot of ambient cooling of the surrounding air. Placed properly, this air could be used to lower the overall ambient air temperature and allow the ecosystem to produce a higher variety of crops. The air-temperature delta could also be used to power Sterling Motors/Engines that can produce power to run pumps or whatever else is necessary.

There are problems with HOA's in the US. Mine wouldn't allow water harvesting and were not keen on turning the backyard into food. These are things we need to fight for. I now harvest about 1500 gallons and my small backyard (1200 sq. ft.) produced over 300 lbs. of fruits and veges so far this year. Mother Earth allows me to make good changes. Government is the real pain in the neck.

I believe that the permaculture method of growing crops is great. I also think that growing desert grasses into 7’ x 7’ huge grids would help to compost desert sand with their extremely long roots. Crops would be protected growing within the individual cells. Desert grass is usually watered by the morning dew.

Permaculture and regenerative farming require much thought to tailor the plants for each space. Then if pests arrive, more thought is needed to deal with them. Actually many people need help to be successfull growers with these integrative practices. And bad routines such as burning must stop. In addition to stopping our routine of tilling. Even so, permaculture/regenerative farming are great improvements to farming and gardening.

I think crowdfunding that harnesses the conversion/ higher currency values of Western countries would be the way to go. They could do something like patreon where they video tape educational and behind the scenes videos and share it with the contributors :D I'd totally contribute for that but a system like that allows each person/ family/ institution/ community to contribute what's doable for them.

The desert countries need thousands of people Like Geoff and Nadia. If it is possible in Jordan it should be possible almost anywhere. 'Aid' from western countries often does more harm then good, when people send things like cloths to Africa it destroys the local manufacturing industry and then when people lose interest and stop sending cloths those places are left without any industry to pick up the slack. These countries don't need 'aid' they need people to actual help set up projects like this.

@ilovejesus5566
@ilovejesus5566 3 жыл бұрын
@@nerdy1701 that is party true, i grew up farming, we still farm and I know plenty of farmers, a lot of it is simply that at the end of the day you do have to make at least a bit of profit, no one can work for nothing :) often the profit margin in farming is small enough it makes it hard to have extra for experimenting with things like this, along your point of conventional farming having a higher profit margin, that is definitely true, it is more costly at least in the short term to produce food organically and sustainably and even though plenty of consumers want their food produced in that manner at the end of the day most will buy the cheapest food which only drives the conventional farming more and makes it even harder to farm other ways. Some of it is also a mind set, this is how things have been done for a long time and change is hard, especially if u might have crop failures during transition, most farmers cant afford that, that being said, we cant afford to deplete our soil either, so i totally agree that something should change. One thing that plenty of people seem not to be aware of is how good of an impact agricultural livestock can have on land if managed properly, we've plenty of fields and grass lands that have improved in the last 20 years due to grazing. Cows are big composters that can make a high quality food for people out of food that is not fit for human consumption.

Hi My name is Paula. And I need to say something. I believe the elderly should should and all other people from around the world should come together and try to get the goverment to work with them on this life and death of our planet we must not let this happen to our life sores. And the only thing that can make our planet well again is permaculture! we should get air buses and to get elderly people that are fit to do the work. Like what elderly person would not like to garden I would love to do this and after 3 to 6 mouth's you can take a whole set of new people where ever it is needed. we have all kinds of people around the world that need something to do and this over all keeps you moving it is healthy for them I am not saying all elderly and the people that cant find job;s can go to these places to work for the money they get from the goverment to stay at home tell they find a job so here you go why not?????. They can still get the money because when they get back from the the job of healing the planet they can still look for jobs and if no luck they can apply to do the job again and will be leaning to do permaculture witch is awesome if you have land or it can be a trade for a young person to do if they like it I just think this is a good way to heal the planet this is where all that money that is going out there should be put on this healing our planet we need this to be done and this is the way it should be done. And with the corona-19 there are jobs that no one wants to do because it is to close to the next person so how ever do not want to work this is what we should do is to send people away here there is room and air to breath and move around send them where you need them to go so they wont set on there asses taking money I would go we have to do something right so you kill a bird with one stone I do not mean the bird thing I love nature I know there well be kink's there always' is but we can do this we have to do this now not latter this is the way to pay some of this money back some how and the people need to move and help the planet so how can we do this??????? and how can I get there????? thank you how ever reads this Thank you for helping and caring about our world God Bless you all that care.

@@ismailniyaz5167 Ismail, I am greatly dismayed at the so prominent negative parts of my country. I believe we are all God's/Allah's children and the good and bad in each person is each person's choice and is neither automatic nor dependent on what nation or religion one comes from. I wish peace and God's/Allah's will in all the world and pray His greatest mercies upon all honest, sincere people who honestly, sincerely disagree on religion and other thought and beliefs. I *personally* love and pray for all people on earth, especially and including those who see and think of me as an enemy or less than your fully loving brother and friend. Peace to you, my brother!
